Can anyone help me with a recommendation for a motherboard with on

I am a newbie in Linux, wanna try and wondering if my netgear NIC will work
on my Linux box?
Another question is which version of linux will have USB support. I heard
Corel Linux just added the support but mine corel linux (just download and

Pls send reply to my email and I will appreciate that.

IMO, Sony are the best available, though it depends on whether you're
after a trinitron or a shadow mask. If you're after a shadow mask
go with a viewsonic (G773), if you're after a trinitron go with Sony,
and get one of the flat ones. ( I mean "falt" as in as flat as your coffee
table ) If you want a trinitron but can't afford
the sony, get a perfect -lat 17" trinitron from someone else ( for example,
viewsonic )

Hi,
I tried to find information about this modem but without success. I plan
to
buy a modem/fax/voice to use under Linux but do not have information
about this modem. In the shop where I plan to buy they say that "It is
PCI full modem" but still recomend to check if I plan use it for Linux.
Does anybody have it and succesfully use it under Linux? (I could
figure out
it if I had it but if modem will not work I have to return it back into
the shop)
Thanks in advance
Andrey

Is it a 3c90x type card? If so, try the drivers from 3Com rather than
the 3c59x included in the standard kernel source.

Subject: Q: CD-ROM works on install, but not in use RH6.1
Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 21:21:53 GMT
Hi,
I'd like to know if anyone else has had this problem. It's a bit weird
and possibly I need to recompile my Kernel - but with what options?
Problem is that the HD light (front panel) is on continiously and CD-
ROM is not usable. Attempts to mount get continuous ATAPI resets and
{busy} responses. The machine is a 486DX2 and CD rom is on the same IDE
cable as the HD.
CD-ROM is detected and works (more or less) perfectly on install.
However it does say:
Uniform CD-ROM 2.56
ATAPI 32x CD-ROM 128K cache
hdb - disable DSC seek overlay
I think the last message is quite significant. It appears to interleave
the HD and CD access (maybe my IDE itnerface is crappy, but I can't be
bothered buying a new one for a $10 machine).
If I could force the disable of the DSC overlay in normal use, I'm sure
it'd work. But how?
Suggestions welcome,
Bruce

This is a full hardware modem, but since it is an "OEM" version, you will
not receive technical support from 3Com. That's not usually a problem,
unless it needs a flash upgrade.
The 3CP2976-OEM-50 has been tested with Linux and it works. The
installation instructions for that family of modem can be found here:

Which card? Many NetGear cards work, but a model number would be
helpful. Try this:

And don't forget to rate *your* card!

USB is tricky. You would need a development kernel, most likely.

The Voodoo series appears to provide the best price/value ratio:
--> The Matrox cards are _well_-supported for hardware acceleration,
but are rather expensive.
--> The nVidia RIVA-based cards have _some_ hardware acceleration
support, and are economical, _but_... the vendor has been loath to
release anything other than obfuscated code, so it's going to be
tough to support them.
--> ATI's 3D-Rage and successors are reasonably economical, should
_become_ fairly well-supported, but acceleration is Not There Yet,
and they don't seem to be quite as quick.
For primarily 2D graphics, I think I'd bias towards ATI. It's
cheaper, and seems quite good for 2D. If I planned to do some 3D
stuff, I think I'd look at the Voodoo.

Netgear FA310TX, maybehaps? Surely. I've got a couple of them; they
use the "tulip" driver.

You'll need to compile a custom kernel, likely in the "experimental"
series, in order to have USB support.
It's a bit early for _any_ credible producer of distributions to claim
to "have USB support," as the code base is in considerable flux.
Download some "late-breaking" kernel, compile it, and see how that
works for you.
If that seems daunting, then only _realistic_ option is to ... WAIT
FOR KERNEL 2.4 TO BE RELEASED, AND FOR DISTRIBUTIONS TO INTEGRATE
THAT...

I am trying to set up my 14 cd rom drive server to work with linux. I have 2
adaptec (2906 I believe) cards that are detected just fine under Linux
I've tried both Redhat 6.2 and Mandrake 7), and I can see it detect all the
drives upon bootup, but there's a problem. I can only mount 7 of them. It
only lets me mount the ones on the 1st scsi card. However, If I unplug
thedrives from this card, it lets me mount the other7. How do I go about
fixing this problem so I can mount them all? I'd much rather be running

Sit on the couch, watch a lot of TV, keep potato chips and beer close at
hand. Oh, FAT? If you have to wipe Linux completely and put DOS on
there (UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN! YECK!), follow these steps:
1. Find a Lose9x machine
2. insert floppy
3. FORMAT A:
4. SYS A:
5. COPY C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND FDISK.EXE FORMAT.*
6. boot the Linux box from this DOS disk
7. FDISK /MBR
8. FDISK ; delete all partitions, create one or more new DOS partitions...
9. FORMAT C: (FORMAT D: E: F:....)
If you're installing some other OS from CD, it could be even simpler:
1. # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1
2. Set BIOS to boot from CD
3. Insert install CD from other OS; boot.

Do the device nodes for scd[8-14] exist? What does "ls /dev/scd*" show?
If those device files don't exist, then do this:
# for i in 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 ; do
> mknod /dev/scd$i b 11 $i
> done
It seems that RedHat ships with only 8 of the device nodes there.
If that's not the problem, make sure the cards aren't confilcting with
each other in some way--trying to share IRQs or I/O ranges will probably
confuse them...

ftp://ftp.tyan.com/manuals/S1836/1836_230.pdf
and
http://www.tyan.com/products/html/s1834.html
ought to give some reasonably detailed data to compare.
In a nutshell though:
1836 1834
Chipset: BX or GX chipset VIA Apollo Pro 133 chipset
RAM: 2Gb for GX, 1Gb for BX 1.5Gb PC133, 2Gb PC100
SCSI: on-board AIC-7895 n/a
Sound: option: on-board Vibra n/a
Ethernet: option: Intel 82558 10/100 n/a
And obviously the maximum processor speed you can use on 133 vs 100MHz
buses...
There's some minor stuff to do with not being able to use some really
early
PII processors in the 1834 mentioned on the web page, but I don't think
that's really an issue for most people :-)
There have been a few versions of the 1836.
Firstly, there's the matter of the BX or TX versions.
Then, there were the ones with sound and ethernet on board - and those
without.
Mark.

This may be silly, but do you have all 14 devices in /dev ? What
happens if you unplug 5 drives from the first card, do you get the 2
from it and then 5 more from the other card, or is this an "all or
nothing" problem?

The hardware list is often a bit cryptic or out of date.

If it's the same ones I've been looking at, they are at www.webgear.com.

What sort of power supply do you have?? I found out the hard way that
you really need at least a 300W power supply in a dual processor system.

Who would have experience getting Linux configured for this older server box
(P90). Has RAID 5 on Mylex....
Experience and notes appreciated.

Sure there is. Try:
/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom auto user,exec,dev,suid,ro,noauto 0 0
> Depending upon which one I want to mount, I just enter "mount

"auto" tells mount to autodetect the filesystem that happens to be on your
cd at the moment. So you only need "mount /mnt/cdrom".
