Check out "Dave's Experiences at Fry's Electronics" web pages at

  <http://www.accesscom.com/~dave6592/frys.html>

before visiting an actual store. My favorite TITLE, at least, is on Page
10: "I HATE FRY'S MORE THAN GIANT RED AMAZONIAN FIRE ANTS STINGING ME IN

you leave, although it comes close.

You can sometimes get pretty decent prices at Fry's--if you're an expert,
know EXACTLY what you want, and are willing to put up with the "help". I
doubt you can beat the prices from places like www.buybuddy.com, but if
you need to get your hands on it NOW, Fry's is a very popular place.
Since I'm often in that situation, where Fedex would kill my savings, I
shop there a lot.

They do NOT have a web page. That would be like waving a red flag in
front of a bull, especially for Linux users ;-)

Does that hard drive have more than 1024 cylinders?
I don't know if you already know this, but LILO has the 1024 cyl
limit. I don't know how linux takes LBA into effect either, but
you may have to play with BIOS settings on LBA translation.

If you have a hard drive less than 500Mb, I would try to see
if LILO can even get past the "LILO" prompt with it.

good luck,
Scott.

Frans,

I just had a look at the SuSE 6.1 manual and it seems that you CAN install from
a parallel-port CD-ROM.

When you pick the installation medium, choose CD-ROM. I presume that it will
then try to mount the CD and fail because it is looking in the usual place. You
can then tell it to look in the Parallel port when the dialog menu pops up.
It's the last option on the list.

I will probably be buying a motherboard real soon with on-board
everything--including a network card. I think the brand is AMD
PCNET also. I have been reading everything I can to find out
what this NIC chipset supports as far as OS's goes. Reading
the Linux _Ethernet How-To_ says that AMD PCNET chipsets
should work by loading the LANCE or NE1500 modules.

Try that out. I would *VERY* much be interested in your
results... if it worked or not. Is your NIC onboard?

Scott.

I downloaded the newest version of X from the xfree comepage and I did
another SuperProbe.
irst video: Super-VGA
Chipset: Trident (chipset unknown) (PCI Probed)
                Signature data: 84001023 (please report)
        Memory: 2048 Kbytes
        RAMDAC: Sierra SC1148{2,3,4} 15-bit or SC1148{5,7,9} 15/16-bit
HiColor
                 (with 8-bit wide lookup tables)

Since is this the end of the road for me in terms on configurig this
onboard AGP with X? I do not intend on even trying to write drivers
since I have no ida where to start. I do not want to run it as a VGA
server. Guess I'll have to shove a svga card in for the time being.

have a Linux app that can generate these packets.

Where did you find the dos/win apps to send magic packets?

I'm curious about your onboard sound problems with the SoundPro(?) chipset.
I planned on buying a motherboard with onboard everything--including the

Gee, I guess that means I should put off trying Linux until I have a card
and system that is all supported, right ? I mean, what the hell, it all
runs under Windoze just fine, but if I have to purchase new hardware to
leave windows, I guess I should just hold on to it as is. Thanks for the
tip. I may have wasted a lot of time scrambling to try and find somebody on
the net with a driver.

What settings sould I have in my /etc/conf.modules to get the sound card
to work on a ThinkPad 600?

Some sound works and some does not .
*.mid, and cd music work.
*.wav files do not work.

I ran sndconfig, and selected the Crystal audio Driver, accepting the

Now the /etc/conf.modules looks like this:

pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias sound cs4232
pre-install sound insmod sound dmabuf=1

Thanks for your answer. Every help is valuable:)

Are there problems in configuration of the modem-cable I have with Linux. I
am thinking of configurations of proxy setings, etc. I know how to configure
it in Windows 95/98. Is it similar in Linux?

I plan to buy a comprehensive manual for Linux before I dare to install it.
