Hi Miguel! Jeff here. Are you sure about this chip? I have the same
card, and I believe it is actually an es1370 *not* 1371, if mem serves
me correctly. If I'm correct, could be the whole problem right there.
However, here's a new spin. I use both COL 2.2 and Red Hat 6.0. In
Caldera sound is excellent. In Red Hat, under Gnome, all system sounds
are okay, but I can't listen to a musical cd, play wav files or
whatever. LOL Go figger! :p

It's not the density, it's the size of the tape. See the dump(8) "s" option.

Hi,

I plan to buy one of HP's CD-Writer 7570i or 7540i for use on my linux PC. I
have two questions about it:

1. Are these CD-Writers supported? They are not on the official compatibility
list.... Has anyone used one of the above two write CDs under linux?

2. What is the difference between these two CD-Writers anyway? From the product
description and technical specs they seem to be identical. However, the 7540i is
a little bit cheaper. Is there anything I missed?

Please answer per E-Mail, if possible.

Michael

Remove the ide-cdrom module, it's incompatible with the scsi emulation.

What goes wrong? You could always grab the latest source and build a new
module. Not sure if your particular card works with the latest version,
but it would be a place to start.

Probably. The first item in the make (menu/x)config is to prompt for
experimental/development stuffs. This needs to be turned on so that it
will later allow you to select the special stuff for *your* boards IDE
chipset, and to check the 'use dma if available' options.

Note that for large drives, you might have to go into the cmos on the
board, and set the drives for 'LBA' mode.

The rest of it is fairly well described in the kernel-HOWTO's.

Note too that 2.2.7 is an older kernel. I'm running 2.2.12, with those
options turned on, and getting about 12.75 megs/sec here.

Cheers, Gene

A switch would be nice, but I think it would make the system too
expensive. A 3 or 4 unit switches are fairly reasonable, but I've got 6
systems, and the switch it self would cost more than what I paid for one
of the systems, plus more $ for all the extra cables. But thanks for the
tip, I'll check out the keyboards (I don't think I'll need the mouse). I
know that most non-intel based unix boxes need to have the keyboard
present during boot, if you want to use it afterwards.

What init string are you using? I have one o those and it need AT&F1 as
the init string.

Otherwise I have had no problems with this modem (Linux/i386, Win98,
Linux/m68k, AmigaOS and MacOS!)

Maybe the answer is in the Matrox Millenium Users note of X.3.3.4 (or

In RH, log on as root, and put a line 'alias eth0 ne2k-pci' in the file
/etc/conf.modules, then issue the command 'modprobe eth0' to load the
module. Of course you have to setup IP routing table with 'route' command.
If you are not comfortable with doing all these manually, run 'netconf',
click 'client tasks', in the pop up window, click 'Adaptor 1', in the
'kernel module' choose 'ne2k-pci', that's all you need to use this module.
You have to go through all the menus to specify other necessary
parameters for your need.

Good luck.
