I am running a K6-2-450 with Mandrake (optimized Red Hat) and it is
very fast, stable and no compatibility problems. You might want to
take a look at Mandrake as it is Pentium optimized.

I have a Umax 610S scanner hooked to my SCSI card. What you want is a cable
as you describe above. However, you might have better luck finding one if
you refer to it as a Mac to SCSI II cable or as a DB25 to micro DB50 cable.
The DB25 connection is a Mac kludge, the micro DB50 connection is SCSI II.
Try Mac stores as well.
SCSI 11 has 50 wires, 24 carrying signals and 26 at ground
potential. A real SCSI II cable will have a signal wire and a
ground wire as a twisted pair. Apple, in their infinite wisdom (may
the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits), decided the
MacIntoy didn't really need such quality. So the Mac kludge has the
standard 24 signal wires and only one ground wire.

Well, for one thing it doesn't use an IRQ. It's a throwaway, junk card.
If you want to use your scanner in any OS other than windows, get a real SCSI
card. One based upon the NCR/Symbios 810 chip works great in all OS's (Win98,
OS/2, NT, Linux). They are busmastering PCI cards, though (which is what
you want.) They are also sold very inexpensively nowadays.
You will need a cable as described above, though.
Cheers,
Rob

Hi, i'm having the same problem, and honestly i think it has to do with the
Ali V Chipset, which uses the 1541-1543 integrated chip for both
busmastering and agp port support. i don't think it has to do with bios
settings, as the bios report screen identifies my drive correctly to be
udma2. But i do think however, that under the current stable versions of the
kernel (2.2.1 and up) it is still a problem to get udma66 going. i have
heard of a solution to work around this under dos setting the busmaster to
udma 33 but couldnt get any proper information on how to do this. any help
on this would be appreciated, and as this is a chipset used quite a lot i
think a lot of people would be grateful for it.
thanks a bunch in adv.

Personally, I find a P200 or P200 mmx to be plenty fast enough for these
apps. If I have at least 128MB of ram, I'm all set, becuse I run
similar programs and do a LOT of multi tasking.

Personally, I might go with a K63 or a celery and get 256 Ram instead.
This will make more of a difference if you're doing a lot of demanding
multi-tasking than the faster processor will.

Both OSs do SMP fairly well, I would say that with the 2.2 kernels on
Linux they're about on par. But like I said before, for heavy duty
multitasking RAM is more important than processor speed.

Get yourself a G200 if you can get it, they're GREAT cards for running
X, and have very good drivers for NT as well.

if you do `ls -l /dev/hdc` you should get something
like this. (the "root" and "disk" thing may be different)
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 0 Dec 17 1998 /dev/hdc
-are you sure that the drive is master on the secondary
ide interface ?
if it is slave on the first interface the divice is /dev/hdb.
for slaves on the secondary interface it is /dev/hdd
-the directory you are mounting to ('/mnt/cdrom')
must exist before you try mounting. maybe there is
just /mnt.
check if the CD is ok. try a normal (pressed not written) one.
could be that the line is /etc/fstab is messed up.
this should do is without reading that file.
mount -t iso9660 -o defaults,ro /dev/hdc /mnt/
hope that helped.

I am trying to set up a friend's new Inspiron 7000 but can't get it to start
the pcmcia (and, therefore his network card). During the boot process there
is a mention of the pcmcia and it is supposed to be activated (set in
linuxconf). But it clearly isn't as lsmod doesn't list it. Sounds like I am
overlooking something quite simple, but what is it?

Actually /dev/cdrom should be a symlink to your real cdrom (hdb, hdc
etc. ) then a mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom should do the trick. (-t
defaults to iso9660)

It's not clear if you are using software or hardware RAID.
Anyway, try adding a line to /etc/fstab to mount RAID
partition, but in
`options` field put noauto, usrquota. For example:
/dev/md1 /mp3 ext2 noauto,usrquota 1 1
Good luck.

You could try the linux drivers on Creative Labs website:
XF86_Banshee-1.01.tar.gz. I have an Elsa Victory II not a Banshee Blaster,
and the driver works well in rh 5.2. You may want to drastically change the

The rocker is ignored unless you put the trackpad into ``absolute mode,''
in which raw finger positions instead of motion events are reported to
the kernel. In Win-9x the driver uses the trackpad in this mode. The X
server could do the same, but it does not at the present time. I have some
patches, but they're still pretty rough.

P.S.: Hi from that ugly building with the boarded-up windows just to your

Subject: Help Choosing a new CPU
Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 16:33:29 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am getting ready to replace a Micron system that is a Pentium 200MHz
CPU, 96MB of RAM, 6.4GB HD, and Diamond Stealth 2000 3D Pro running
Windows NT4/SP5 and Linux Mandrake 6.0 in a dual-boot config. I will
be replacing it with a homebuilt system that a friend of mine is
making. I can choose any components I want to go inside this thing.
Currently (and projected for the future), the primary applications I
run on this machine are MS Office 97 Pro, MS IE 5, Outlook Express,
Homesite, IDL (graphics imaging), SPSS (statistical), and Adobe
PageMill under WNT while Netscape, Star Office 5.1, Gimp, and
Wordperfect run under Linux. I regularly have multiple applications
up and running as I am switching data between programs.
What I want to know is the following: Would I be better off getting a
PII or PIII 450MHz processor and Abit or Asus motherboard with 128MB
PC100 RAM or running a Celeron 433MHz/466MHz/500MHz on an ABIT BM6
motherboard with 128MB PC100 RAM? Is there THAT much of a performance
difference between the Pentium II/III and the Celerons with the above
applications? I DO NOT want to overclock the Celeron if I go that
route.
At the same time, would it be even better to run an ABIT BP6 with dual
Celeron 433's (not overclocked) and 128MB aof RAM? Both Linux and NT
handle SMP so I would guess there would be a speed gain with this
option.
Of most importance here is that the system is fast and STABLE. I want
to stay away from overclocking because I don't know enough about it
and I don't want to have to be worried about burning up my hardware.
Also, would someone recoommend an AGP video card that is stable under
both of these operating systems (WNT and LINUX). Something that is
say 8-16MB.
Thanks a ton in advance for everyone's comments, help, and feedback.
Hope this doesn't start a global flame war!

All. FYI the latest driver 0.91e available from
cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.html
does the trick. Throughput on T100 network is fantastic.
Overall the 1800T works great under Linux. X runs well under the latest
XFree86
release, the LS-120 is supported fine.
Sound & modem are the only remaining deficiencies.
I recommend this box highly, it's very well executed.
