Try setting "plug n play=no" in the bios setting.

I had similar problems with an AMD K6-2 450 and AGP-video
system I used briefly a few months ago. It worked ok in
text mode, but with the RH6.1-installed X driver, took
minutes to bring up Gnome and KDE screens. It ran
fast with generic low-end X drivers like XF86_VGA16.
I think if you get the right X driver, or can live with
a generic driver, you should be ok.

I know another person said to get rid of the logging -
but you should instead get rid of the problem that's
causing the logging. Or, if it's informational
logging instead of error-logging, (a) change /etc/syslog.conf
to cut out logging to console. (See man syslog.conf)
or (b) recompile the USB code with a lower debug level
or (c) in the bios, enable legacy emulation for usb kbd
and mouse, so linux can treat them like old-style hw,
until USB code is more stable.

The i810 card uses the svga server. I think rhat 6.2 has XFree86 3.3.6,
so you *might* have i810 support compiled into the svga server. If so,
you need to install the agpgart.o module first. Try 'locate agpgart'
and to make sure you have the module. If you have it, do '/sbin/insmod
agpgart' before starting X (making sure you have set up the svga server
using xf86config or Xconfigurator or making a link yourself).
Follow instruction #6 at:
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel810/release_notes_1.htm
If that doesn't work, you'll have to download the drivers at:
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel810/linuxsoftware.htm
and follow all of the instructions from the previous link.

Subject: NIC NIC
Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 13:38:04 -0400
Hi,
I am still trying to solve my PROBLEM, which is driving me ballistic.
Facts:
1. I have installed RH 6.1 server. No problem.
2. I want to configure it as a firewall (Cablemodem --> home LAN). I've
seen plenty of docs, shouldn't be a problem.
3. Problem (but wait...): I can't get myIP from the Cable ISP (DHCP
server). That's a standard problem, I know.
Specifics (HW):
1. eth0 is an ALN-101 (PnP which I have to setup manually, for the time
being, with isapnp, modprobe). I can do that, it works.
2. eth1 is a Novel NE2000. I can configure it manually to 192.168.1.1.
it works.
Specifics (setup):
NO Problem: with eth0 ALONE in the box, everything works fine. I can
connect to the Net via dhcp. (I tried both pump and dhcpcd in the ifup
script). I tried to watch the data stream with tcpdump, and it looks
fine.
BIG problem:
1. with _both_ NICs physically present, neither pump, nor dhcpcd returns
the IP from the DHCP server (ISP). I can see (modem lights, and tcpdump)
the request going out to the cable: looks fine. Then the receive light
flashes back briefly, but tcpdump receives nothing, and... you guessed
it I get no IP (and no satisfaction!)
2. I tried all the tricks suggested in various discussion groups and in
the Bug reports for pump. (turn off/reset the modem, change
pump<->dhcpcd, newer versions,...), What else ?
OTHER:
with the same box (same NICs, different SCSI-HD) running NT 3.51 with
both NICs in, I can connect to the Net, no problem. Hence, I do NOT have
a hardware interference between the NICs. (right?)
Conclusions:
1. Since I can setup the Linux box with 1 NIC, I have no DHCP protocol
problem with my ISP (right?)
2. Since the Linux box recognizes both eth0 and eth1 (albeit manually,
at this point) as confirmed by ifconfig -a, I have no driver problem,
i.e. ne.o works OK as defined by my aliases in /etc/conf.modules
(right?)
My shortcomings:
1. I don't know how to get more info on the pump/dhcpcd failures, in the
2 NICs situation. Can you suggest ways to debug the access to the NIC ?
of the pump/dhcpcd modules ? of whatever else comes into play at that
time ?
2. It really looks like something is preventing the response from the
DHCP server to get through eth0 when eth1 is physically present in the
box. what ? why ?
3. This does not seem to be neither an Ether, nor a dhcp problem; or
it's both; or it's...
4. frankly I am not that surefooted at this low-level stuff in Linux.
But some pointers to some good tools and docs (incl. dumb and dumber)
would be welcome. I don't expect YOU to fix my problem; but that
d/f...d/g box is too heavy for me to throw out the window!
Any suggestion ?
TIA
Julie

I'm looking to get a new Inspiron and would like some opinions:
Which is easier to useon the eyes, the 1400x1050 15" screen or the
1280x1024 15.4" screen? Since my external monitor (NEC 6FG) may not
handle the 1400x1050 mode, I'd probably run it in 1280x1024 mode.
Does the Xircom 10/100 Modem/Lan card work properly?
Besides more disk and the 15.4" screen, are there any other
differences between the 5000 and the 7500.
Any problems with SpeedStep?

If it is a external scsi CDROM, you are ready to go.
If it is a external parallel CDROM, take a look at the Zip Disk HOW TO in
the support section of www.linux.org to give you some insight in installing
a parallel device.

If you really are using a single twisted pair between 2 10baseT nics it's a
wonder that you're getting any transfer at all. 10baseT requires 2 twisted pairs
for connectivity.
Also, since you're connecting directly between machines, you have to make sure
you're using a true crossover RJ45 set:
1----->3
2----->6
3----->1
6----->2

Yes it's a geniune tulip. I'll get the latest David Becker drivers, I'm

may have the same problem.

I had the same problem on a 6300 with a 2.2.12 kernel, going to a 2.2.15
solved the problem, I didn't look to see if it was changes in the

the 6300.

If with samba then my reccomendation is to set it up as a "plain" printer
and use the printer drivers on the client.
If it is local then you need to start investigating input filters and

Thank you for contacting 3Com Online Support.
According to the information you have provided, your modem is an OEM

the 1400x1050 screen is fabulous... this is the reason i bought my unit
(a 7500; but you may want the newer 5000 with this screen?)

why buy a Xircom when you can get the Linksys for $150 street? (and you'll
still be able to use your other slot)...

5000 is thinner and lighter by three pounds... 7500 is going to be phased
out (according to rumour, Compal no longer makes the chassis)...
7500 can use three 25GB drives for 75GB on-line... you can also get a CDRW
unit for the internal bay... (not sure is this option is available for the
5000)

If I worked for Lexmark I'd take offense at this comment. It's true
that the consumer Lexmark printers are intended for the Windows market, but
the same can be said for HP, Epson and Canon. On the other hand, the Optra
series, given their on-board PCL and PS processors, are OS-agnostic. Their
Markvision print management software runs on a slew of Unix and Linux
platforms, not just Windows.
