In general yes. I think I had 1-2 tapes that DDS-3 tape drive wouldn't read,
thatn the DDS-1 drive had no problems with (of course the tape may have been
bad, and since I don't believe the Archives that I had as DDS-1 drives had
error correction).

Subject: modem woes for redhat, desperate for some help
I am really hoping someone can help me out with this, as I am a newbie
to LINUX/UNIX.
I have an external 33.6 newcom modem on ttyS1. I am running Redhat Linux
6.2.
I tried using GNOME's RH PPP dialer, and first it didn't see my modem,
but I was able to choose what ttyS it was on, and it walked me through
the rest. When I went to activate it, the TR light on the modem keeps
going on and off, so I know it sees it, but I don't get a dial tone or
dialing. Here is the PPP stuff from my /var/log/messages:
ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/ttyS1 at 57600
ifup-ppp: pppd 2.3.11 started by root, uid 0
WvDial: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.41
WvDial: Initializing modem
WvDial: Sending: ATZ
WvDial: Modem not responding
pppd[708]: Connect script failed
pppd[708]:Exit
So I thought that maybe RH PPP didn't make the link to /dev/modem, so I
ran modemtool and set the link with that and tried again, this time
using the "ifup ppp0" but got the same results.
I also added/modified the following files: /etc/ppp/scripts
/etc/ppp/options and /etc/resolve.conf
I know the modem works with Redhat as I had it set up with redhat 5.2
but did an upgrade to 6.0 and got the problems I am having now, so I
upgraded again to 6.2.
Since the failure is it not getting a response from my modem, I am
guessing (hoping?) that it is something really simple that I didn't do.
Oh, I also checked it with an old external 14.4 to see if my modem
wasn't working but got the exact same thing.
If someone knows how to fix this or steer me in the right direction, I
would greatly appreciate it, I want to get off Windows!
Thanks from a linux newbie

I'm running a AcceleRaid 250, which is a little brother of the 1100,
set up in RAID 5 with 3x9.1 10k (IBM) drives and I had no problems at
all installing/booting off it. I did make a seperate /boot partition,
but with the newest Lilo, you may not need to do that. I have all my
'slow' devices Cdrom, Cdwriter, HP DDS3 tape and an HP T4000/8 on a
seperate controller. Note that you will have to >disable< the bios of
your second controller regardless of whether it's built in or add on.
I personally prefer an additional card rather that having it on the
mother board, but that's personal and either works fine. Also note
that the device names are different ie: /dev/rd/c0d0 for the first
logical drive. I suggest reading the Docs in the source for more info.

Hello,
I am running Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 on Toshiba Satellite 2520CDS with

My Linux recognized the Xircom 56K card modem in slot 0 and attached as

I'm looking for a new sound card after experiencing much grief with my
monster sound mx300 on my new athlon system (hard locks computer after a
few seconds of sound, tried switching slots, hacked drivers, etc to no
avail). I'm looking at the sb live value but wanted to make sure that
I'm not going to have the same problems with it that I'm having with my
current sound card. So any comments on using the sb live in an athlon
system (epox motherboard with via kx133 chipset)?

Sounds to me like, for some reason, Linux isn't seeing your serial port
ttyS1.
Did you check /var/log/messages to be sure it identified it? or check
/proc/ioports.

Hello all,
I have Linux installed on an AT&T laptop that I am using to communicate
with a hardware device.
I am able to communicate with the device through minicom.
What I want to do is set up a script so that Linux will send a request
to the serial device say every hour.
I also want the script to be on the "lookout" if the serial device
reports back an error message to send a command to the device.
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, quite correct Tim. I actually did use 0X250 - it was a typo. Sorry.
I gave up in the end and acquired an IDE CDROM. Hopefully (when I have time
to fit it), the problem will disappear.
Thanks anyway.

I am in the midst of replacing a WD 5400rpm drive (relatively new) with
IBM 7200 rpm drive, due to subtle corruption on the WD. I find I now
own a Maxtor instead, despite what the box says. Nothing against
Maxtor really:
/dev/hdc:
Model=Maxtor 51369U3, FwRev=DA620CQ0, SerialNo=K3H2GVEC
Config={ Fixed }
RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=57
BuffType=3(DualPortCache), BuffSize=2048kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=off
DblWordIO=no, OldPIO=2, DMA=yes, OldDMA=0
CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=-66060037, LBA=yes, LBAsects=26520480
tDMA={min:120,rec:120}, DMA modes: mword0 mword1 mword2
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4
UDMA modes: mode0 mode1 *mode2 mode3 mode4
My big disappointment is that it appears noticably slower with 'hdparm':
[root@feenix /root]# hdparm -t /dev/hda (WD 5400 master on IDE0)
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 3.39 seconds = 18.88 MB/sec
[root@feenix /root]# hdparm -t /dev/hdc (Maxtor/IBM 7200 alone on IDE1)
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 4.51 seconds = 14.19 MB/sec
Kernel 2.2.15 SMP on Abit BP6 with 128M, both with identical hdparm
settings and BIOS settings. The WD is considerably cheaper as well. I'm
a little miffed ATM.
Anyone with firsthand experience of both drive mfgs? This WD is the
second one I've had problems with, so I was hoping for something better,
and willing to pay extra.

I can't get this card to work with XF 3.3.6, XF 4.0, AcceleratedX's
demo or anything. It is in an HP Pavilion N3215 and I can't even get
a display at all. I called HP and they said it was a "Cyberblade 17"
like their web site says. I see a Cyberblade i7 on Trident's site but
no mention of the "17". I don't know what to think except for the sad
reality that the chipset is simply not supported yet. I'd hate to
have to install 98 for a month or so while I waited on drivers for
this chipset.
Has *anyone* had any experience with these new chipsets on the HP
Pavilion series? They used to have the SMI LynxE chipset which was
(finally) supported. As soon as they get support for that, they
switch on us.
Thx in advance for any help...

I had the same problem... formats and mounts Ok, but touch it with any file
and fsck throws a wobblie.
After sweating out various combinations of heads, sectors, etc. , and
turning off the drive at the BIOS level, I thought: what about the kernel?
Sure enough, the notes for 2.2.15 say "fixes support for large disks".
Upgraded the kernel to 2.2.15 and it's working perfectly now.

I just checked, and it is there now, at
<http://www.us.buy.com/clearance/product.asp?sku=70000013>, but they
only have 3 left. You'll need to add some additional RAM to it, but this
is probably one of the better printer choices available for use with
Linux. I have an Optra Color 45N (big brother of the 40) and its
Postscript output looks quite a bit better than I had been getting from
Ghostscript on my HP 890.

Nah, turns out it's the kernel. Upgrading from 2.2.9 to 2.2.15 fixed her right.
