That is only the configuration file... you want to edit that with emacs, vi,
or whatever...
emacs /etc/lilo.conf
then after having made the changes, you want to execute lilo so that the
changes are actually made...

That's not going to work if the machine with the modem is already using
the device.
What it sounds like you want to do is set up IP Masquerading and
Firewalling on the machine that has the modem (ie, set it up as a
gateway), and use diald to automatically bring up the link when you need
it. I set my network up that way to share a 56K modem with a Windows 95
client and it works great.

Hi, I have 2 nic. When the linux boot up, eth0 & eth1 are showed ok.
However, I type ifconfig, I can't find eth1. Then, I type ifconfig eth1
up but it shows "Resource temporarily unavailable". Why?

My X sessions have been locking up, usually once/twice a day, for the
last coupl

been ab
le to narrow down the processes which might be causing it. It happens
*primaril

fact, I've q
uit playing mp3's at all on this machine because of this problem. It
doesn't se

In addition, it doesn't just lock up X... it crashes the entire box,
usually lea
ving it in a state of "looping" some audio. The machine can't even be
accessed
via network. I'm using an Ensoniq Audio Pro (ESS 1371) which has been a

using the
default ESS1371 driver with this.

Hi,
I have a on-board 2MB ati video card.
Is it possible to disable this card and a new one?
If so, how? and what would you recommend for a new card to use with 19"
monitor? (not for gaming purpose)
Thanks.

My dream was very close to be true... now I have a pretty new "cool" PC, so
what´s the first thig to do? -> Install Linux
But dreams used to becomes nightmares..
When RedHat 6.1 starts the install program (GUI) my mouse dont work, it
simply does not move.
So I think: "deam!, theres a IRQ conflict"
I check up all the IRQ and forced all the Plug & Play PCI card to a diferent
IRQ. ( IRQ12 is -always- reserved to PSmouse)
Start over again and... the same thing...
I have tried many things, like use a serial mouse.. it makes no diference.
I think that the conflic its mith the network card (I know that some cards
uses IRQ12)
Well "guru" guys.. I hope there´s a solution...

Here some tips...
Do you have a module for the 3c503? It should be in /lib/modules/net.
If so first put the following line in /etc/conf.modules
alias eth0 3c503
then type modprobe eth0
Did it load? Check w/ lsmod. If not whats the error message?
3c503 needs a paramter for the IRQ something like irq=10 or so. Try to find
out which IRQ it runs on the put options 3c503 irq=10 in /etc/conf.modules.
Get linuxconf it does all this for you.
Read the ethernet Howto if you cant make sense of all this.
Get a better distro - RH6 is ancient.
Get linuxconf if you dont want to spent the time to learn all this.
Again read the howto's
Btw. what has all this to do with SCO?

I am going to by an ASUS L7251V Notebook, and since I will need a SCSI
controller for external devices, the suggestion they give me for that is
the Adaptec APA 1460B as PCMCIA SCSI Controller.
Anybody knows if it is supported by the Linux Kernel, and in case which
is the appropriate kernel to use? I intend to install Slackware 7.0.
Thank you in advance.

I have a pair of drives, and they appear as ordinary SCSI tape devices
to Linux. The Sony 9000 has a write rate 1/2 the VXA-1: 1.2MB/s native
vs 2.7MB/s native. VXA media cost is higher due to the AME (evaporated
metal) tape:
media native
cost capacity
drive ($/GB) (GB)
--------------------------------
Exabyte 8mm 1 7
DDS-3 1.5 12
DDS-2 2 4
Ecrix VXA 2.5 33
The Ecrix web site (ecrix.com) has extensive documentation and demos
about reliability -- a must-read. Features for reliability:
- helical scan allows slow tape speed (no shoe shine if data
supply lags)
- simplified tape path
- packet writing tolerates misaligned heads
- extensive ECC
- read-after-write
Features I like:
- rapid file seek, forward or back
- format on-the-fly
- usage statistics written to tape
- drive temperature monitoring *
- SCSI command reference on-line
* Utility available at http://patrec.com/rico/cooling/vxa1-temp.c++

Ecrix is doing a special eval program for the VXA tape drives. The drive
is free for 30 days, and if you decide to buy it you save some money.
Check it out at http://www.ecrix.com/eval.

MTRR == Memory Type Range Registor
It's a registor that is found in intel 6x86 CPUs, and in some
AMDs IIRC. As far as I grasp, it can be used to improve
performance on some main memort read/write operations. Sometimes
it's used in conjuction with the frame buffer.
It looks like the BP6 bios does what you would expect of a uniprocessor
system. The kernel catches it and fixes the situation. On my system,
it appears to set one to reflect the VGA frame buffer, and the other
for main memory.
