Meanwhile I made it -- WITHOUT ALSA, because:
1) The whole ALSA stuff compiled o.k.
2) BUT: When loading the module als100, which seems to be the
appropriate one, I get error messages about unresolved symbols (in some
"time" module), resulting in the fact that the module cannot be loaded.

So what?
Did I miss some compile flags?
How do I have to consider which kernel I have?
BTW: This is the first time I generated Linux loadable modules ...

I tried to get my soundcard working, using ALSA and the linnix.com
modules, respectively, but with no success:

The ALSA modules compiled o.k., but cannot be loaded. There are error
messages about unresolved symbols in some "timer" module, preventing the
als100 module from being loaded.

The linnix modules show a very similar behavior (unresolved symbols).

So what did I do worng?
BTW, this is my first attempt to insert some self-compiled (or
downloaded, as for the linnix stuff) modules ...

The big question here is, are you installing the Linux boot partition
under 1024 cylinders? It has something to do with the motherboard,
usually. You may have to make a boot partition below 1024 cylinders.
So be prepared to start rearranging your hard drive a bit.

I would like to get image in cicle 2-3 times per second at least,
(the more the better) and with tv quality at least.
I have video camera with Composite Video Out.

What are boards to cope with this task and be supported in Linux ?

I suppose, there are two ways to do this work.
1 Capture board with
Brooktree Bt848/848A/849/878/879 video chip
But it seems these boards are out of date now.

2 Video adapter with video input ?
for example, i heard that
 ATI All-In-Wonder 128 SECAM 16MB TV In-Out
has a one of BT video chips (seems bt878).
But this way arouses my suspicion about confilcts
with XFree86.
Or maybe this question could be addressed to XFree86 ?

By the way. What are differencies between
Video capture board, Frame Grabber and TV tuner in
sense video input ? Does anyone have buffer memory ?

I'd really appreciate any advice.

Subject: Soundcard uninstalls after every reboot???
Date: Mon, 15 May 2000 06:21:04 -0400

Do you know why this happens. Ever since I got my new sound card, after
I reboot my computer (or ever after it just sits around for a couple of
hours while being logged into X) the sound card somehow get
uninstalled. When I go to play an MP3, it says I don't have the proper
hardware for it. So then I have to go into sndconfig and resetup the
soundcard. And another wierd thing, when it plays the test file, it
plays it really LOUD, and it is all distorted. But everything else,
while it is working, sounds great.

Just to let you know, my last sound card is not even an option in fixing
it. I replaced it because it was a SB 16 PCI and unless you were usning
95 or 98, it made my sound sound like the speakers were blown all of the
time. They never came out with updated drivers for a year. This SB
Live Value sounds magnificent (when it is working).

Thanks in advanced,
David

I do not know, but if it is 3mmc compatible, like most new writers
are, then the hardware should be np problem.

What's the problem exactly?

In X_window use lxdoom. lsdoom is for "console" mode. You can easely
adjust the windowsize by the command "lxdoom -width 680 -height 480" (or
600 800, 1020 760, or whatever, according to your screen resolution)
lxdoom will then remember these values in it's configurations file so
that the next time you can start only with "lxdoom". read also the
readme in usr/share/doc/lxdoom.
To get the sound working try to download the musicserver at the lxdoom
website http://lxdoom.linuxgames.com/

hope this helps

You might try the PCNet32 driver found is later kernels. This is for
PCI pased AMD Ethernet chipsets. Many of the HP PCI network cards
used the AMD chipset.

Did you Read The Fine Manual? I'll bet you didn't. Go do that. NOW.
Also read the Ethernet HOWTO at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html
and probably the Networking HOWTO at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/NET3-4-HOWTO.html

Since this is an ISA card, you'll have to know the IRQ and I/O range of
the card, more than likely. Test it out by doing
# insmod 3c509 irq=X io=Y
You can replace X and Y with 0 to try autoprobing those values, but it's
better if you actually know what they are.

Once you've gotten the module loaded manually, edit /etc/conf.modules and
make sure the following lines are in that file:

alias eth0 3c509
options 3c509 irq=X io=Y

That is all you should need to do. You might be able to do these steps
with whatever system configuration utility Mandrake provides, but these
steps should work with any distribution of Linux.

We have lots of them & even under Win9x :-) they cause problems so it might be

Did you know that ANY 10BaseT card will use standard phone lines? You
just need 2 twisted pairs. That was the whole point of 10BaseT when
it came out ... to use standard phone wire for networking.

So, pick any 10BaseT card you can find with LINUX drivers, in this day
and age, you should be able to pick up a card for around 10 bucks, and
a small hub for not much more.

Also, if you only have 2 machines, no need to buy a hub. Just create
a cross-over cable and wire the two cards directly.

Good luck
David
