Actually, us folks over here on the west side of the puddle speak
"American English", while the blokes on the east shore speak
"English English" (or "Standard English", or "The Queen's English").
I believe our friends just south of Texas/New Mexico/Arizona have
a similar situation: "Mexican Spanish" vs. "Spanish Spanish".
Same basic language, but "different".
Question: Is the Portuguese spoken in Brazil _identical_ to that
spoken in Lisbon? Or is this a case of "Portuguese
Portuguese" vs. "Brazilian Portuguese"? Same, but
"different".
Remember -- this is a _question_. It is not a troll or flame.

I have the same modem and it works fine in Linux/
Set your port to com2 in Dos and ttys1 in linux and be sure
you set the com jumpers on the board the same.
IRQ's set on board to irq3 and should you use com1,irq4.
If the board has a PNP jumper, disable it, Linux doesn't
like PNP.If Windoze95-98 has a problem with that go into
your Control Panel/Modem setup and select your modem
as a "Standard K56 flex modem" and windows will except it.
These settings I'm giving you are in case you have a serial
mouse on com1 which is normally where they are if they
are serial, If it's a PS2 mouse your okay.
If you do have any other devices on Com ports find out
first and what ports there on.
If you have any problem email me at:

Subject: PCI Modem Driver for Linux (about to attempt one)
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 18:14:05 -0700
I figure I've been living off of other people's work for long enough and
that it's time for me to make a contribution. Since I may as well help
myself in the process, I think I'm going to attempt a PCI Modem driver for
Linux.
Now, I know that there are a few supported chipsets (though, one of them
only works because it supports a UART simulation), but that's all I know.
This is a call for information: anybody have any of these working? Anybody
know what the hard part is? Are the specs for PCI modems around somewhere?
Has anyone dealt with Sony on spec issues before?
Another question relates to why certain PCI modems don't work. One page
that I've read states that "PCI Modems with addresses in high memory use
shared memory, which Linux does not support."
How true is this? What kind of shared memory are we talking about? This
strikes me as a more general problem than just PCI modems; what other
computer parts could use shared memory support under Linux to work?
Is anyone working on related projects? I'd hate to reinvent the wheel.
Oh well, so much for a summer of self-improvement and humanities reading.
I look forward to hearing from all of you.

Try deleting the bitsperpixel line in /var/spool/lpd/lp/postscript.cfg.
That worked for me. I think this bug in the driver was fixed in RedHat
6.0.

I have a SB Vibra16C, and I used to get DMA errors with it, using 2.2.x

out. Recently I gave the card another try, using 2.2.10 and OSS 3.9.2o
Everything works now, so I'm not sure if it was a combination of the

I didn't change anything else, so check your kernel and oss versions, that
might make some difference...

I'm looking for a sound card which has good s/n and also does better
than adequate digitisation - I have old analogue tapes I want to
transfer to CD.
The Turtle Beach Fiji has been suggested as fitting the bill - except
that it seems to be in the unsupported category in the sound HOWTO.
Does anyone have either definitive evidence that the TB Fiji works or
another suggestion for a quality sound card.

I think fd0 is the correct way, but "mount -t fvat" unusable, so try
mount /dev/fd0 /floppy
try midnights commander (mc) to mount.

Subject: MSI 5169 and K6-2/450
Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1999 03:01:46 GMT
Hello,
I've just successfully assembled a system that includes a MicroStar
5169 motherboard (PCB version 3.0) and a K6-2/450 processor.
Well, mostly successfully assembled. I upgraded the BIOS to version 3.1
so that the board would support the chip at 450 MHz (actually, the
preceding BIOS release would have done it too), but the chip still
doesn't do the right thing at 450 MHz. If I try to do anything
memory-intensive at 450 the chip fails on me with signal 11 errors (and
occassionally other kin to signal 11.) If I set the jumper settings on
the motherboard down to what they should be for a K6-2/400, though (100
MHz bus speed, 4.0 multiplier and 2.2 V internal processor voltage
instead of 2.4 V), though, the system is rock-solid. For the heck of it,
I also tried running 450 MHz at 2.2 V, but that didn't work either.
Anyway - my question: has anyone else had difficulty with this
combination of chip and motherboard?
If not, I guess I have a chip that isn't quite up to spec. I bought the
chip OEM (not smart, as I've found out) and the warranty expired before
I could fully assemble the system around it. And yes, I did put a
combination heatsink/fan on it -- though the fan is held on by the metal
clip. Perhaps I should use a heat-conductive glue too... (?)
Anyhow, if anyone has any successes or failures to report about similar
setups, I'd be much obliged.
Other info that might conceivably be useful: I'm running Red Hat 6.0;
I've got 2 128 MB PC100 DIMMS in the system (no-name brand, but lifetime
warranteed); and in the remote event that it'd be useful, the expansion
cards in the system are a Diamond Viper 330 AGP, a Buslogic BT-930
(PCI), an Ensoniq Soundscape 1371 (PCI), and a 3com 3c905b (PCI).
Thanks very much,
Matthew Hiller

Yes yes yes. always the thermal grease and a big fan. You'd be surprised
how many "prebuilt" "quality" machines you can buy that don't have thermal
grease under their heat sinks.

Having cache is the most important thing. How much is secondary. I've
used the FICs with great success, specifically the VA503+ boards. Never
buy the first run (of anybody's board). Be aware that the size of the
cache is more important for how much main memory you can cache! With the
chipset used on the PA series (Apollo Via MVP3+ etc...) the maximum
cacheable main memory is a direct linear function of how much cache you've
got. 512k cache = max cacheable main ram of 128 Meg, 1M cache = 256 Meg,
and 2 Meg cache = 512Meg ram maximum cacheable. If you plan on having 128
Meg only, then the size doesn't matter. If you want to run Gimp across
huge bitmaps, get the bigger cache, cause memory will get cheaper over
time.

The biggest problems I've had have been with early BIOSes, with all
motherboards. Never buy a MB without at least about a revision 3 or so of
the BIOS. On Intel make that about a 6, they come out with them a little
quicker. Mature technology is preferred.
I've had good luck with all the major brands when I've stuck to that rule.

The file to download is RIVA-X-GLX-1.0-glibc-i386-dyn.tar.gz. The
XFree rpm you mention isn't from nvidia's site, is it? The RIVA* file
I mention is. It contains an X server (also glx module and the Mesa
library needed for running opengl applications) called XF86_SVGA.
Basically, I just reused the same XF86Config file I had been using
with my Matrox G200, just replaced the video card definition. With
most of the modern video cards, I find that the modelines more reflect
the performance of the display than the video card.
The video card definition I use is:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Diamond Viper 770"
VendorName "Unknown"
BoardName "Unknown"
Chipset "RIVATNT2"
EndSection

Please visit the list at:
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
which has both Linux-compatible and -incompatible modems listed.
Generally speaking, external (serial port) modems are easier to use than
internals and internal modems wth jumpers are easier to configure than
PnP-only ISA modems.

My guess is
1) You do not have the sound module loaded
cat /dev/sndstat
should show what devices are configured and if none
then check to see if you have sound modules which
need loading
ls /lib/modules/2.0.37/misc (use your version number)
will show all the sound modules (and others)
2) You do not have sound support, or your support is not
set to your soundcard. This would be very strange for a
distribution; almost all include sound support, but perhaps
it is loading the wrong one, or using IRQ 7 instead of IRQ 5
If you are brave enough to fix it yourself (go ahead! it's fun!) Look
in the /docs/HOWTO directory of your Linux CD and find the
Sound-HOWTO, then follow that advice carefully.

Hey, I'm writing to one to ya at 1024x768. Haven't gotten it to work
higher than that, but may need to tweak my monitor settings.
And it works just as well when I reboot to run games.
