Slackware 4.0

Don't you hate when people answer questions like that in newsgroups...I
sure do.

OK, I almost have the real answer
the public currently likes
Mandrake 6
over
Suse 6.1

but the KING OF THE HILL is the slacker with 1400+ votes

Actually, depending on your BIOS, there may not be any BIOS limitation.
As far as the disk size, you probably have Logical Block Addressing LBA
set to on in your BIOS, since Windows doesn't work well with large drives
(NT is a bit better in that regard). You may also have jumpers on your
drive for LBA. A number of things to try. You may have to temporarily
turn off LBA (in BIOS, on jumpers, whatever) so Disk Druid can see the
drive, probably need to use linear mode at the end of the install (so you
won't get the dreaded LI on boot up), and then turn LBA back on when you
re-boot after install (or you once again get LI). It can be a mess
getting it all just so.

Another option is if you know the correct disk geometry cylinders,
sectors, etc, use fdisk. In fdisk you can force the drive to that
specification, no matter what the computer thinks it is (just make sure
you've really got your number right). That will force the system to allow
you the whole disk for partitoning. You'll still have to play around with
linear mode in the final part of the install (you probably need it), but
you can avoid messing with BIOS and jumpers by using fdisk.

I can only answer the qustion about the V770. If you go to Nvidia's website
(www.nvidia.com) and go to the Driver's section, you can download the Linux
driver for the V770. Follow the FAQ and instructions that come with the
download, and you will be set. If you are like me, and couldn't get X to
run, and thus couldn't use Nutscrape to get the drivers, type 'lynx' at the
command prompt, and press 'g' to goto a URL, type in 'www.nvidia.com' and
navigate through the pages to the drivers. Lynx may seem a little difficult
to use, but it can be a life saver.

Good luck!

I use a c-media soundpro chip built into my motherboard as my sound card.
Unfortunately I cannot get it working under RedHat Linux 6.0 . I found a
linux driver for it on their website and followed their instructions but
cannot get the driver working. The problem is that when I issue a final
'modprobe cmpci' command I always get an error that the device is already
in use. I was wondering if anyone else has worked with the c-media chip
under linux and has and knows what is wrong?

I have a recent kernel (2.3.6), and from the nvidia website, the latest
drivers. I do not yet have my tnt2 card, which I just bought on ebay. It
looks like I'm going to have to reinstall a Win32 partition to use this
card to play quake3, which I do not want to do. The Linux TNT driver
uses xfree, and doesn't seem to support >16bpp. Well, I already have
that with a decent framerate with my old Voodoo2 card. I want the
texture size and 32 bpp! Am I up a creek?

Subject: Re: NE2000 only does 80KB/sec

How are you doing mounts? How is your network set up? How are the card
jumpers set?
What is the ftp speed when you do a get/put to /dev/null?

In general you should expect to get around 850KB/s on a quiet wire. I
have two NE2000's, one on a PCI 472MHz Celeron 300A and the other on a
ISA 486 DX4/100.

The fastest transfer is ftp from a RAID0 filesystem on the 300A to
/dev/null on the 486, which gives 1150KB/s. The slowest is from the
300A to disk on the 486, which was 663KB/s. If disk subsystem speed is
substantially different on one side it can influence perceived network
speed depending on transfer direction:

/dev/md0:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 64 MB in 0.56 seconds =114.29 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 1.70 seconds =18.82 MB/sec

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 64 MB in 3.67 seconds =17.44 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 13.10 seconds = 2.44 MB/sec

Both NICs are on a direct point-to-point network, half-duplex. The
drops and framing errors indicate the 486 side is not as clean as the
300A:

This goes out to all my lovely flamers:

It's amazing how much indignation can be provoked when you try to get
Americans to peer out of their insular, all things beef and ammo, truth
justice and the american way, precious little world. I'm an Australian.
I would never try to justify my governments' actions over East Timor.
They've been abhorrent. And don't laud your right to bear arms over the
plight of small peoples like the East Timorese. Your country has
reserved the right to arm every oppressive, tyrranical government the
world has seen. Where did Saddam get his weapons, hmmm? Straight from
Uncle Sam.

I love the response "Well if you care so much, go over there and
fight," like a three-year-old. I wasn't asking for the US to go in and
fight. No one expects them to. This is Asia, and there are no
communists, so, like, who cares? Australia is leading the peace keeping
effort, and the US is wishing us luck. So much for all the fighting
we've done in your wars - Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, etc.

Anyway, have a nice time playing with your little nerd boxes and making
your little Bill Gates jokes. Rest assured that no one is ever going to
walk in and hack your children to death, because you're Americans, and
hell, you're all armed to the teeth just in case.

Netscape 4.5x & 4.6x do this when a name lookup never returns.

Try using strace in attach to PID mode (-p option). Just prior to the
action that causes a hang, launch strace with Netscape's PID. In my
case the log file pointed out it never returns from a name lookup* and
instead falls in to a memory allocation loop (sbrk() calls).

I also bought a new hard drive which is 13GB, and when I used DOS fdisk,
it didn't see the space after 8GB. The reason is that your motherboard
BIOS is old. Here are the options that you can do:
1. flash your BIOS: go to your motherboard manufacturer's web site and
find if there is any update to the BIOS according to your motherboard.
But be careful, if the update is not successful, your motherboard is dead.
2. use the driver (a diskette provided by the manufacturer) of the new
hard drive to make partition. The driver program inside can see all
   13BG.
3. This option is what I take to resolve this problem. I use RH6.0 fdisk
to partition my 13GB hard drive. RH6.0 fdisk can see all my 13GB. For
other versions of RH, I am not sure if they can see all 13GB space.

Subject: Re: How To Format Old Linux Partitions??
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 05:49:04 GMT

First off partitions are partitions regardless of who made them. It is
true that Partition Magic lets you play some neat tricks with shrinking,
reordering, etc...but the fact remains that they are still just standard
partitions.
So to clear a partition manually just unmount it, and then remake
the file system. To do this you will normally want to use the standard
"mke2fs" utility (see the man) and then adjust the parameters with
"tune2fs". As an example:

> mke2fs -c /dev/hda1

would generically reformat the first partition of the first IDE drive and
perform bad block testing. For fancier invocations see the man pages.

As an alternative you can just install SuSE. The install should at one
point prompt you to repartition the disk (just keep the existing ones) and
then later it should prompt you for whether or not to reformat the
partitions (and here you would let it) The advantage of this method is of
course that it will use version of the formating utility that corresponds
to the distribution. In your case this is not a big concern, but for
individuals who are upgrading from an early SLACware version or a home
brew this can cause difficulties (especially if you distribution was
early in the 1.2 kernel days)

I have a P6DGU.

I run Red Hat 6, Win 98, and Solaris 7.

My memory is Toshiba THMY7216E1EG-80H, 128MB part. Works great. I
purchased
it at SuperMicro's recommendation. Any of the RAM that they recommend
should
work great.

The 7890 in general should not be used with a bunch of disparate devices

(specifically LVD and SE), but . . .
The P6DGU uses a transceiver to allow LVD and SE devices at the same
time. I
have an LVD HDD, a Plextor CDR, a Pioneer DVD, and a really crappy
narrow
HDD. And it all works great.

I believe, however, that you may only use two of the onboard connectors
at a
time. (This is generally true of SCSI controller with three ports, and I

have no reason to believe that you may use all three because of the
transceiver.)

By the way, the "Manufactures setting" in the BIOS increases the FSB.
It's
not the best overclokcers MB but it has some capabilities.

Whoops, I made a little mistake there. =)

    It's a GDM-1630SG.

Hi,

I also had similar problems. What I did was to set the bios parameters
to 1023/255/63 thus I was able to boot. (It is a rather old bios). When
I fdisked the disk I simply switched to expert mode and redefined the
cylinder count. YMMV. Don't forget to check waht the kernel reports
about the disk when it boots up.
