Subject: Linux on a Unisys U6000/65
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 15:30:03 GMT
I am trying to get Linux (Slackware 7.0) loaded on to a Unisys U6000/65.
I seem to be having trouble getting the SCSI controller to be recognized
upon boot. I have tried all of the kernels that support SCSI, with no
luck. Does anyone have any information on what SCSI card might be used in
these machines? As far as I can tell, the controller is built onto the
motherboard, but I cannot see any distinctive chips, that may point me to
a manufacturer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Using the kde vidtune utility I'm asked for a dot clock frequency for my
video card. How do I find this out ?
I have a generic voodoo banshee card and theres nothing in the pdf manual on
the cd about dot clocks.
Any help would be appreciated.
I have all the other information for my monitor.

Generally you don't want to set a dot-clock unless you know you need
one. xf86config makes this clear, I guess kde vidtune doesn't.

Subject: PS/2 Mouse not detected.
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 16:30:04 GMT
Hi,
I'm having problems getting one of my linux machines to detect a ps/2 mouse
and wonder if anyone can help.
I'm running RedHat 5.2 (latest version I can use, other software running on
the machine has not been tested etc for later versions yet) on a
PentiumPro, 333Mhz, 64Mb, Adaptec 2940 Scsi card, CD-ROM, CD-R and SCSI
hard disk. Oh and the pesky ps/2 mouse.
Everything was working fine until the kernel got trashed when soemone
decided to install Windows over the whole lot instead of onto a separate
partition.
I've re-installed RedHat 5.2, put an updated kernel (2.0.36-3) on (aic7xxx
driver was causing scsi bus to hang with old kernel) and only need to sort
out the mouse.
On boot up, no mouse is detected yet the kernel has compiled into it all
the mouse protocols I could find (I was getting desparate by then) and
still the mouse refuses to to work.
I've run mouseconfig a few times and tried various types of ps/2 mouse (the
mouse is a Microsoft Intellimouse, 2 buttons, 1 wheel button) and still no
luck.
I've checked the mouse devices in /dev and they all match up with what they
should be (according to various faqs, howtos and guides I've trawled
through). I even deleted them and re-created them (using mknod ...) and
still no joy.
Checking the irq's brought no joy either, Windows happily reports that the
mouse uses irq12 which, according to something I read somewhere will be the
same under linux as the irq of the ps/aux port can only be 12.
One thing that might help pin down the problem; on boot up gpm tries to
load but fails with a fatal error and message about "this operation not
supported by device /dev/mouse". (/dev/mouse is a symbolic link to
/dev/psaux).
Anyways I'm at a loss as to why the mouse fail to be detected, whats most
annoying is that it used to work before some idiot messed the lot with
Windows. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Amquest Hardware modem w/Redhat 6.1
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 17:09:06 GMT
Hello,
I finally got the OS to sort of recognize the modem by turning off the
PNP OS option in the BIOS and enabling the COM1 port in the BIOS. It
didn't have to be enabled for Windows for whatever reason. The Amquest
hardware modem has a Rockwell chipset, I think. Anyway, both rp3-
config and kppp seem to hand up or error when trying to initialize the
modem. The modem device is set to to /dev/ttyS0 (all other settings
say the modem is busy or something). With kppp, I get a "Modem Ready"
message until I try to connect. Then it sits there. The kppp terminal
won't let me type at all. Shouldn't AT&F or ATZ work for an init
string? Any help would be appreciated.
Also, if I leave the COM1 port enabled in the BIOS, I think Windows
tries to shuffle ports and reinstall hardware, etc. when I do this. If
I disable the com/serial ports in the BIOS, then Windows puts the
modmem on COM1. If I enable COM1 in the BIOS, then the modem gets
shoved to COM3. But I digress . .
TIA,
JM

The Athlon is good, according to a review in PCGamer. It is faster
than a PIII. I read that with some motherboards there can be problems if you
have an Athlon and a GeForce 256 card. If you can get a back issue of
PCGamer, look in the hard stuff and you should find it. It also might be on
their website www.pcgamer.com. You could probably find it somewhere else too.

Hi all,
I tried to install Suse 6.4 on a 200MHz Pentium MMX system. The setup
starts normally but then the system hangs showing a gray window with a
black X in the center (I assume that's X-windows starting). There is no
response to the mouse or keyboard and the only thing that still works is
the reset button. I noticed the light on the CD is staying on. The CDRom
is a LTN262 (now I know why the manufacturer calls himself LITEON...)
that served me well for several years under WindowsNT. I found 1
(German) news article from someone that had the same problem. He solved
the problem by buying a new CDROM.

I've installed Mandrake 7.1 at work running lpd and need to print to our
network printer, an HP 4050N hooked into the network via a Jet-Direct
card. in the printer. I can telnet to the printer, but I can't seem to
make it print.
After reading the printing howto, the printing usage howto, printtool
help, and a number of online resources, I've just about concluded that I
must be missing something simple.
I'm assuming that because the printer is connected via JetDirect that I
would configure the printer in printtool as 'DIRECT'. I've also tried
using the lp and lpr spools (not sure if this makes a difference). I
have the ip address entered correctly and the port as 9100 (I got this
port from the printtool help menu, anyone know how to check if this is
true?). I've also tried the PS and non-PS filters for the HP LaserJet
4.
Any help would be greaty appreciated, as this is a 'stealth' install at
work, so that I don't have to go back to NT..
Thanks,

Turns out that the mail-order vendor sent me the WRONG TAPES!
Having never seen them before, it took me a few days to realize
that they were for the SDX-500, not the SDX-300C, and that this
mattered. I now have the right tapes and they work fine with mt,
tar, etc. using the standard SCSI tape module (st.o).

Sony has contacted me and said they'll be removing this driver.
It was apparently beta anyway. Still, I'd feel better if "mt
status" knew about the density code, and perhaps other special
features not normally accessible through mt and friends.

I have used an AMD Athlon 700 MHz for months without
problems. I'm using the Asus K7V and have had no problems
using Win95/98, DOS 5.0, Linux RedHat 6.0 and Linux
Mandrake 7.0.
I'm not using the onboard IDE controller but havent heard
about problems regarding this.
I've heard about problems with GeForce card and K7V but
also seen some solutions ... better check current status.

hidy ho there
alrighty, my problem is as follows: I got a PC, running redhat 6.0. I also
have an external ISDN modem (Netgear XM128) plugged into my /dev/ttyS0.
right, using kppp, i can query the modem just fine, and all the lights go
all flashy and stuff. problems arise tho, as soon as i try and dial out.
It goes as far as dialing out, the log window tells me it's waiting for
"connect", then after a while the log window spews the message "NO CARRIER"
and then all disconnects. Any ideas on how i can configure this darn jobby?
I have managed to set up an external 56k USR modem on my machine before, but
i reckon this ISDN stuff is a little harder. am i right in thinking that
the problem might lie in the fact that being a digital line, there is no
actual dial tone? so the "atdt" command is rather nul and void right?
Any help in this regard would be most appreciated.

I'm not sure what option you mean by "DIRECT." When you click Add in
printtool (at least, as delivered on my LinuxPPC system; perhaps the
options are named differently in Mandrake), the choices are "Local
Printer," "Remote Unix (lpd) Queue," "SMB/Windows 95/NT Printer," and
"NetWare Printer (NCP)." Chances are the JetDirect network card responds
to lpd and/or SMB/CIFS protocols, so either of the two middle protocols
should work. I'll assume you choose "Remote Unix (lpd) Queue."

Again, I'm not sure what you mean by this.

When you select "Remote Unix (lpd) Queue," you must enter a number of
characteristics. A port number is not among them. You must enter the
host's name (I believe an IP address will work) and the queue name.
Since I don't have the JetDirect card, I don't know what it uses for a
queue name.

I'd set it up as a PostScript printer, since that's what it is. (You
could also set it up as an HP LaserJet 4/5/6, but that'll be less
efficient and have few or no advantages in most programs.)
