Subject: ORB drive (BEWARE)
Date: 05 May 2000 10:33:19 +1000
Hi,
I have an external SCSI ORB drive. As usual, it comes with Windows
tools only. The documentation does not tell the magic commands to
write-protect and unprotect disks, but that's normal, unfortunately.
There is a problem, however. Linux assumes that when it issues a
SCSI START_STOP (0x1b) command to the drive, the drive, if it
had executed an automatic spin-down, will spin-up. Iomega JAZ
drives do indeed work that way.
The ORB drive does not seem to do it, it simply responds with a
NOT_READY and that's it, the access error is reported to the
application and there's just nothing you can do with the drive.
If it is mounted, you can't even open it any more so it is lost
until you turn it off then on again (not a good thing to do on a
live system) or do a SCSI reset (again, not on on a live system).
<WARNING MODE>
I have sent a polite email to Castlewood support asking for some
info about the proper SCSI sequence to spin up the drive before
access as well as protecting/unprotecting a disk. First, I have
not received anything. Then I repeated the question, I got an
answer that my request was forwarded to engineering. Engineering
did not respond, so I re-sent my request. This was the exact
same result of the third and fourth query as well, although in
the fourth one the support person also mentioned that unfortunately
he does not know why engineering does not answer.
Therefore, if you run a non-Windows system or your situation is such
thet you might need technical help, STAY AWAY from Castlewood.
Their customer support apparently ends when you pay for the product.
</WARNING MODE>
Anyway, if someone has figured out what magic SCSI commands are sent
to the drive to spin it up (say, slapping a SCSI bus monitor on a
Windows system), I would highly appreciate it. I couldn't find anything
on the Net.
I would feel obliged if replies would also be sent to me in email.
Please note that the reply address is invalid, the real address is
in the sig below.
Thanks in advance,
Zoltan

I have two parallel ports on my server, one being a PCI card. Adding the
following hardware parameter to lilo does the trick if the parport support
is compiled into the kernel (there's a similar thing that works in
modules.conf, have a look, it may be listed in there already):
parport=0x3bc,7 parport=0x9800,auto
These numbers were found by pretty much trying any of the standard parport
ones and the I/O info found from /proc/pci for the parallel port card.
It all works swimmingly.

There is nothing on Compaq web site regarding this kind of problem.

I couldn't persuade RedHat 6.1 to play X-Windows on my ATI-equipped Dell
Latitude, even with an upgraded XFree86. However, I got 6.2 (beta at the
time) and it works just great.

I found one more Compaq model with exact the same problem. Watch out for
incompatibility in Compaq new PCs. eg. Presario 5834, Presario 7478 ...

Hey, I'm not talking about Toshiba or anything else. I have tried quite a few
different things. I'm not that new to Linux any more. I'm not saying I exhausted
all possible solutions. But it doesn't worth it any more. Why should I spend so
much time on something Compaq's own support reps don't have a clue? Yes their
Linux knowledgeable support reps even strongly recommended not installing Linux
on Presarios.
It seems old (more than a year old) Presarios still support Linux. Only the new
ones. Eg. Presario 5834, Presario 7478 ... I tested personally with exactly the
same Linux boot.img disks. Not intentional?? Go figure.

Subject: SuSe 6.4 install failure
Date: Fri, 05 May 2000 11:34:54 GMT
Can someone let me know how to configure my network
card so that it runs under Linux (kernel 2.2.14).
FreeBSD reports my card as:
de0: <Digital 21041 Ethernet> port 0xe400-0xe47f
mem 0xea001000-0xea00107f
irq 11 at device 9.0 on pci0
When I tried to install SuSe, I told it I had a tulip
card, and the network worked for about 3 minutes. Then
it silently failed.
This also happened under FreeBSD (but with error messages)
and I had to type:
# ifconfig de0 media 10baseT/UTP
What should I do under Linux for the same effect?
Poking around in the docco indicates I might need to patch
either the kernel, or ifconfig. The kernel patch instructions
were outdated though. I didn't have the ifconfig sources
to hand to patch.

Try : mknod /dev/usbmouse c 10 32
Now, when you cat /dev/usbmouse and move your mouse, it writes some
characters.
Then update the link with ln -s -f /dev/usbmouse /dev/mouse
More, in your config files, set the protocol of your mouse to imps2 :
/etc/sysconfig/mouse
/etc/X11/XF86config

Well, depends what you want to do, but I just bought off-the-shelf Compaq
ProLiant 1600Rs. They run Linux (RH6.1) fine, even with the SMART3200 RAID
card, and if you want a graphical interface, X-Windows will do this for you.

Try examining the status of the card with 'ifconfig eth0'. Check that
the card has an address assigned and that it is marked as 'UP'. If it
is then you can go on to testing the TX and RX functions indepentantly:
Note the TX packet count from ifconfig, ping another machine for about
10 secs (the ping command is of the form 'ping hostname' or 'ping
10.0.0.1') then run ifconfig again and check that the count has gone up.
Note the RX packet count, have another machine on the network ping yours
for about 10 secs, then run ifconfig (on your machine) again and check
that the RX packet count has gone up.
Having done these tests, if you post the outcome here, along with any
error messages from the driver - things of the form eth: some-message
that get printed on the console, I or someone else here should be able
to help further.

Hello,
I've some troubles with my I7K and pcmcia support which is very unstable :
- sometimes (not always), when cardmgr start, kernel says :
"Bridge register mapping failed: check cb_mem_base setting"
(I must restart pcmcia, or reboot)
- sometimes (not always), when I insert a card in slot 0, it is detected on
slot 0 AND slot 1 simultaneaously...
- sometimes, it is impossible to detect a card in slot 1,
but only in slot 0
Any ideas ?

Does anybody have the specs for the 12.1" TFT LCD monitor in the UMAX 338T
notebook?
I need a useable 800x600 modeline for XF86COnfig, but haven't managed to
figure it out yet.
I have a rock solid 32bpp 640x480 screen with KDE, but the 800x600 is not
readable.
I can get an 800x600 screen to show, but it is very unreadable, the
horizontal lines are shifted over giving a wave effect and there is much
"noise" on the screen much like a mis-tuned TV.
Other than that ,the Notebook works great.
If you can help, whether it be advice, XF86Config that you use, or directions

Prints in color all day long. Your app has to send color postscript;
