Subject: error when mounting cdrom

Hi!
I have a Sonny CDU311 ATAPI cdrom-drive, when I mount it with "mount
/mnt/cdrom" I get the following error:

Apr 25 15:37:22 localhost kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51

When I mount it with "mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom" I get the
following error:

I know this probably means there is something wrong with the drive, but
I was wondering if someone could explain a bit more detailed what the
messages actually mean?

Thanks

This is really quite peculiar. Any binary version of kernel 2.2.14
should come with all the associated modules including the i2c ones.
Are you sure you installed the modules? You really shouldn't need to
        rebuild the source yourself.

Actually, running "modprobe bttv" should load the i2c modules
automagically for you. modprobe loads a module (like insmod)
along with all the 'dependency' modules.

I've been running a Hauppauge WinTV 401 for about a year and a half
now... but under Bughat. Under 6.x it was sufficient to merely load
bttv and tuner via modprobe. For Bughat 5.x I just got the bttv driver
source distriution from Metzler's homepage and installed that...

HP LaserJet 3150 Users... Can You Print Landscape???
&
Try it...
&
OK, neither can I - and neither can a whole lot of other users either.
So far I've identified several here in Usenet, but I'm sure there are
many, many more.
&
I'm attempting to identify as many people as possible with this problem,
so we can approach HP as a group and hopefully get them of their asses and
give us an appropriate firmware revision.
&
The workaround they currently recommend is completely unacceptable, since
it requires you to lower your video graphics acceleration significantly.
This degrades the video capabilities of your entire machine!
&
I don't think so...
&
Please write me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you are having
this problem so we can approach HP as a group and hopefully motivate/shame
them into fixing this.

I hope to heard from you.

"make dep" is but the first of many steps needed to compile, install and
boot to a new kernel.

Because you haven't compiled, installed or booted to the new kernel.

Read the Kernel HOWTO, normally located at /usr/doc/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.

Btw, I prefer "make menuconfig" as opposed to config and even xconfig.

Hi all,

I wake up to a horrific reality that some computer manufacturers may be
trying to suppress and uproot Linux and all other free Operating
Systems. How? They make computers that do not read nor write those free
OS bootdisks in drive A. It is a very bad trick upon us free OS users.
We must wake up and get together to fight this war.

I bought a Compaq Presario 5834 two weeks ago. I bought this computer
with Linux in mind. But after days of trying and calling support service
reps, I'm left stranded with a computer not at all of any use to me. At
this moment, I don't know how widespread this phenomenon is. But I urge
everybody who loves these free OS and free softeware in general do a bit
investigation to monitor this somputer industry's new move.

I suspect that this kind of restriction of Linux and other free OSes are
implemented through BIOS and/or Hardware, therefore it could defeat the
Free Software Movement if we don't get together to fight it. Or are we
ready to devise FREE BIOS and FREE OS COMPATIBLE HARDWARE???

This may be an over reaction. But it does pose the threatening
potential.

[snippage]

How on earth do you think they get Non-Free OSes installed? (Hint: It
has to do with a bootable CD.) Besides, I think companies would get an
immense amount of flak if machines couldn't boot from a floppy drive.
Just think, there are a few things in Win9x that require booting from a
DOS floppy. (FDISK.EXE for one.) Not to mention that flashing the BIOS
or performing rescue operations on a severely f***ed system or even using
Ghost to re-image an NT machine that's gone FUBAR all require booting from
a floppy--often a standard DOS floppy!

The only way that manufacturers could make installing a Free OS impossible
if the machine's BIOS looked on the floppy or CD-ROM drive for an Official
Signature when it attempted to boot from something other than the HD.
This would be possible, but expensive for BIOS manufacturers--too
expensive when you consider the other factors and the negative consumer
reaction that would ensue.

Threats to the free OS movement are there, but they come from other
directions. I'd be more worried about non-standard non-documented file
formats that change every 18 months (*COUGH* .doc .xls *COUGH*) than
hardware pieces at the moment, IMHO.

If we're to interpret this as more than simply a rant, you'll need to
post in more specific terms what you tried and what went wrong.

Here's one thing to try - booting a Linux CD.

> I bought a Compaq Presario 5834 two weeks ago. I bought this computer
> with Linux in mind.

Honestly, if you're buying a computer for Linux, why the heck get a
Presario other than wanting a challenge? Just one look at the things
should give a Linux user the screaming heebie jeebies.

If you're getting a system for Linux, your best bet is to buy a system
that someone's built for Linux from one of the online Linux-savvy
vendors, or build your own system using components that are known to
work with Linux.

Having said that, I've retrofitted two older Presarios to run Linux.
However, when buying a new system for Linux, current Presarios weren't
even under consideration. :)

root can write to anywhere that exists and has room,
so see if /root/.netscape/cache/ exists, and use df
or df /root to see if space is free. Of course, once
you solve the problem you should stop running netscape
as root. Maybe sooner. :)

Re the font questions, see frequent threads in
netscape.communicator.unix (use news server
secnews.netscape.com if you don't have it locally).
I have the lines below in my .Xdefaults to control
menu fonts. Note, substitute whatever fonts you
like in place of these.

Netscape*toolBar.myshopping.isEnabled: false

Netscape*fontList:-b&h-lucida-bold-r-normal-sans-14-100-100-100-p-90-iso8859-1,-

8859-1,-b&h-lucida-bold-i-normal-sans-17-120-100-100-p-108-iso8859-1=BOLD,-b&h-l
ucida-bold-i-normal-sans-17-120-100-100-p-108-iso8859-1=ITALIC

Netscape*banner*fontList:lucidasanstypewriter-12,lucidasanstypewriter-bold-12=BO
LD,lucidasans-italic-12=ITALIC

Also, in preferences/appearance/fonts I
have "use my default fonts" checked.
Even so, lots of docs show up in what
looks like 10-pt instead of my defaults
(24-pt) so I frequently use ctrl-alt-plus
or minus to switch from 1280x1024 to 640x480.

As has been reported in this group, the Lexmark Optra series supports
postscript in hardware. Evidently the new model (Optra 45) just came out, and
Lexmark has dumped all of the old model 40's (which use the same ink as the 45)
in the clearance channels. I must say I really though the print quality was
high, particularly the text. They also put in the high capacity ink in the
printer (which is about the cost of the printer at clearance prices). I was
able to buy the printer for $84, and when I checked tonight (Saturday), they
still had 44 left at:

        http://www.us.buy.com/clearance/dept.asp?deptID=70203

(there were also sightings at egghead's clearance site). Note, you will need
to put in an additional SIMM of memory to bring the memory up from 4 megabytes
(I currently have an 8 meg chip in it for a total of 12 meg, and will probably
swap it for a 16 meg chip when I retire my old PowerPC that is my pond
association's web server).
