I'm not using this specific product, but I am using a 5-port Linksys
10/100 hub and a Linksys 10/100 NIC in one of my computers. They work
fine, though the vast majority of the Linksys 10/100 NICs on store shelves
today use PNIC Tulip clone chips rather than "genuine" DEC Tulip chips.
The result is that you'll probably have to recompile your kernel (or at
least your Tulip driver) to get the board to work with Linux.

One other caveat: Some kits of the type you describe come with 10/100 NICs
but only 10Mbps hubs, or some other crippling feature. Be sure that ALL
the components are capable of the 100Mbps speed.

Subject: cd audio problem on mandrake 6.0
Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 18:32:49 +0100

Hi,
I have mandrake 6.0 runing with a pci 64 sound card and a 32x creative cd
rom drive.
the es1370 seems to be loaded with no error. As far as a know all the sound
file format work fine (.wav , mp3 etc ...)
The problem is that I can't play any audio cd (the drive is reading the cd.
The audio cable is fine, the mixer seems to be correctly set.
I have tried different cd players even x11amp.
an other thing :
When I try to mount an audio cd with
mount /devhdc /mnt/cdrom (without specifying the file system with -t )
I have an error on the file system, is that normal ?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers

Good news my friend,
If you just installed RH 6.0, you don't need to recompile your kernel.
All of these hdwrs. are already supported by your kernel. That's, of
course, not a guarantee that the brands you have are supported,
though.  This may be easier than you thought.  As regards your modem;
if it's a winmodem, you can forget it. It's not gonna happen. If it
isn't, you're probably OK. You have to add the modem as a network
interface device. to do this, go into windows (if you have it) and
find out what com port the modem is on. While you're there find out
all relevant info on IRQ's and I/O addresses for all hardware you want
to use in linux. When you get back in linux, open a shell and type
>netcfg. Not the carrot > just the netcfg. This is obviously the
network config utility. Click the interfaces tab and install the
modem. Hint: Modem on COM 1 in windoze is CUA0 in linux...COM2=CUA1,
etc. When you initialize the modem, you should hear it try to dial (if
you've already installed sound that is) Hint2: don't link CUAx to
/dev/modem ...it's a bit unreliable. How do you get your sound card
working? First track down the docs that came with it. If your lucky,
you won't need it. But linux doesn't like Plug-n-Pray, so be prepared
to know it's recommended IRQ, DMAs (there are two...like 1 and 5), and
I/O addresses. When you have that, open a shell (xterm, konsole, etc.)
and type >sndconfig . This is the sound config tool. It's easy. As
regards the zip disk: goto this directory on your hdd...
/usr/doc/HOWTO/mini and look for the ZIP howto's at the bottom. Also
easy. Last bit of advice. How much is your time worth? Mine's worth
alot, and I've save 10s of hours by buying "Sam's Red Had Linux 6.0
Unleased" from Amazon (no I don't work for either of them). It's under
$40.00 and WELL worth the money. Best of Luck, and keep at
it....Tweak, tweak, tweak all day long...tweak, tweak, tweak while I
sing this song.

Subject: Re:Small Lan-Big problem ->eexpress.c
Date: 15 Sep 1999 16:02:12 GMT

Hi, folks,
Thanks everybody.
Seems, I'm starting to nail down the problem and it looks like
it's not a route problem. (I'm not posting route table and ifconfig,
cause at the moment they look normal, although I tried all you
proposed - all default routes and stuff)
Each time, the packet is supposed to go through eth0,
no matter what program sends it, ping other host or telnet it,
I get a bunch of kernel error messages to the log files
Like this:

KERNEL: i82586 startup timed out, status 0000, resetting...
[...]
KERNEL: i82586 reset timed out, kicking...
[...]
KERNEL: i82586 not responding, giving up.

(With the "Board on fire?" after a while)

After any such attempt ifconfig shows TX packets non-zero and TX errors
too, although a smaller number.

They repeat several times and then, if, say ping still tries to ping through,
repeat all over again.
I was looking for this particular problem in general Ethernet HOWTO, but
they refer me to the eexpress.c listing.
So I go there and see something about whole bunch of problems (not
described exactly) with using EtherExpess 16 on "faster machines" ..
One of the solutions, proposed there is "Get another NIC".
Ok, just fine, I'm not VERY upset by this but before I go and get it
maybe someone knows about any bugfix/newer driver/rough solution,
which might make this EtherExpress 16TP work properly on the celeron box??
Is there anybody here who made it work?

Hello, I don't have a modem in my linux box yet, but from what I've
read, you will probably have the best luck if you can set it in non-pnp
mode. Then set the modem to an available address (COM port) and IRQ
with jumpers, (leave the plug-and-pray stuff for window$).
Hope this helps,

Subject pretty much says it all.

I'm recording audio with this puppy via the line-in port. I have it
working, but I can't get a sample rate above 8032. I want a sample
rate of 44100. When I try to force the sample rate to 44100 I just
get an empty file. I'm using sox to do this.

I think it may be due to me using the incorrect driver (SoundBlaster)
and I need to know what driver to use!

So what sound card is in here?

If it matters, I'm running RH 6.0 - and it's mostly working great
(except for this sample rate problem).

I can pretty much gaurantee it was your motherboard, not the
processor... But I'll leave you alone about it as I don't really have the
energy for a technical explanation. The guy that posted before stating that
you can't use the 100MHz system bus speed with that processor was, in

Aaargh. Go wash your hands. If there is anything else but lynx we need,
it *may* be Opera. IE5 on Linux - complete with rampant Active-X

BTW a K6/2 is an excellent CPU, and I'm going to ditch mine only because

For the nameserver , you need to put in the nameserver/domain name
information in /etc/resolv.conf

If isapnp gives you conflicts, you have to manually edit the
configuration file so that the conflicts go away. Your modem manual
would be able to give you details on the valid IRQ, port address and
so forth

That chip is very well supported, so I suspect you won't have a problem.
There should be an entry in the RedHat hardware list for the 810. If
there isn't, it's a serious oversight.

I have two 810 based cards- DTC 3130B and an ASUS SC-200. Both work
