Hi, folks,
Thanks to everybody.
I followed the piece of advice given and got this "cross-over" cable.
Now both RX and TX LEDs on both cards are mostly on.
I also downloaded diagnostics program from Intel.
It's for DOS only, so when I ran it on both mashines
the hardware tests were just fine and network connectivity test
was wonderful both ways (each of the machines sending and receiving
just fine).
Inspired by this I tried again to install linux on 486 via NFS from
celeron's cdrom. Nah!
No NFS,ftp connection, no nothing again. I set the default route on celeron
to 486 IP and vice versa. I set their IP's also.
The weirdest thing is - whenever I try to ping IP assigned to 486
from cel, it doesn't go through AND send the bunch of
error messages to console (dmesg showes them).
They're mostly "eth0 not bla-bla" followed by
"Trying to reset the i8####" (don't remember the number - it's a
network card's main chip, I guess)
"Reset timed out.."
"Board is on fire?" (this one is so cute, I love this)
"<4>"
The same thing happenes if I try to telnet that host.
Telnet returns: "No route to host" while the bunch of the same stuff
as above goes to console.
My real big question now is: Can I get going without a hub?
Could it be that due to the "timings mismatch" It's just impossible to
built a connection without it?
Please, anybody, if you know for sure that it's (im)possible
to make my hardware configuration work without a hub, tell me!
Cheers

This may be a shot in the dark, but if you are brand new to
Linux, you may not know that drives with removable media need
to be mounted before they can be used. To mount a floppy,
you'll
need to create a directory on the tree, customarily /mnt/floppy
or something like it. Then, put the disk in the drive and type:
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
where /dev/fd0 is the block device for the floppy. It always
has this
designation on 1 floppy systems. If there is more than one, it
will be designated fd1, fd2, etc.
Similarly, for a cdrom you would create the directory and
type:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
IMPORTANT:
When you remove the disk from the drive, you must unmount it
by typing:
umount /mnt/cdrom or umount /mnt/floppy
before you can use the device with a different disk.
Your system probably is set up so you have to be "root" to do
this.
You'll probably want to change this.
Note-- graphical environments like KDE and GNOME automate
these processes,
so you can do this with a mouse click.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Problem with IDE disk
Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 15:52:08 +0200
Hi all:
I have a newer RH 6.0 (kernel 2.2.5-15smp) installed with a ST34311A HD
IDE as primary master (no one disk is
present in the bus) with S.M.A.R.T. option active in BIOS.
The system seems to run ok but looking at the kernel messages file the
following message is issued some times:
Sep 14 13:58:19 proto kernel: hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE
Sep 14 13:58:19 proto kernel: ide0: reset: success
The same messages are raised with S.M.A.R.T. deactivated and the message
seems to appear more frecuently when the
device is performing reads or writes.
Anyone knows what is happening?
Can I solve this problem (or it isn't a problem)?
TIA

For what? A 128K connect? They're set up for it alright. I *can*
make the physical connection on both channels, I just can't see the
data on the computer afterward. If I turn the baud rate down on pppd
to 57600, it *does* work on both channels. Of course, there's not
much point in doing that, but it does work, so I don't think the ISP
is the isue, unless I've missed something (which is entirely
possible).

Yes. It's an *external* ISDN TA, connected to a serial port. To
Linux, it looks just like any other modem. I don't even have ISDN
enabled in the kernel. (Remember, it works fine at 64K. I have
another machine at work that runs fine on 115K. Both are set up as
regular modems. The fact that they are really ISDN is irrelevant to
Linux.)

I have a voodoo3 3500 and a monitor that can handle 1600x1200 and
31-95khz horizontal and 50-160hz vertical. when i go through linux setup
(redhat) it doesnt have my video card or my monitor listed so i went to
custom, chose SVGA as the service i think (my other options were like
VGA and such) then i chose a horizontal range of 50-150 (i also tried
other smaller ranges) and 1600x1200 @ 76hz for my monitor (again i also
tried other monitor settings). Then when i chose screen size and colors
only 640x480 and 16 colors would work. Do you know anything i could do
to get a screensize that i can actually work with? all my windows are
way to huge to manage and each icon is about 3 inches tall.

Subject: X and correct video signal
Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 14:11:21 GMT
Hi,
I've configured X with the provided tools (Xconfigurator, xf86config
etc.) and tried some settings by hand. I've searched every corner of
the net about this problem which seems to be a config problem. Still
I'm not able to get the video signal right on my LCD screen. I'm using
a Chips & Techn. 65535 video chip with an 9.5 inch lcd screen. If I
connect a external monitor the screen is OK but on the LCD screen the
screen is a bit weird. Two dark stripes in the middle and bottom and a
bit wavy. It's quite obvious that there is a problem with settings for
the LCD screen. I can't figure out what I should change. Perhaps the
videotimings. Perhaps someone else can help me out.
The system is:
AcerNote 760iC 20MB RAM
RH 6.0 X11R6 3.3.1 (I think)
512 KB VideoRAM 9.5 inch LCD screen
maximum resolution 640x480x256
The VGA16 server isn't working either cause I can't find any right
settings for the videomodes.

Arnaud Loonstra

Just mount the partition under Linux. You can mount FAT16 and FAT32
partitions under Linux for read/write if you want. Something like:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda2 /mnt/whatever
Substitute your actual partition name and mount point, and then your
FAT drive will appear under the mount point you gave it. If you don't
know what the partition name is, use fdisk to find out. (df" will
tell you what partitions you have mounted, so look in fdisk for your
other partitions.)

Subject: Best Video Card - Best Sound Card - HELP!!
Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 12:37:17 GMT
Your 2 cents worth please!
I want 16/32M AGP graphics with good 3D performance, a TV tuner (I
guess this needs a BT848 or similar), realtime video capture & playback
(some form of MPEG compression?). I don't need Linux support for the TV
or Video right away so long as it's in the pipeline. Am I expecting too
much from one card? Am I better off buying a graphics card and a
seperate TV/Video card - if so, please let me have your recommendations.
I am aware that some graphics card manufacturers have been hostile, or
less than helpful, to the open source community and I would prefer not
to buy their products, given a choice.
Regarding sound cards, most of the advice I have received points to the
sound blaster awe64 or such. What of the SoundBlaster Live! value or
quality clones.
All advice gratefully received.

I have an Epson Stylus Color 440, and it works fine with Linux.
You'll need a recent version of ghostscript. I use apsfilter to set
it up, but that's optional.
With ghostscript, you can either use the stylus color driver or the
uniprint driver (I use the latter).
I even have netatalk set up, and my wife can print to it from her iMac.
What I haven't done is investigate different printing resolutions. It
prints normal text fine, and it prints color fine, but I haven't tried
printing detailed pictures, so I'm not sure how well that works
without tuning the drivers.
The 440 is NOT a WinPrinter.

Hi,
The as86 program that is required is contained in a package that you may
not have installed.
as I don't remember the name, put your installation CDROM
mount the CDROM --> mount /mnt/cdrom
then :
cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
ls *.rpm | gawk '{print "----"$1"----"; system("rpm -qlp "$2)}' >
/usr/packages.files
you'll get a file that contain all files installed by all packages.
format : ----package1----
/.../.../file1
/.../.../file2
/.../.../file3
----package2----
/.../.../filen
/.../.../filen+1
then edit this file (/usr/packages.listing), search the as86 file and go up
until the name of the package.
Install it and retry to compile.
