0. Get an RJ-45 crossover cable, available in most computer stores for $6
or so. Plug it in to both NICs.
1. Set the network settings in Lose98. Assign it IP address
192.168.1.1, netmask 255.255.255.0. Reboot :-)
2. On the Linux machine, "ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255 up"
3. See if the machines can ping each other. ("ping 192.168.1.X" from a
DOS box or the command line)
4. If that worked, and you have the telnet and/or FTP services enabled on
your LInux box, you can telnet and FTP from the Lose98 box into the Linux
box.
5. Read the Samba documentation for doing more interesting things like
sharing files between the 2 computers pretty transparently. The steps
required are beyond the scope of this Usenet message, but relatively
simple. http://www.samba.org/docs/

External modems are 99.5% safe. I use Hayes Accura 56K without
problems and a USR sportster ? the black one.
Personally I stick to modems that will at least work with DOS though
others here have reported getting winmodems to work

Hi. I can login as root just fine, but not user. The screen looks
like it's about to start, turns blue, turns black, but then it just
defaults back to KDM.
I tried adding another user under a different name in root, but
I can't login under that one either. What would cause this? It
worked fine but started this after installing Nessus. I'm running
Debian potato.

Hi !
I've got a windows-based 17Giga HD and a second Linux 6.4Giga one.
Is it true that LILO ain't capable of dealing with big HDs ?
Do I must buy some dual boot software like Docsboot+ or System Commander ?
thx !

No. LILO is capable of booting Linux and WinXX so long as the important
system files (kernel image+loading map for Linux) are within the first 8G
of the hard drive. The latest version of LILO is capable of booting a
system no matter where the kernel image lies. Linux kernels prior to
2.2.14 had some problems handling HDs larger than 30.5 G, but that's been
fixed now AFAIK. You should have no problems.

Your video card has the rage 128 chipset and you need XFree86 3.3.6 or 4.0 you
can probably download it from Red Hat , Suse has their own driver for that card
that you could use , or you could install Red Hat 6.2 or Mandrake 7.0 .

With the dawn of the 40 GB drives I am looking at building a mass
storage file server. I am fairly confident that 4 - 40 GB drives
could fit... but now that some boards have extra plugs for ATA66. Is
it possible to use all 4 and have 8 - 40 GB disks? This would
certainly yield quite a bit of disk spaces.... Has anyone tried more
than 4 IDE disks? What was your success?

Anybody who's ever touched the bottom of an over-heated drive, or had drive
componants fuse together?
I believe I've even seen some provisos in drive warranties that mandate the
use of sufficient cooling mechanisms. Your case just might have good enough
airflow, and your operating environment is likely cool enough.
Or, you could just have cool-running drives.

Has anyone successfully formatted a 5.25" double-density 360K
floppy diskette on a high-density 1.2 Meg floppy drive under
Linux, specifically RedHat 6.0? Or any version of Linux?
I use the command:
fdformat /dev/fd0d360
and get the following:
[csul@localhost csul]$ fdformat /dev/fd0d360
Double-sided, 40 tracks, 9 sec/track. Total capacity 360 kB.
Formatting ... done
Verifying ... end_request: I/O error, dev 02:04 (floppy), sector 0
Read: : Input/output error
Problem reading cylinder 0, expected 9216, read -1
[csul@localhost csul]$ end_request: I/O error, dev 02:04 (floppy), sector
2
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:04 (floppy), sector 4
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:04 (floppy), sector 6
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:04 (floppy), sector 9
<etc>
I don't have this problem when formatting a high-density 1.2 Meg
floppy under Linux, and Win 98 will format either 360K or 1.2 Meg
without a problem. I've also tried a different floppy drive
with the same results. (Both are Teac drives; one is about 10 years
old and the other is new.)
Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? Or is this a
bug?

Login as root and run sndconfig from the command line. This should
configure sound card settings in modules.conf and afterwards, play a sample
audio clip of Lunus Torvalds pronunciation of "Linux". Afterwards login as
a normal user and start X (startx). Go into the GNOME configuarion tool
(looks like a tool box on your launcher panel) and check under Multimedia
- Sound. Make sure the following items are selected:
1. Enable sound server startup
2. Sounds for events.
Log out of X and then back into it again. Once this is done you should
have default X event sounds working. You can change the X event sounds
with the GNOME configuration tool.

Oh, I wanted to say more. Other than stating my opinion that you are a fucking
idiot.
Duh. Of course I assumed the software killed my machine.
Hardware has become very stable, while software has become more and more
bug-prone. At least with open source stuff, the code is available for
everybody to pore over. The same cannot be said for commercial software.

This is a very interesting essay on the direction that commercial software has
taken.
Anyway, it turns out I was wrong. It was a dirty IDE cable connector. But I
stick to my guns. A crash, and subsequent corruption of hard disk data (or any
other sort of problem) is more likely to be attributed to software, than to the
hardware itself.

Redhat 6.2 - 2.2.14 kernel. And actually, I had tried sndconfig originally, but not
this time. I'm going to be out of touch until Wednesday, but I'll try out your and
Paul's suggestions while I'm on the road and let you know what happened when I get
back.
By the way, the XG18's sound card is a NeoMagic 256XL+ - the chip actually acts as
both a video and a sound card. The driver documentation suggests that the sound
implementation actually uses the high end of the video memory as a sound buffer,
interestingly enough, but
I digress. I've seen some evidence that it contains a Yamaha mixer chip or some such.
That or some subset of its chipset is compatible with such. Your XG19 should have
the same chipset, I believe. You have that machine configured as if it had a SB?
Anyway, there is a Linux driver for the NM256AV and NM256ZX chips which were in some
of the F-series Vaios and I think maybe some others (the slims?) that's been included
in the kernel since 2.2.13 or so but that's the driver that's been giving me the
device or resource
busy messages.
