I can't remember where I read it, but running either TurboPNPcfg or
TurboSoundcfg overwrites the /etc/conf.modules file. Before you ran
these you probably had a line that looked like...
alias eth0 <module_for_your_card>
...but now it's gone. I got burned by this one too. This was a known
bug, but I don't know if it's fixed yet. Once you get your NIC back (I
am such a newbie, I had to do a re-install), you should probably back
up the /etc/conf.modules file before you set up your sound card and
then you can copy the NIC lines back in once you have the sound working.

I need help getting my 3Com USR modem working. I am using winlinux 2000 but
will be switching to Corel Linux when I get the CD in the mail. I have tried
using all of the serial ports in the Dial up but when I query the modem I
either get a "modem is busy" or it says it's querying the modem but I get no
results, sending AT to the modem returns nothing, but it says it's working.
ANy help would be great.

Nope. External devices can be exactly the same or better than external
ones. The location of the device doesn't matter. What matters is how
good the device is and how you interface to that device.

And that's a bad thing? As long as it performs to specs, having a
configurable system is far preferrable to a non-configurable
hardware-only solution. Read up on Transmeta and ask Linus why he
decided to work there. In general, software provides configurability
and hardware provides performance. Mix the two and you have a great
product--maybe not the highest performing product, but a great product.
I'm not saying that win-devices are good. I'm saying that software (or
firmware, as we like to call it) plays an important role for both the
consumer and the manufacturer in add-on devices. Unfortunately, the
market driver for host-based peripherals seems to be low cost rather
than performance and configurability.

i810-based motherboards work for sound & X. Unfortunately, the X driver
is only 2D at this time. I think the i810 supports on-board lan, but
mine doesn't have it. It has usb, but since I don't have any usb
peripherals, I can't test it.

I purchased Corel Linux Deluxe to install on my current system so that I
can have dual boot between Win 98 and Linux, however when I try to install
Linux, it goes to the screen prior to the license agreement and then it
spits out the CD and reboots the computer automatically. Does anybody
know why it is doing this? In my computer system it seems to have no
problems with the setup. I think it might be hardware imcompatibility,
does anybody else have a suggestion?

I have a logitech serial mouse connected to COM1. The IRQ of COM1 is 4.
I also have a 16 bits AWE32 soundblaster. In windows the soundblaster is
using IRQ 5. When i installed corel Linux my mouse wasn't being detected.
But i rebooted the system some times, and with the help of some black magic
i get the mouse working. After that i installed the soundblaster. It was
installed in IRQ 5. But after the installation of the soundblaster my mouse
wasn't working again.
Can anyone tell what can i do to get the mouse working.

As long as your BIOS has the post-1998 EDD packet calls for int 0x13,
LILO 21.4 can handle drives up to 2Tb. The source code is at:
ftp://sd.dynhost.com/pub/linux/lilo
or
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo
I have a system with 2x27Gb + 1x17Gb Maxtor drives, and a 1999
motherboard. I use this version of LILO to boot Win2000, RH 6.0, and
RH 6.1.

Stimmt, beim Erstkauf mu man mit 120,-DM rechnen, die Updates bringen
wirklich Verbesserungen

Gene,
It turns out that using fd0h360 (as suggested by David C) instead
of fd0d360 works, and if I then use:
mkfs -t msdos /dev/fd0h360
I get a diskette which is compatible with DOS/Win 98.
What you've dscribed out would have merit were it not for the fact
that the usual 1.2 Meg drives are designed to at least read 360K
double density floppies, and I was able to successfully format one
under DOS/Win 98 (dual boot on the same box). The drives change
speed and data rate depending on the density.
What is undoubtedly true is that this diskette will be unreadable in a
standard 360K double density drive with its wider heads. I think
my 10 year-old drive, a Teac FD55GFR-142, had some sort of dual heads
which allowed writing either wide or narrow tracks, but I can't
find the specs for it on Teac's website. (I'm pretty sure I used
360K floppies to move files back and forth between one of the antiques
I used to play with and the PC with the Teac -142.) The specs for the
new one, FD55GFR-7193, don't mention this. I trashed my last antique
with a double density 5.25" drive about 5 years ago so can't check
it out.
I appreciate your taking the time to respond.

I don't know about the USB , I have a ABIT dual cel board. Copy
/usr/src/linux/System.map to /boot. Make make modules and make
modules_install. If you are brave move the /lib/modules/??? to
/lib/modules/???-old and then do the make modules and make
modules_install.
My two pence worth

AFAICT, the Presario 1247 is virtually identical to the 1200-XL106 that I
own, except that the 1247's hard disk is a bit smaller and the screen is
physically a bit smaller (although both are 800x600). I've got a web page
up about my 1200-XL106, including my XF86Config file and information on
getting sound working. (In a nutshell: Use the 0.5.6 or later ALSA
drivers.) It's at:

Subject: Pcmcia problems.

Hi, I have installed both Redhat 6.1, 6.2 and Slackware 7 to my portable
Compaq Armada 7730 MT ( 166mmx, 2 gb disk, 32mb ram, s3 Aurora adapter,
ess 1878, 3com 589 pcmcia nic), but pcmcia hangs my entire computer on
all of my installations. Here's the error message i got when i boot
Slackware 7:
Starting PCMCIA services: Linux PCMCIA Card Services 3.0.14
kernel build 2.2.13 #22 [snip dato oktober 99]
options: [pci] [cardbus]
<Probing for PCIC: edit /etc/rc.d/rc.pcmcia>
Intel PCIC probe:
TI 1131 PCI-to-Cardbus at bus 0 slot 12, mem 0x7fffe000, 2 sockets
host opts [0]: [pci + serial irq] [no pci irq] [] at 66/176] [bus
1/1]
host opts [1]: [pci + serial irq] [no pci irq] [] at 66/176] [bus
2/2]
Even if I remove my Nic, I got the same error.
The computer works fine in both win98 and NT, but thats not what I want
to use :-(.
Greetings

You might be better off posting this to comp.unix.solaris. We talk Linux here.

I see there is a beta XFree86 4 available. Has anyone tried it with a TNT2
and Quake3? What was the performance compared to Win9X or NT4/Win2K?
