yes, it is possible. is the netraid controlling the drive or disabled and
being used as the world's most expensive SCSI controller? it will work both
ways, if you want it to. just got through testing linux on a 3SI card, went
in beutifully and without a hitch. -- --- --- --- --- The spammers say

Couldn't tell you about the upper bound though. I have

Personally, I had no trouble. Then again, I don't have
any WinXX partitions to get the way. Although, as soon
as I find my BeOS CD, I can test how Linux and Be get
        along on a 20G disk.

I used DiskDruid to partition the disk btw.

If your BIOS is resetting itself, that alone is a dreadful problem
not likely related to what OS you're running.

Muck about in /var/log/messages and see if there's anything interesting
going on before/after the system reboots itself.

I have a hp-deskjet510 which run fine for years on all my computers.
Now I decided to put it to my old linux-server again with a gigabyte-
586sg-mainboard.

and now the following thing happens:

when plugging in the parallelport the busy-light of the printer turns on
immediately and I can do nothing (no reset, no testingpage, no changing
catridge and no printing of course). Ok maybe wrong port-mode or wrong
adress/IRQ.
So I enter the bios-setup and IMMEDIATELY AFTER ENTERING THE BIOS the
busy-light goes off and the printer goes to normal mode. when leaving the
bios again (independent of the port-settings I selected: I tried all
adresses/irqs and portmodes from abraham to zacharias) the printer
switch to its nasty busy-light-on-mode again !!

what the heck is going on here ?

when hanging a canon-bj200 to the same cable this one seem to have a
quite normal behavior.

This resembles a question/answer on another group and the question I put up.
One reply came direct from Redhat, so they know about the problem with pump
and dhcp. The posting is in the comp.os.linux.setup subject "RH 6.0/DHCP
Problem". Another suggestion is to enter IP addresses in manually.

Thank you Dark Jedi,

naturaly I don't want to use the NetRAID 3Si just as a SCSI-Controller. I want
to mirror the Systemdisk of a NetServer LPr and attach an external
RackStorage/8 System.
Do you have expierences with that kind of configuration under Linux ?

I used to have a 386 with 20 MB of RAM running Linux and acting as a file
server and webserver for about 5 computers. it was also IP masquerading.
I used it for about a year before upgrading to a Pentium. I see no reason
a 486/50 wouldn't work!

i tried every possible method i know, but failed to get sound. The first

2.2.7 and referred to the cmi8330 document included in it.

It seems to fail to detect only the sound portion, i mean, WSS, MPU_401,
joystick.. seem to be configured correctly but while booting, i get the
message "LD 3 ... failed.."(i don't remember that message right now) and
it suggests putting (VERIFYLD N) in "isapnp.conf" file.

as for irq for sound, ruuning in windows98, irq 5 is allocated for it,
and i did the same thing under linux. Why do I fail to get sound from my
CMI8330??? Somebody plz help me.

Subject: Re: Ensoniq Soundscape Sound Card HELP!
Date: 4 May 1999 02:34:37 GMT

Hi Jay,
I have a soundscape card working to some degree.
you need to load the soundscape microcode into the card
after power on, I do this by running ssinit from
   /etc/rc.local
You will need the microcode file that came with the
windows drivers for the card. (they're also on the ensoniq website.)
there are several for different variants of the card.
   I'm using whateverthenameis.co1 (sndscape.co1???)
                               ^^^^

It is a while since I did this but ssinit is in the "snd-kit" tarball.

I compiled the sound driver directly into the kernel not as a module,
most of the sndconfig options are fairly obvious,

All this works fine with 1 card in the machine.
I have two midi cards in the machine.

     1) Ensoniq soundscape
     2) Roland MPU-401 ()

I can play midi files on both the ESS & MPU401 using playmidi

but haven't been able to get the ESS to play midi from a controller
keyboard sending midi via the midi IN port just yet.
   (works under win3.1 though :( ... )

I do have trouble initialising the ESS card with both cards in the machine.
I have the ESS set on DMA 1, I'm pretty sure it uses DMA 0 for loading
the microcode, I noticed that the MPU-401 devise is using DMA 0, this
   could explain this problem .

   Both cards work if
I cold boot to windows (this loads the microcode)
     Warm boot back to linux
An error message does appear during card initialisation but
because the microcode is already loaded into the card it
        doesn't matter.
Cheers,
   Steve
