<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Hello,
I have troubles printing on a Apple Personal Laserwriter NT
(postscript
level 1) under SuSE 6.4 using the serial port (ttyS0)
I got it working up to the point that it prints the first page of a
document (most of the time I'm using emacs). But I don't succeed to
print more than one page. After the first page the led blinks for
about
one minute (lpc says that the queues are empty) and then just stops
blinking, so the remaining pages never got printed. Printing very
simple
postscriptcode or more difficult postscriptcode (different type of
fonts
and graphics) works, but only for one page... (fyi, when I go back to
Windows 98 I can print multiple pages).
I tried with long and short documents with always the same results.
Only
the first page is printed, the others never come out.
I tried Xon/Xoff and hardware flow control (both supported by the
LaserWriter).
I tried to change a lot of the parameters in printcap (especially
:ty:
parameters).
I tried to change the timeout settings using setserial without
success.
My system is a Pentium III/667 MHz, 128MByte RAM, 20 GByte harddisk.
The serial ports are at the standard addresses/IRQs and have a build
in
FiFo (16550 type of UART)
Is there a tried and ready printcap(?) to get my printer printing all
the pages?
Thanks,
Koenraad Van Nieuwenhove

Hi folks!
Last week I tried to write an interface program to a parallel port
PIC
programmer, which was supplied only with DOS 16 Bit Software. DOS and
Win
shit are history :-). The main task is to set D0 and D1 according to
a
synchroneous serial connection, so I tried a simple fopen() with
/dev/parport or /dev/lp0 (as root) and unformatet writings with
fputc() -
big fail. Is there a better way to get this job done?

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kenneth Rrvik)
I am running Mandrake 7.0 with the standard 2.2.16 kernel and the IDE
patch
from Hedrick to get support for my Hot Rod 66 HPT 366 based PCI card.
Currently, I have both the hard drive (Fireball lct10, 10G on hda,
onboard)
and cdrom (hdc, onboard), on the mainboard controller. (Gigabyte
ga5ax
rev3.0, ALI Aladdin V chipset)
Compile is successful (Enabled HPT366 support, USING_DMA_FIRST), and
the
Hot Rod is properly detected on bootup. Everything OK so far.
However, if I switch the Fireball over to the HOT ROD 66, and try to
boot
from it, the kernel hangs when it tries to probe the hard drive now
on hde.
Passing hde=noprobe to the kernel makes the kernel boot proberly
again, but
of course, now the hard drive is not detected :( ide.txt says to pass
the
drive geometry to the kernel at boot time, but this does not help
(wrong
values?)
Any experiences?

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use those new
large IDE disks (72 gigs) that arrive on the market
these days? By "use" I mean I want to access the
whole disk.
If so:
1) Is the BIOS important if I am not going to boot
from one of those? (I would guess not, but I better
ask)
2) What (experimental) linux kernel should I go for?
What have been used with success if any?

Hi all,
I've just installed RH 6.2 on my new 666 mhz Compaq Deskpro EN with
a
Matrox Millenium Video card. Installation went smoothly, I accepted
most of the defaults. The system has been showing strange behavior.
When I reboot, the linux OS boots O.K. but the X-server hangs. I
type
"startx" and the server starts to come up (changes the screen,
resolution etc) starts to paint some windows, and then hangs and cuts
out the keyboard. I can't even get back to a terminal. I have to
power
the system down and reboot. Now for the wierd part. If I repeat
the
power down, reboot cycle a couple of times, eventually the X-server
boots. Once booted it seem sto run fine, until I have to bring the
system down again.
Has anybody experienced anything like this? My suspicion is an
x-server
config problem. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi John this depends from the work you want to do with the
system.
If you want one mono-task-programm run very fast the P3 is the
choice,
if you have a multithreaded/multiprocess environment,
Database-, File-, Print-, News-, Proxy- and other Serverprocesses or
if you have more than one active user using cpu intensive programms,
or
if you are developer who develop software (make -j "n-of-CPU+1") then
the multi cpu system is the choice.
Here my thoughts for the SMP controverse in a Table:
Mono CPU | Multi CPU
============================================
Singleuser Games |
Internet Surfer |
| Internet Surfer + Proxy + INN + DNS on same host
| Networkserver Samba|NFS and other
| more useres at same time with KDE or Gnome (KDM etc)
| Developer (make -j n runns a build faster)
| 3D Developer, Rendering in Background Process
Single User host |
The point is: How many work is to do synchronously ?

Kernels before 2.2.14 had problems accessing IDE disks over 32G.
These
problems have been fixed. You shouldn't need a development kernel at
all.
As for the BIOS, it might be beneficial to set it to "No drive
present" on
the interface where you've plugged this monster drive. Older BIOSes
will
more than likely barf when they see a drive reporting a 68G
capacity[0].
DOS may not be able to use the drive, but so what? Also, fdisk may
have
problems with the drive since the number of cylinders will be huge.
Try
cfdisk.
[0] In Marketing-speak, 72G = 72*1000*1000 bytes, not 72*1024*1024
bytes.

(man tune2fs) I think mke2fs reserves 5% for root, which in a 61Gb
is
quite a lot of disk space...

Weird. Was it unmounted correctly?
(BTW I'm not sure of the max size of a single filesystem, maybe it's
worth checking out).

This is disk error. If they tend to happen always at the same place,
create a mini-partition around those tracks and run badblocks in
write
(destructive) mode to see what happens.
Hope this helps,

Probably. The module you'll need is under "Non-ATAPI, Non-SCSI
CD-ROMs"
when you "make menuconfig". Since you didn't give the exact make and
model of the CD or the sound card, I can't tell you the exact option
you'll need, but you'll probably recognize it when you see it.
If you're asking whether you can install Linux on a computer that
only has
that particular CD-ROM drive available, that's also possible. You'll
have
to boot from a boot/install floppy (all major distros provide these)
and
select your particular CD-ROM drive from a list of drives before
beginning
the install process (under "Non-SCSI, Non-IDE CD-ROMs" again.)

Sounds to me like you're using Mesa instead of the 3D hardware
acceleration. This is the default, because not everyone has a nifty
3D
card and few cards have 3D Linux support as of yet.
Anyway, when you say "drivers" up there, did you mean "the standard
X-Servers that come with Xfree86", or "nVidia's binary-only
beta-quality
accelerated X servers"? At the moment, the best advice I can give
you is
to install Xfree86 4.0 and grab nVidia's evil binary-only
3D-acceleration
extensions. They're on nVidia's website somewhere. Xfree86 4.0 can
be
downloaded in source form from http://xfree86.org/ but it's about 60M
worth of source. Mandrake may have RPMs for X 4.0 available--use
those if
you can.
Good luck; I tried this 6 months ago and discovered that I could run
Quake3 and only Quake3--anything else that tried to use OpenGL caused
X to
die messily.

the only thing that is cheap enough and has enough capacity to backup
today's gargantuan hard disks is .... more hard disks!
which brings me to my favorite cheap and dirty backup method.
1) rescue one obsolete box from the dumpster. a 486 or early pentium
should do. one with pci slots would be nice, but don't bother
being choosy.
2) equip it with a network card.
3) put in a giant IDE drive (optimize cost and capacity not speed).
now, just rsync to your primary machine over the lan every once in a
while. turn off the backup queen when you're not backing up. it can
be done for under $300.

There are some pretty good deals on Compaq Proliant 3000's out there
right now and I was thinking of getting one. They have SMP
motherboards, hot swappable drives, dual scsi-3, etc..
I usually use clones, so I have some concerns.
I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has one running
Linux. Any significant install/operational issues? Do you have to use
Compaq drives? Is the CPU a standard P-II, or does it have to also
come
from Compaq.
Thanks for the help

My expierences with Fritzcard and Eicon are that they are easy to
configure.
Never tried ASUS.

well if you give you particular distrobution you want to use and the
video
card we could be more specific. The general answer is yes, you can
yse
linnux. At the very least youll be fine in text mode. My video card
is not
supported either, but the ocmputer runs fine, even in Xwindows. I
cnat get
the 3d acceleration to work on it, even though ive tried several
supposed
drivers for that.
But he final answer is yes, you can use it. :)

So you have roughly 40GB of drive space which you *don't backup*??
I hope I have the wrong end of the stick here, or that's gotta hurt,
even if
you only rm -rf the wrong directory.
Incremental backups also make life easier, so a 'full' backup isn't
necessary every day, and how much of that 40GB *needs* backing up?
