Just a hint. Could it be, that your machine and/or the video card is
over clocked? Linux doesn't like that, especially with AMD machines.

Something you need to check is in the printing setup in the remote
machines - i.e. - windows software is notorious for having a "print
banner" option in their printer setup as well.

I am trying to set up a pci Rockwell / Conexant HCF modem,
(id 1025) without luck.
The bios says it would use irq 5, but this is not confirmed
in /proc/interrupts.

Should I access it through /dev/ttyS3 ?
efax gives a tcgetattr error on ttyS2 and ttyS3.

How to fix? Where to look?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've been running an Asus P5AB motherboard with an AMD K2-350 overclocked to
400 MHz, and its as solid as a rock! (aladdin V chipset)

Years ago I had an early Pentium system with a Via chipset and wasn't
impressed, but I believe they've improved a lot now!

Just a concern on your 3C509's. Make sure that they are not
using the same IRQ's. You may have to reconfigure one via
the etherdisk dos utility (you can get it a 3com's web site)
go to

support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/3c509/3c5096.1.htm

download both disk1 and disk2

I have good results with Adaptec both 2940, 2940UW and
29160UW under Linux RedHat 6.0 and Linux Mandrake 7.0.
I don't think the 29160UW is worth the cost because the per-
formance increase is minimal compared to 2940UW.

I have bad experience with Advansys 3940UW where neither
RH nor Mandrake was able to recognize it under install. It could
be a single bad board because I never got it to work and bought an
Adaptec instead.

I think all the Adaptec use the aic7xxx driver with no problems.

Although Adaptec is more expensive I think it's worth it simply
because it gives less problems.

It is difficult to fix without the driver source. You can license the
source codes for 7.8 billions for now. It could be cheaper later on.

If you have Windows on your system, too, you will need to change the
Oki's default emulation to HP Laserjet. It starts out with "Hi-Per W"
emulation, which doesn't work with Linux. You have to go into the Oki
printer control program to do this.

Subject: Why does my VXA-1 tape only hold 14GB?
Date: 22 May 2000 20:59:42 GMT

Hi folks,

I recently bought 2 internal VXA-1 tape drives, and I'm having
a problem with them. The V17 cartridges, which should hold 33GB
uncompressed, only hold about 14GB. This is true for both drives,
with two different tapes. Can anybody point out the error of my ways?

     Here's the drive info:
$ mt -f /dev/nst1 status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=-1, block number=-1, partition=0.
Tape block size 65536 bytes. Density code 0x80 (unknown).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (1010000):
 ONLINE IM_REP_EN

and here's where the tape ends (writes fail beyond this point):
$ mt -f /dev/nst1 tell
At block 219514.

The platform is Linux 2.0.36 with an Adaptec 1542 controller.

This machine also runs an Exabyte Mammoth and a few Exabyte
8505s. The other drives work as expected.

        Any clues would be appreciated.

                                Thanks in advance,

If it's a trailer, then the printer itself is doing it without the knowledge

I've had extremely good luck with the NCR/Symbios/LSI Logic 53c8xx
series. They've been supported in Linux for the past 4.5 years now, and
the boards cost significantly less than the equivilant Adaptec boards.

If you're gonna go for a Symbios/LSI Logic board, try and get a 'stock'
one manufactured by Symbios/LSI Logic themselves. Such boards can be
purchased at www.insight-electronics.com and elsewhere.

I've had mixed results with the Adaptec boards. At first, they weren't
very good under Linux, and caused all kinds of problems. Lately,
they've been just fine. However, there's nothing compelling about the
Adaptec boards for one to go out and spend twice as much for one of them
instead of an equivilant Symbios board. I've also found that
Symbios/LSI have been much more 'linux-friendly' as companies than has
been Adaptec, so that's why I would like to support them (vote with my
dollars).

What type of SCSI are you looking for? I could give you a part number
and a source, but I don't know what you're looking for (ie: single
channel, dual channel, fast/wide, fast SCSI, ultra, fast-40,
differential, single-ended, etc., etc.).
