Which kind of linux shells? As you probably already know, but some
people might not, the older pre-2.0.34 shells (aka the 'green-slime'
shells) will only work with Seagate 1.2GB and smaller drives provided
they also have a double-ended ribbon cable (two red stripes, on the
outside edge wires). From 2.0.34-2.0.36 shells (aka 'dog-days'), only
the 2.1-6.4GB ISA drives work as long as the ribbon cable is grey. The
more modern shells (aka "Troll-house Cookies") most anything works. You
should still post your linux shell color so people can send you the
right disk.

Hey,

I have a "Best Buy 9630 S" scanner and would like to use
it on my Linux (Suse R6) System.

What I have read so far, only some scanner can be used on
linux systems, so I'm wondering if anyone has experience with
this type of scanner ?

Thanks,

This sounds like a heavily used server and I'd be very wary of basing
any performance conclusions on listening to disk seeks.

Try running vmstat and a single shot top* in a 30 second loop for 24
hours and see if the hog processes aren't easily identified. A little
correlation on the log file should tell an accurate story of which
processes are grabbing resources.

* e.g.- 'vmstat -n 30' and 'sleep 30; top -Sbn1'

Trying to install mandrake 6.0.Boots of cd just fine until you get to
installation type:select cdrom get this message mount failed,i could not
mount a cd on device/dev/hdc.From Alt-F4 get <4>hdc:Cdrom_pc_intr:The
drive appears confused(ireason = 0x 1) <4>hdc:lost interupt.
On initial boot up I can see that it detects my cdrom.
I tried to install from hard drive and could not make start-up disk or
install lilo.

   I have a P75,48megs ram,nec cdrom:273,win98 on first hard drive,with
two logical partitions and this drive, also has a drive overlay.Second
hard drive is where I'm trying to put linux(drive is 1.7g).

I used this same package with win95 on this machine with no problems.
This drive crashed for some reason,so i upgraded to win 98 on first drive
and installed a second drive for linux.

        Any help would be appreciated

Dan: I really did start from scratch, including complete repartitioning of
the disk, so there can't be any remnants of the previous mess. I printed a
detailed list of the new partitions with fdisk, specifying boundaries in
sectors instead of cylinders, and I still can't see any conflicts. It
would now be so much work to repartition and reinstall yet again that I
think I'll just take the chance, making sure I don't ever completely fill
up any partitions. Yes -- I'm an optimist.

A friend has bought 10 ICL ergo pro's (486 dx2-66, 8Mb) to
be used as simple NAT boxes (linux ipmasq) on cable and
dsl providers to share internet connections.

The ICLs have onboard scsi (NCR 53c94) but this chip seems
only supported on NCR machines with MCA bus, on certain macs
and suns, but not on onboard ISA. While browsing some of the
scsi kernel sources I noticed there's a generic 53c94 driver in
2.2.12, but how do I get it to run on onboard ISA ?

I've got a HP35480A and I've been having nothing but trouble
since I purchased it (had success with a conner DAT though :).
Basically, I can't succesfully read or write to or from a DAT -
between I/O errors and SCSI bus timeouts, nothing works. Trying
to view or extract a tar on a DAT I'd made earlier, sends the
drive off (presumably reading) for a while. Despite using the
'v' option with tar, I get no feedback, and the drive just sits
there, reading a bit, going 'clunk', sometimes rewinding a
little, then reading again - and so on. Eventually, I get some
sort of SCSI timeout. <sigh>

The conner drive works fine... (and the DAT's themselves are
fine)

So: does your drive actually make any motions when you send
either mt or tar commands to it? If not, then it could be
perhaps a SCSI configuration error. If so, then it could be a
'HP error' like I'm getting :/

And as a side-note, could anyone recommend what SCSI settings I
should be using with such a tape drive? I haven't been able to
find out much on the web, and I'm looking for recommendations
for such values as 'Command Queueing' and 'Synchronous
Transfers' - what do tape drives usualy take for SCSI settings?

Well, hope you have more luck than me :)

Cheers,
