You need 16-bit sound for mp3 and realplay. Unfortunately, I have no idea how
to setup your sound chip.

Which chipsets have full 3D support in Linux ?

I don't want to buy a board which gives 3D performance in Windows but only
2D in Linux.

Win, Hsp, or Soft modem are not that bad. I have been using one lately because I
am having problems with hardware modems. I can call from a TI modem (ISA
hardware) to an USR modem (External), but not the reverse. A soft modem (PCI
HSP) works both ways with an USR modem. Performances are similiar in either
cases.

The problem seems to be that the TI modem reports connection with V42bis, but
neither modems support it. Namely at%C? does not work for both. Any idea?

The i2c modules typically come with the bttv driver when it is
distributed separately. Now, if you are running a linux distro
with the 2.2 kernel, the i2c module along with the rest of the
bttv stuff should have been precompiled for you.

[deletia]

This sort of situation should only come up if you have built
        your own kernel...

It depends on the kernel version. With newer kernels/distros,
you can just fiddle with what modules you load and get one
IDE device being emulated as SCSI while another isn't.

These are my relevant module options:

        modprobe ide-cd ignore=hdd
        modprobe ide-scsi

hdd is an IDE scsi burner.
hdc is a pioneer 10x DVD.

Corel Linux only supports and installs on hardware with a compatibile video
card and monitor. Otherwise you are out of luck. You can grab Debian off the
Net and install. Corel would not install on my Compaq Presario 3555 desktop
but installed flawlessly on my Toshiba 460CDT notebook. BYW, Corel may be
going bankrupt according to their latest press release if the Borland/Inprise
merger does not go through so choose your Linux distro carefully. Fortunately,
CL is based on Debian Linux so you can always update your CL system if Corel
visits the graveyard.

It's a multi-function device, with a bubblejet printer inside. The tech support
