Subject: Nvidia drivers for XF86 4.0 won't compile. Help!
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 14:36:35 GMT
Well, I wrestled with the installation of XFree86
4.0 and I finally beat it, but the Nvidia drivers
have kicked my butt and now I humbly bow to the
USENET gods for assistance!
I have the following:
PII-350
96MB SDRAM
Creative Graphics Blaster TNT
Dell M770 Monitor (but not a Dell system)
Aureal Vortex 1 Soundcard
I have installed every library off of my Mandrake
7.0 CD that I could possibly imagine the new
Nvidia driver needing and then some. The
installation instructions very plainly state that
to install, you simply go into the build directory
as root and type 'make'. Well, all look find and
dandy for say... 2 seconds? Then I get a flood of
errors and the whole thing exits without
compiling. I'm installing from the tarballs, I
tried the RPM and it failed as well.
I tried to get it to dump the entire error message
to a text file so I could attach it to this post,
but am not sure how, or if I can, but here is a
description:
I have approx. 1000 lines that consist of the
following types of errors:
/usr/include/linux/efs)fs_i.h:43: parse error
before 'di_uid'
warning: data definition has no type or storage
class
or
/usr/include/linux/coda.h:219 dereferencing
pointer to incomplete type
or
warning: control reaches end of non-void funtion
Other types of errors are too numerous, but
hopefully this rings a bell with someone.
Almost all of these errors are in reference to
various header files in the /usr/include/linux
subdirectory, or they involve nv.o.
The final line of the error is as follows:
make: *** [nv.o] Error 1
I'm at the end of my rope on this one and am about
to say, "Screw it". Hopefully someone can throw
me a little extra rope here. Any help
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have a Teles S0/usb ISDN adapter but I don't have a clue how to get it to
work under linux (using Redhat 6.2)
Usb is working on my system, when i plug in my adapter it displays the
correct information about my device.
I just don't know how to connect to the device ?
I guess it must be supported by the standard acm driver (the normal S0 box
(serial) is)
so where is the device located : /dev/acm0 or sth like that ?
I also need the hisax module but when i modprobe hisax it sys that it is
busy and cant be loaded
someone help please ......

You should probably use the 3c509 driver. Check the Ethernet HowTo for

When you run startx the window manager is started from ~/.xinitrc or, if
you don't have one from /var/X11R6/lib/xinit/xinitrc
When you run xdm, the window manager is started from
/var/X11R6/lib/xdm/Xsession, this file probably loads your ~/.xsession
or if you don't have one, it might fall back to
/var/X11R6/lib/xinit/xinitrc. To make sure that Xsession really is the
file which controls this, check out /var/X11R6/lib/xdm/xdm-config.
If you have another distribution than slackware your files might live in
other directories.

I have also seen this happening to 3c90* cards. However, the problem
seemed to dissapear when some old machines with ne2k isa clones where
removed from the network.

Netscape problems when executing java code is an old problem
and it seems to persist in version 4.72. What appears to
happen is that when presented with a badly written java program
it starts using more and more of system resources until it
hangs and has to be killed. In more severe cases it crashes.
It doesn't cause a problem with well designed java code.
I don't think anyone is sure exactly what the problem is,
but maybe it will be fixed in Netscape 6.0.
This problem has persisted much too long, and it is a shame
no one has yet tracked down the exact cause.

We have a digital camera and have used a Lexar card reader to copy the
pictures from the card where the camera has recorded them into the Windows 95
partition of our computer . I checked with the company, and they have no
support for linux. Is there anyone who knows whether anywhere in this world
there is a driver?
Are there other such readers that believe in linux and can load
digital photos through the parallel port without using the camera?

Not necessarily. When you buy something from an OEM like Dell, they often
sell you cheap crap and they make you pay the Windoze Tax. Buy parts and
put a system together yourself, kind of like so:
(all prices taken from pricewatch.com, from the middle, not from the
"cheap crap" section)
Sony Trinitron 15" monitor $200
Epox MVP3G2 motherboard w/ K6-2 500 $150
Philips 4/4/24 IDE CD-RW (no software) $150 (linux burning s/w is free)
Western Digital 13G IDE Drive $120
64M PC-100 DIMM $ 80 (get more if you can!)
Mid-tower Case $ 60
ATi Xpert98 graphics card $ 40 (cheap, supported)
Ensoniq AudioPCI sound $ 30 (ditto)
semi-decent speakers $ 30
FLoppy drive $ 20
Keyboard and mouse $ 20 or so
Operating System and Applications $ 0 :-)
Total: $900, about $975 with shipping. Season to taste.
If you're scared of putting the pieces together, any computer-inclined
teenager would probably do that for you in exchange for pizza and beer.

My SCSI card works now. How did I do it ?
A) with pnpdump I have created a file /etc/isapnp.conf
B) in that file I have enabled/changed the following lines
from
# (IO 0 (SIZE 32) (BASE 0x0340) (CHECK))
# IRQ 9, 10, 11 or 12.
# High true, edge sensitive interrupt
# (INT 0 (IRQ 11 (MODE +E)))
# End dependent functions
(NAME "ADP1505/849934698[0]{SCSI Controller }")
#(ACT Y)
to
(IO 0 (SIZE 32) (BASE 0x0340) (CHECK))
# IRQ 9, 10, 11 or 12.
# High true, edge sensitive interrupt
(INT 0 (IRQ 11 (MODE +E)))
# End dependent functions
(NAME "ADP1505/849934698[0]{SCSI Controller }")
(ACT Y)
C) I did run /sbin/isapnp manually for the first time
( it is done automagicaly after you reboot the computer)
D) I did run /sbin/modprobe manually for the first time
/sbin/modprobe aha152x aha152x=0x340,11,7,1,1
E) I have added to /etc/rc.d/rc.local the following lines
( please pay attention to the 'dot' at the beginning if the line )
. /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions
action "" modprobe aha152x aha152x=0x340,11,7,1,1
I am running RH6.2 right now. It works as a champ.
I am able to burn my CDs without any problem.

I've found in kernel archive two threads related to
'kernel timer added twice'. One was related to SCSI CDROM
