I'm having this same problem w/ XPERT 2000 running RHL 6.1 w/ XFree86
3.3.6. I tried using both XFCom_Rage128 and XF86_SVGA as X servers and
I still have the same problem. Whenever i move a window in Gnome,
distortion appears.

Don't. Fix your output device (speakers, headphones etc) instead.
"Adjusting" bass and treble when the src recording is ok degrades the
fidelity of the sound. Min d you, the 1371 is pretty darned noisy to
start with (used to have one, replaced it with an sblive, which is a
lot quieter and has crisper bass and high end etc).

Okay.
The range of common, non-server tape backups is too low for todays
large hard disks. (There are 40GB+ now for under $300.)

When did I say you did?
This is something of a switch. You're being the pedant, here,
addressing the individual points rather than (what I see as) the real
concern. Namely, that big tape backups are too expensive for most
individuals.
No, you didn't tell me to buy a $10K tape backup. No, you were not,
technically, contesting the fact that tape drives can be very
expensive. You do, however, seem to be missing the point. It's not
that there are *no such things* as huge tape backups (in fact, if you
need to do huge backups, that's your *only* solution), it's that they
are *economically infeasible* for most people.
Now, that was not stated explicitly. (Not, as you so elegantly
pointed out, in the same sentence, at any rate.) But I do feel it was
rather clear, and it was the point I was trying to make.
> Johan claimed tape drives didn't have enough capacity for a 20G drive.

Yes, of course. If you can imagine it, there pretty much is a way to
do it. There *is* a way to get 50,000fps in Quake III - go buy a
supercomputer and invest five million dollars in a video card. The
point that something is merely *possible* is the purest useless
pedantry.

Someone, I think, is taking this a little too seriously.
I haven't reinstalled my system (because of a disaster) since... jeez,
since I don't know when. Bits and pieces I lose, but not the whole
deal.

Subject: Q: Tekram DC-315 and Scanner
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 15:54:41 -0700
Hi everybody,
I own UMAX2400S and Epson Stylus 860 printer - both model realy good and
supported in Linux. But SCSI Card which come with scanner is very basic
and not well suppoted in Linux. I managed to scan with kernel 2.3.99 but
only once after that I had to restart computer to scan next picture -
reloading modules and power cycling of scanner not help - scanner works
but instead picture I get just white space. In kernel 2.4 when I load
module for the SCSI card it lock system completely and I have to make
hard power cycle. I wrote to UMAX-SANE support guy and he said that it
happen because SCSI card doesn't have good support in Linux (really you
can not use it with anything else except scanner).
So just yesterday I bought another SCSI card Tekram DC-315 and cable
because cards have diffrent connectors. I managed it to work together
with scanner but observe some instability as sometimes I again get white
space instead picture. I downloaded xsane and it improved situation in
some degree but I still have to scan in 8bit color depth. But main
problem is that when I try to print from any application
(Netscape/ImageMagic/GIMP) I get colors which not match original or
screen picture - it more dark and colors is not so bright. It seems to
me that printer use too much inks when you try to print in 740x1440
resolution. Really I can not compare results with what I get in Windows
with drivers from manufactures in Windows it much better.
My question "Did anybody get a results comparable with windows for
scanner and printer or it impossible at the moment, so that I do not
beat my head on the wall?".
If somebody got good results "could you share this information with
other" as you can read a millions references on webpages but it will not
reflect results as we can not compare it visually.
NOTE: I run kernel 2.4-test2 (RedHat6.2), latest unstable UMAX-sane.
I will really appreciate everyone who has same hardware and able to
share information.

Subject: Problems with Epson 740
I`m slowly loosing it on my SC 740, using a 2.2.14SuSE Kernel.
I read the problems Eric Shamow had, but mine are quite different:
Using Yast I configured the printer, printcap looks nice.
All modules are loaded.
Now, when trying to print (like /etc/hosts) it prints
weird stuff in normal mode; raw does nothing, ascii does nothing.
Trying to use `print to file' with gimp and make a `cat xy | /dev/lp0'
it says you have no right to use the device.
When printing with Gimp it does work, but only at 360DPI and with
really poor quality.
(I did not yet install the new plugin from sourceforge.net,
for I used a RPM to install gimp and need some additional packages)
surely I`m no genius using linux,
can anyone tell me what I did wrong here?
Thank you,
Heiko

I have posted a Linux 2.2.14-5.0 kernel for NCR Microchannel based PCs that
should handle installations for NCR 53c710, NCR 53c94 and Buslogic 646 SCSI
adapters at ftp.dgmicro.com.
The file can be downloaded and unzipped from:
ftp://ftp.dgmicro.com/incoming/RH-62-MCA-53c94-MCA-53c710/NCRMCA2214.zip
I have included some documentation and instructions that should be somewhat
helpful for a RedHat 6.2 installation. I don't have access to the NCR 3430
model but I haved successfully installed Linux on NCR microchannel systems
using all three of the above mentions SCSI adapters. I have used the NCR
3433, NCR 3410 and NCR 3350 models. My current crusade is to figure out
what a customized kernel won't boot problem on the NCR 3450 server platform.
The original IBMMCA.S (from Slackware 7.0) kernel boots fine! RedHat 6.x
MCA installations won't even load the kernel for installation.

I say go with Raritan Switches, they are bit more expensive but
the quality is the best I've ever seen. Each channel has its
own processor which will solve the lockup problem. I'd spec out
a model at Raritan's page then buy through a reseller, I got
mine at iscci.com and got a better deal then had I bought direct

O'Reilly (www.ora.com) have a very nice (if slightly outdated) book

There are, of course, tonnes of free docs online, but sometimes it's

A rlated question: I once tried recording a couple of sessions on a CDR.
I tried several options on cdrecord and in all cases after recording the
second session (both sessions were iso files) the disk became unusable...
How can this be done and how does one access the different sessions

No hardware on board to do it. You'll need to emulate midi in

Hi everybody I'm considering the upgrade of my current printer (Canon
BJC-250) to a new one that should be faster, capable of better
photo-quality printing and with longer lasting ink-cartdriges than my
BJC-250.
My first concern is compatibility with Linux that for me is a
fundamental issue:
I was thinking about buying an Epson Stylus Color 870 Photo but a friend
of mine who owned one told me he hadn't been able to make it work with
Linux.
Does anybody actually uses this printer under Linux?
Is the Canon BJC 6200 Photo a valid alternative?

It's in the HOWTO. Read it--
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html
Basically, you'd do:
mkisofs -r -J /path/to/data | cdrecord -v -multi -
for the first session, then
TRACK=`cdrecord -msinfo`
mkisofs -r -J -C $TRACK -M /dev/scd0 /path/to/more/data | cdrecord -v
-multi -
Repeat as needed for more sessions, leaving the -multi off the final
session on the disc. Accessing a multisession CD should be end-user
transparent as all the sessions should be available when you mount the CD
normally. You can pass options to mount, though, to mount only one
specific session if that's what you're looking for. man mount.
