Hi Peter,
forget PCI! there was some buzz about ActionTech PCI modem which
is supposedly works with OS/2, DOS, etc., but the success stories
from Linux users are yet to show up...

Why the heck would you need a PCI modem? DCE is below 56Kbit per
second anyways, while faster DTE rate will not save time when you
download GZIPped packages or GIFted women (modem compression can
not help when the files are already properly compressed).

As far as V.90 ISA modems for Linux are concerned, look up the list
of vendors at
http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/CheapBox.html#modem

Expect to pay below $50.

Cheese,
Andrew

Hi mister,
Let us look at it this way: when you spend money (below $50) on a
_real_ modem, you eventually support decent manufacturers who do
not try to fool you with "windows only" crap.
The list of vendors who sell hardware-based V.90 modems is at

1) Correlation does not imply causation. The stork population is
   positively correlated with birth rate in certain northern European
   countries, but that doesn't mean that storks deliver babies. Similarly
   for Red Hat's popularity and "real dumb" questions.
2) The *NUMBER* of "real dumb" questions will necessarily rise with the
   NUMBER of postings, assuming an equal PROPORTION of "real dumb"
   questions to total postings over time. This has nothing to do with Red
   Hat per se.
3) Five years ago, the only people interested in Linux were hackers and
   other enthusiasts. In order for the Linux userbase to grow, it must
   necessarily grow into a population that's less computer literate than
   the original Linux population. Therefore, you'll see more and a
   higher percentage of basic questions as Linux grows in popularity. This
   has nothing to do with Red Hat per se.

IMHO, you're picking on Red Hat for no good reason.

We've just installed RH5.2 on an HP PC.

Everything works ok except eth0 which is a D-Link DE-530CT/T+. Linux
has chosen the tulip.o driver for this card and it seems to load
without error at startup.

However, I can't ping it and it seems to go "offline" after trying ie.
if I do an ifup eth0 it says that "resource is temporarily
unavailable".

Initially at least, an ifconfig shows the card is there.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks,

RedHat developed rpm and the whole installation for the distribution from
scratch, together with assorted administration tools (control-panel, glint,
among others) and they also host (and fund) the Gnome development. Besides,
the '-28' in their latest libc-5.3.12-28.i386.rpm for example means
essentially 28 patchsets (some local, others contributed) applied to the
base, pristine source. Plus checking out who knows how many more and testing
the whole stuff together as a distribution. They are also active in checking
security.

That is _not_ "just packing" in my book.

Date: Sat, 03 Apr 1999 22:22:03 +0000

I just got a Matrox Millinneum G200 video card and attempted to
install RedHat 5.2 which went fine until Xconfigurator returned an
error saying that it could not detect the video ram in my card.

So, I configured it by hand. But when I typed startx at the unix prompt,

the X server failed to start claiming that video card did not have
enough
ram to handle an 800x600 8bit configuration.

My video card has 8meg of ram.

My questions:

Has anyone else run into a similar problem?

If so, how did you fix/work-around it?

If anyone has successfully got RedHat Linux 5.2 to work with the
Matrox Millennium G200 video card could you send me the
config. file?

Thanks,

You can pass the argument through lilo by editing /etc/lilo.conf

========================

image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7
  label = linux20
  append = "mem=96M"
  root = /dev/hda3

after making the changes be sure to run lilo again.

Hi all,

I also have SP 128 PCI and I'm struggling to get it to work; all of
the success stories I've read here so far were from people running
RedHat. I'm using Slakware; has anyone managed to make it work under
it? Slakware comes without the support for ES1370/1371 chipset. I
tried to compile the modules myself using both 2.0.34/35 and 2.0.36

without particular luck so far.

Any help will be apreciated.

Frankly, I can't stand my opitcal mouse that came with my sparc. I hate it

 You don't need anything like this. In /etc/rc.d/rc.local
 give the irq and com no. for the modem, eg.

 setserial /dev/cua1 irq 3 spd_cust

I'll tell ya this much - the G460 is not going to do crap for ya in

However, your problem is the assignment of PCI IRQs in general. If the
3c905b card is a PCI card as well, you'll have to start experimentng to
get the motherboard's BIOS assigning it different IRQs. How to do it
depends from your BIOS implementation. Some boards allow defining the IRQs
manually, but most boards do not provide any means to do that directly.
If so, you'll have to start moving cards around and disable/reserve
IRQs in the BIOS (in the PNP/PCI section) .

If the 3c905 is an ISA card, use the DOS utility that came with the
card to get the NIC onto a different IRQ (don't forget to reserve
that IRQ for ISA cards in your BIOS) .
