Subject: Help!! re 2 CD-ROM ATAPI devices on IDE controller causing conflict?
Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 00:54:40 +0100

I am using Caldera Open Linux 1.3 and got all my devices operating, however
I recently added a 2nd CDROM device to the 2 IDE controller. The device is a
HP8100 ATAPI CD-ROM RW device , it shares a the IDE controller with a
Creative Labs CDROM ATAPI 2423 device.
As I am new to Linux and not very familiar with adding a device module to
the kernal I decided the easiest thing to do was to re-install Linux. During
re-installation it successfully identified both drives sharing the IDE
controller.

I get maybe hardware conlicts causing system slowdown and error messages
such as "hdd: irq timeout status=0x50" when I sometimes try to access the
CDROM drive. I have search all the HOWTOS for a clue to my problem without
success.

I originally installed the HP8100 under Windoze 98 without any problems or
conflicts. Is there any Linux utility to probe the and resolve a some form
of drive conflict? Or suggestions on specifying particular kernal parameters
to resolve the problem. There seems to be very little information on adding
such devices in Linux. Is it OK to have 2 ATAPI devices on the same IDE
controller?

I would appreciate if someone could give advice on this issue.

No matter what I do. I am going to try messing wtih the bios a bit, but
I don't think that will work. The problem is, when I even try to write
directly to the lp0, lp1, par0, par1, etc. devices, with, say 'echo
"fnord" > /dev/blah, if comes back with "Operation not supported by this
device". Also, autoprobing from RH printtool does not work. Yes, I am
sure I have it hooked up. Also, as an important note, I am using kernel
2.2.5. Is there a newer, stable, final relese? Should I go back to say,
2.2.4, or 2.2.2, or even 2.2.0? I think not 2.2.0. Anyway, please let me
know if you can help.

I know this might have been done when you upgraded but sometimes the hard
problems have simple solutions. Have you upgraded the BIOS?

When I first installed RH Linux 5.2 on a P55 200 mmx, it wouldn't boot after the
install. Kept hanging. Tried a Cyrix P200 + and it worked. Then I happened to
run across the web site of my MB manufacture (It's obscure and found it strictly
by chance) Found a BIOS upgrade and it allowed the Intel CPU to run it.

Strange thing was that Everything seemed to work during install and the initial
bootup correctly identified CPU.

Have you tried the follwing?

First, with lan-card utility, disable pnp mod.

Second, change proper irq setting.
Some irq may be not avaiable, you must try to find. I am using irq 9.

Third, if your card is combo type, specify the conection type you are using.

Problem is beyound these, I am sorry for nothing to tell you.

G'day,

I have a canon "lbp-8 mark III T" laser printer that I am trying to get to

just prints crap to the printer. The lbp8 driver is for the lbp8-II series

Does anyone know where I can get a driver for it that I can build into
ghostscript or a compatible driver that I can use, or any way at all that
I can get it to print postscript??? (plain text is no problem!)

Thanks,
Shane.

I have the same combination. The 3com is connected to a cable modem. At
installation (expert) I pick 3com 905x (boomerang) card. When configuring LAN
I choose dhcp. When asked to choose active services at bootup I check dhcp
(not checked by default). Then after Linux boots my cable modem is online, no
additional configuration is needed.

I installed RH 5.2 on a 410 a while ago. The video card was not supported out of
the box, but is probably supported out of the box on 6.0. Other than that I had
no problems. I have heard of people having problems with the integrated NIC on a
DELL GX1 (PII 350). Watch out for the SCSI Drivers too as they may be a little
picky (no experience with this under RH though sorry). I had to install the
specific manufacturer drivers for the 7880 UW for NT to install..
Like I said this is on a 410. I am not sure of the hardware differences under
the 610

Yeah, and it's easier to download when a few hundred thousand machines

Subject: Winmodem Rip Off Baskets
Date: Tue, 04 May 1999 10:13:52 GMT

Hi!

Originally for uk.legal, but I thought it might interest you...

Get a load of this for the ultimate in a Microsoft dominated world :

I bought a Pace 56k Internal modem from a local computer store for 59.99. It
was an ISA modem and works perfectly with Windows, Linux and anything else you
care to throw at it. Having recommended this modem to a friend, I went in and
purchased what I thought was the same one for him, again for 59.99. Only this
time, it turns out it was a PCI controllerless modem (i.e. you need to be
running Windows in order for it to work (winmodem)). This particular flavour
of consumer rip off do not operate under Linux or anything else other than
Windows (and maybe Macs). They are a rip off because they are inefficient,
they lack certain hardware that makes the modem completely independent of the
OS used, and they depend wholly on the performance of the host machine which
dictates their own performance. You'll know if you have one by looking under
System/Hardware. If you find an HCFENUMERATOR device or equivalent (most seem
to be tied to IRQ 9), then you are the hapless victim also.

Anyway, I called them up and explained the situation, and they said there
would be a 20% restocking charge. Perturbed by this news, I rang trading
standards who say that because there was no breach of contract on their part
they can do this. I did not specify which OS the modem was to operate under
at the time of purchase. Are they not under any obligation to show on the
advertisement that there are specific software requirements for the hardware
(i.e. Windows) or am I stuffed? Certainly, if I'm stuffed, then there should
be some sort of legislation to prevent this nonsense happening to your
average computer joe. It's happened to me, and I know what I'm doing which is
why I feel particularly stupid for just assuming it would be the same
hardware.

One last piece of info, the amount shown on the receipt as being charged is
60.00. The modem is advertised at 59.99. As a last resort, can I use this
overcharging as the basis of a refund?

Remember, next time you buy an internal modem, specify that it's for Linux and
you'll get one that operates properly. Cos Windows won't be here forever.

Thankyou!

Best Rgds

Setting up a 3com Etherlink III ISA card, detects the IRQ and IO
correctly, but the module loading indicates it is using the BNC port.

Went to Donald Becker's site... entered "xcvr=4" in the eth0 module
options under the kernel configurator (in linuxconf), no luck, tried
"xcvr=0" also, which is supposed to indicate the default (usually
10baseT). The module doesn't balk when loading, just loads in as BNC.
