My motherboard calls for PC100 Unbuffered SDRAM at 100 Mhz. Some
manufactures also list a PC100 with an Eepron. I knew what the
purpose of the Eepron was but forgot. Could someone refresh my

I am a new new newbie, i dont know much about anything, so I'll make
this easy and break it up:
I read in the install guide about IDE and SCSI stuff. PCI cards, etc. I
have a pentium II 350 with 64 megs dimm ram motorola 56k modem
and the cards mentioned below. would i have problems.
I want to know if the following are supported and/or easy to setup.
Ethernet card with cable modem.
ATI xpert AGP 8 Meg 3d accelerator card
rewriteable CD rom
Also, I would like to know your preference, gnome or kde? why?
Would new hardware be autodetected?
you probably answered these stupid questions a million times, i am
sorry if i am a bother. but once i know these things, My friends wont

This post is overly crossposted. Anyway, your problem is not
your window manager or your distribution, it is gnome. The same
window manager (Enlightenment) might be reasonably fast without gnome,
or Window Maker is nice. Older ones like olwm and twm are likely
to be faster yet but not quite as nice (in some opinions).

Hi,
I'm, of course, a newbie. Have a question about formating floppy to
use in Linux. I have my main pc using Windoze and another machine
with RH Linux 6.0 installed. If I format a floppy on the Linux
machine, would I be able to d/l a file on my Windoze machine and put
the file on a Linux floppy? I haven't been able to setup my Linux
machine to use the internet, so I am browsing with my Windoze machine
and d/l files to use in Linux. I would like to get my Linux machine
to connect to the internet so it would be a lot easier to d/l files,
but for now I have to use the Windoze machine. TIA

I have a Sound Blaster Pro ( the real thing ). I can get 8 bit sound,
but some applications always try to play 16 bit sound--very unpleasant.
Is there any way to have the 16 bit sound transparently converted to 8
bit, or get the card to actually play 16 bit sound?
Thanks

Lets try that again ;-)
Hi All,
I am experiencing quite a bit of trouble getting any linux kernel from
the 2.2.x or 2.3.x series to run on my server. The server stats are as
follows:
motherboard: umax UDBX-AS with integrated scsi - (AIC 7880)
ram: 96M
disks 2* seagate ST39140W
The kernel will boot and load happily until it reaches the scsi initialisation
phase. It happily detects the the onboard scsi, but dies part way through
the initialisation phase. Here is an example of what appears on the
console:
...
(scsi0) <Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 12/0
(scsi0) Wide Channel, SCSI ID=7, 16/255 SCBs
scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.2/3.2.4
<Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter>
SCSI: aborting command due to timeout: pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting - trying harder
...
It will continue to do this until the kernel panics.
Now, the frustrating thing is that the machine currently runs redhat 5.2
with 2.0.36 version of the kernel.
Any help would be appreciated
peace
Chris

I don't mean to start a browser flamewar (OK, maybe I do :-) ), but Netscape
does a horrid job of rendering pages, especially under Linux. Pages that
are easily readable with IE under Win9x end up getting rendered with fonts
that are way too small. Bumping the character size up doesn't work too well
as it often screws up the rest of a page's formatting. Netscape under Win9x
doesn't work much better either, from what I've seen on other people's
machines. I also don't like the idea of using anything that's related to
AOHell on my computers, and Netscape definitely falls into that category.
What other browsers are out there, and what are they like? I know about
Lynx (use it in some cron jobs to grab stuff automatically), but what about
browsers that run under X and/or KDE? Netscape is intolerable; it's one of
the reasons my main workstation spends more time in Win98 (where I can run
IE) than in Linux. You mentioned Opera...I've heard mention of it before;
is it any better than Netscape?

Try Window Maker. A version already comes with Redhat 6. To run it instead
of gnome create a file in your home directory called .Xclients
#!/bin/sh
exec wmaker
Then make it executable with chmod +x .Xclients. Install the user specific
Window Maker files with wmaker.inst. Then restart X.
If you want even faster, try IceWM. It isn't as elegant as Window Maker,
though.

Depends.
I like SuSE 6.1 as a desktopper. I would rather use redhat as a server.
I understand Mandrake is an optimized redhat.
What do you want to do with it?
I play and do homework on a SuSE system and do paid work on NT and
Win'98 boxes. I work for someone else of course...

Do you really think the kernel code has errors in it? Well of course it
does. Anything thas size does, but that's not what your problem is.
Upgrading from 2.0.x to 2.2.x requires that a number of programs and
utilities be upgraded, beyond just compiling the kernel.
Try www.redhat.com/corp/support/docs/index.html. They have a little
HOWTO on upgrading Red Hat 5.2 systems to 2.2.x kernels.
By the way it's hard to see how comp.os.linux.hardware is the right home
for this question.

I can tell you what I use-- an Adaptec SlimSCSI APA-1450A. According to
Adaptec this card is only supported under Mickeysoft OS'en, but to my
surprise the Linux PCMCIA drivers recognized it right away. I haven't used
anything other than a Zip and Jaz disk off of it, but they were flawless.
Works good under Windows * if you use that OS too. A much welcome
improvement over the parallel zip I had at the time :-)
Think I bought it at CompUSA, and this particular card has been
discontinued a long time ago. The current Adaptec product should work OK
though.

Which pci Creative soundcard model? If it's the pci512 then you need
drivers, available from the linux page at developer.creative.com. Good
luck. The ones you need are for the SBlive. Check the chipset in the docs
supplied with the card, if it's something like emu10k1 then these drivers
are for it, untar/gzip and read the install docs. Worked for me..... This
will not involve using sndconfig or any other utility, basically just the
install program they come with. You may even have to manually remove any
script entries that sndconfig may have made to load the drivers
successfully however. /ts

what kind of zip drive? ide, parallel, scsi? you will need to
compile some kind of kernel support which depends on the type of drive
interface.

Interesting proposal; the unfortunate thing that I would note is that
the pricing that gets publicized at the site is, um, rather
optimistic.
The "TS795" systems claim to have a base price of $829, which would be
not too bad except for the fact that this excludes such critical
components as:
a) CPU
b) Memory
c) Hard drive
d) CD-ROM.
A minimal system with NIC is priced at about $1300, which is far less
clearly economical...
Incidentally, it would be in Good Taste to note who the actual
manufacturer of the Laptop is, likely from the selection of makers at
<http://www.fringeweb.com/laptops.html> or
<http://www.lyngemark.com/jungle/>. That identification would be
highly helpful in establishing compatibility information...

Thanks for the reply guys, however I am still having a problem. I ran the
update program that comes with the bttv drivers and here is the output:
[root@localhost driver]# ./update
rmmod tuner
rmmod i2c
rmmod videodev
insmod videodev
insmod i2c verbose=1 scan=1 i2c_debug=0
insmod tuner debug=0 type=5
insmod bttv radio=0 card=15
./bttv.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
[root@localhost driver]#
I ran rmmod bttv and it says it is not loaded?
Again I ran xawtv and this is the output:
[root@localhost driver]# xawtv
This is xawtv-2.40, running on Linux/i686 (2.2.5-15)
DGA: version mismatch -- disabled
wmhooks: kde
x11: 1280x1024, 32 bit/pixel, 0 byte/scanline, VidMode
open /dev/video: No such file or directory
can't open /dev/video: No such file or directory
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
open /dev/video: No such file or directory
no video grabber device available
[root@localhost driver]#
What bothers me is that it looking for video in /dev which there is none.
Should there be a link to some other device?
Again thanks in advance

According to what I've read on DejaNews, Gadi Oxman is allegedly working
on it (his name is listed in the Linux kernel source or readme's). I
sent him a mail note to try to confirm this a few months ago but I
received no reply.
The Sony Superstation and its twin brother, the Aiwa Bolt (which is what
I have), are known NOT to work under Linux currently. Using the latest
2.2.x kernel the best you can do is tar a couple megs out to the tape
then it gives an i/o failure.

Brian,
I have RH5.2 that shipped with kernel 2.0.36. I have had no problems
loading the latest kernel sources (2.2.12), compiling, and installing
the kernel.
I recommend:
- Make sure you read any HOWTO's regarding kernel updating and
installation
- Make sure you install all the _development_ and _libraries_ when
installing RH5.2. You will need them to build the kernel.
When you have installed everything you need, the whole process is really
very simple (see the README in the top Linux kernel source directory).
RH5.2 ships with everything you need to build the latest kernel.
Hope this helps.

Maik,
Try contacting the hardware vendor for your computer. Your problem has
nothing to do with Linux.
