Some obvious things: Did you run depmod after installing the modules?
If not, run "depmod -a" from the base of your current kernel's module
directory. Second, are the modules somewhere other than where modprobe
expects them?
You might try using insmod, and see if that has any more luck.

Ahh yes, nothing like a Presario to make you give up hope.
Some of them, maybe all, I dont know, have the BIOS configuration
utility on a partition on the first fixed disk. On the last one
I used, it was the first 8MB, and on an unknown file system.
The only way I found to install the thing was via the quik fix
disk, which also installed Win95, no questions asked.

Subject: Have new parallel port - but it's PCI!!
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 18:35:25 +1000
Hi,
(Firstly, sorry if this message shows up twice: my ISP's news server is
playing up)
I have just installed a new parallel port into my PC, but am having
trouble configuring it. The fact that's it's PCI doesn't help matters, I
think, but anyway:
This is the output from lspci:
00:0e.0 Class 0783: Syba Tech Ltd Multi-IO Card (rev 92) (prog-if 15)
Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster- SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop-
ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
Status: Cap- 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort-
<TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR-
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 9
Region 0: I/O ports at f800
I have tried to configure this port as LPT2 by setting the IRQ to 9 and
the IO to 0x278 in modules.conf. I then loaded the parport driver and
got this:
/proc/parport/1/autoprobe:
MODEL:Unknown device;
MANUFACTURER:Unknown vendor;
/proc/parport/1/devices:
/proc/parport/1/hardware:
base: 0x278
irq: 9
dma: none
modes: SPP,PS2
/proc/parport/1/irq:
9
This seemed OK, but I then plugged my Zip100 drive into the port
(shutdown first, of course) and got "zip" !! I also saw the following
lines in /var/log/kernel:
Apr 29 23:39:23 WellHouse kernel: 0x278: CTR: wrote 0x0c, read 0xff
Apr 29 23:39:23 WellHouse kernel: 0x278: DATA: wrote 0xaa, read 0xff
which come from this piece of code in parport_pc.c:
if (user_specified)
/* That didn't work, but the user thinks there's a
* port here. */
printk (KERN_DEBUG "0x%lx: CTR: wrote 0x%02x, read 0x%02x\n",
pb->base, w, r);
So does this mean that my spiffy PCI card requires some kind of manual
configuration so that it knows which port to use? And presumably
something similar to switch it between SPP, ECP and EEP? Well, I was
kind of expecting the latter...
It looks like I'm going to have to modify the parport driver to do
this... unless "setpci" can come to my rescue??? (somehow???)
I have tried using 0xf800 as the parallel port address too, to no avail.
Can anyone give me a jump-start here, please?
Cheers,
Chris.
PS: The card, port and ZIP drive work fine under That Other OS. There is
also a 68K VB tool which does some manual configuration. Does anyone
know of a good disassembler for Linux so that I can pull this thing
apart, if necessary?

Hi,
In my opinion the dual Celeron solution will be the better one because i
heard of some problems when using an Athlon (not sure, though). Second it
would be better for scalability if you plan to enhance your server e.g. with
an Application Server or so, for most of them are supporting
multiprocessing.
I think the RAM should be enough for a while. We are currently working on a
similar configuration but additionally with an App-Server which manages
loads of Java-Apps and currently have installed 256 Megs. We also ask
ourselves if it would be better to upgrade to 512 Megs. So if you get some
tips or make any experiences it would be nice to get mail from you (my
e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]).
Now to the RAID-question: I think RAID 5 would be great for a performance
boost if you are going to expect very much hits for your sites. I never had
to deal with RAID-things, so this is only my opinion. Better you gather more
info about that.
Hope this will help you a little!
Final question: How about security? Do you know a good Site describing how
to secure a Apache-Linux based Webserver environment?
ciao,
marcus

Subject: Newbie: Pls advise installing Dual boot Dual HD Mandrake 7
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 12:26:24 GMT
Hi,
I'm new to Linux, just got Mandrake 7 distro. Haven't installed yet as
I'm waiting for a new IDE 17G HD (should arrive tomorrow) which I'll
connect as Secondary Master (4G Primary Master IDE HD has Win98,
Primary Slave is my CDROM drive).
My PC is a 64 MB AMD K-6 II 350.
I plan a dual Sys/ dual HD with LILO and plan using the first 6G of my
new HD for Linux and the rest of it for Win98.
Please advise regarding:
1. Should I format/partition my new HD before installing Linux
(using what fdisk?) or can I just proceed with my "virgin" HD?
2. Should I install Linux (recommended Mandrake Mode) first and
partition/format the rest (of the HD) under Win98 later (as Windows
does not recognize Linux partitions will it not "run-over" my Linux
partition)? Or shall I partition Win BEFORE installing Windows?
3. Assuming I'll use Mandrake's (graphical) DrakX, does it
recognize TWO HDs and will it enable me (under Recommended mode) to
pick which HD/partition to use for Linux and its swap?
TIA

Subject: NetGear FA410TX PCMCIA Card
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 13:37:38 +0100
Hi;
I've been trying to get a NetGear FA410TX PCMCIA network card up and running
in my laptop. It's running Red Hat 5.2, with kernel 2.2.9, and the latest
PCMCIA software (3.1.14, I think). It identifies the card fine, using
pcnet_cs as an NE2000 compatible, gets the hardware address and assigns IO
and memory resources to it. I can bring up the eth0 device, but I cannot
send or receive any data - when I try to ping something from my laptop, I
get the following appearing in the out put of demsg :-
eth0: Tx timed out, cable problem ? TSR=0x42, ISR=0x0, t=1000
I know that there is no problem with the cable, since the exact same
physical setup works just fine in Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a on the
same laptop, a Viglen Dossier M.
Does anybody have any ideas about what might be causing this rather strange
problem in Linux ? In case it was because there was some issue with Red Hat
5.2, I tried the Slackware 7.0 and Red Hat 6.2 boot discs - they had the
exact same problem. They could recognise the card and bring up eth0, but
could not send or receive any data.
Any help at all would be very much appreciated.
Thank you;

Well this is the deal I would like to add a PROMISE Ultra66 card because
my onboard ide is full with 2 hard Drives, cd-rom, and a cd-rw. So I
was thinking the first place to go would be the UltraDMA How-To. The
how to helped a lot but now I need to patch my kernel with the files
found at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/ but
every time I do this it give me
[root@localhost src]# cat ide.2.2.15-19.20000420.patch | patch -p0
can't find file to patch at input line 4
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:

I think I also have to add the hdparm-3.9a.patch.gz and
util-linux-2.10h-fdisk but where is the header file and where is fdisk
so I can recompile.
Well if you have any Ideas.

It might be easier just to get a newer kernel.
I'm using Promise with the 2.3.4 kernel.
Just do make xconfig while in X and
select all the Promise and udma options.
Make sure at the top you select that you
want to be prompted for developmental
and experimental drivers, or you won't
see the Promise stuff.
I also selected all the stuff that said
"boot off-board eide chips first"
and "use dma by default when avail"
and "use udma" etc..
It's working for about a month so far with
fsck not reporting anything funky.
