Hi Mr. Taylor,
Thanks for replying to my posting. You say that you have both these
monitors (kds vs-195 and vs-19sn) at work. Do you perfer one over
the other and why?
Thanks again.

While I don't have that particular scanner I can give you some pointers.
I have an Adaptec 152x SCSI card, a cheap card which came free with
my Agfa scanner.
To get linux to cope OK with it, I disabled Plug & Play and set it up so
that it worked in Windows 95. If I remember correctly I had to make one
change to an IRQ setting. I also had to re-compile my kernel to add SCSI
generic support and support for the 152x series of SCSI cards.
Then, I needed to add this line to my /etc/lilo.conf:
append="aha152x=0x140,9,7"
This ensures that Linux is able to see the card and whatever is attached to it.
Hope this helps.

It depends of how new your card is, but try the ensoniq soundescape 1371 (es1371)
or the 1370 module, it shuld detect the I/O an irq itself, I use a SB PCI 64 with
teh es 1371 and it works just fine. (I run debian slink 2.2.10)

Chuckle...
Mine, like yours, is on 24/7/365. I expect thats about the rank I'd
creep up to if I shut down the rc5 search. With both running at a
nice=20, they split the cpu when I'm otherwise occupied. Keeps it from
getting lazy I guess.
And, who knows, someday I might turn on the monitor and note that it may
have scanned something worth taking a closer look at. I'm not sure it
would tell you in so many words though, some folks might panic, and I'm
reasonably sure the authors considered that.
Cheers, Gene

Just noticed your posting. I am looking for a PCI modem that will work with
Linux. I volunteered to setup a server for a charity organization and one of the
things they want is to use it as a proxy server. Any advice would be
appreciated.
However, if I understand your posting correctly, you are having trouble using
your modem with Linux because of the IRQ settings the modem takes. Have your
tried setting the modems IRQ from the BIOS? In my limited experience with the
ALi chipset, this does fix the IRQ for the slot in which a card is placed.

Here are some that have been shown to work with Linux:
Actiontec PCI56012 (including call-waiting models)
== IBM 33L4618
Multitech MT5634ZPX-PCI
3Com 3CP5610 (and possibly 3CP5609?)
These modems will be more expensive than ISA modems, and you may want to
consider an external modem instead.

One thing even more important than the card-type are the used protocols.
To get peak-values transfer a cached file over FTP directly to
/dev/null. I also have got NE2000 and i reach with this method values up
to 1 MB/s (dx2/66 to k5/133 over BNC). But on the other side i can also
achiv values as low as 150 Kb/s with Windows/SMB.
Hope this helps

Hi,
I'm completely new to Linux.
Having unpacked & Installed my new SuSE Linux 6.2, i'm having a few
questions.
* Is it possible to play my Windows-based games under Linux? (ed. Toca2,
Need 4 speed)
* Why can't I use the Viper 770 driver for my 770 Ultra card, while it is
supported by my version of Linux? (It gives an error message when selecting
the viper 770. I'm running with the Viper 550 drivers, wich works fine, but
obviously not taking the full advantage of my card.
* I have installed the drivers for my Teles Bri16.3 ISDN adapter, with no
problems. But how can I use my card to connect on the Internet? The Dial-up
software that I could find in X supported only analog modems??
* Is it possible to acces my FAT32 partition of my harddisk on wich I have
installed Windows 98?
* Does anyone know a good cd-recording program for Linux, like Nero? Maybe
there is a Nero version for Linux??
* My Linux package contains 6 cd's, but only using the 1st 3 cd's. What's
with the other 3 cd's??
As you see I have quite a lot questions, but then again, I'm completely new
to Linux, so please explain the sollutions very detailed :-)
My system:
Asus P2B-F mainboard, bios rev. 1010.07
Intel Pentium III 500

Diamond Viper V770 Ultra 32MB AGP videocard
Creative SB. Live! Value soundcard
IBM DTA 7200rpm 10,1 GB HD on IDE 0 with 2 partitions, on the 1st I have
installed MS Windows 98 (Fat 32) and on the 2nd partition installed Linux

Would that I had that experience. I have an SB 16, and ran sndconfig.
It autodetected the card, updated the files, tried to play a sound to
test its work, and failed, reporting "device busy"...and then offered
to let me configure the board myself. The board is Plug and Pray, so
I can't force it to a particular setting. The sndconfig is whatever

First a question, what patch did you use to support the HPT366, where did
you get it, applied to which Kernel version?
Second a suggestion, your problem may be caused by an older version of
lilo. Had a similar problem, error message, trying to boot off the third
Ide interface ide3 (on a Promise Ultra33) had to download the latest lilo
version from :
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo/
my solution was lilo version 1.21 on RH5.2. I do hope this helps, and I am
interested in where you got/downloaded the patch as I am in the process of
