Hi -
A small "poll" type question:
What systems do anybody here run (mem/mhz/proc type/mem speed/bus speed)
that use their Linux setups for a lot of raytracing / raytracing only?
I am planning to build a system / change my currenty one to mainly render
with PovRay stuff that I designed in 95 with a scene builder. My currently
rendering jobs "reliably" crash Win95 about every two days.
Thanks!

Depends, they're at a good price point right now (in Norway anyway). This
may soon change, however, as I think AMD has discontinued production of the
K6-family.
I am very happy with my K6-2 400 setup, which cost me less than 1/3rd of
what a new PIII Setup would. I got a K6 233 and mobo with 32M SDRAM second-
hand at a low price (700NOK, about 80$). I have later replaced the CPU,
which I bought for ~40$, and added another 128M of RAM.
But you would of course get a lot better performance with a newer PIII or
AMD Duron. Then again, this would mean getting a new mobo, CPU and RAM,
which could turn out a lot more expensive than a socket 7 and a K6-2.
The rest of your hardware should be taken into consideration too; if you
have a fast hard drive and a good graphics card, a Celeron or even
PIII/Athlon/Duron combo with new mobo will give good performance.
Guess my point is, take a look at how much money you are willing to spend -
if funds are tight, a K6-2 500 with mobo shouldn't cost you too much. On
the other hand, if you have a bit of cash, getting a slot1/A or socket 370
board and a PIII/Duron/Athlon or Celeron (which are actually PIIIs with
some features disabled) will give you a little more performance, and
increase the possibilities for a future upgrade.

Hi. Its been awhile since I put together my TR/ethernet router, but I
believe that I had to build the TR card into the kernel (rather than
using modules). I probably would have tried modules first (it was only
the 2nd linux machine I got going). Also, make sure that you know what
your interrupts & shared RAM & addresses & all the other funky stuff
that TR cards have on 'em are - I'm sure I had to do that through DOS.

If it supports the MMX, then it has the split power for core and I/O.
For other people who may be looking at socket 7 boards, very old
boards may have a single supply for the CPU, which really limits what
you can use.
You need to make sure that you can set the core voltage to whatever
the processor wants. Some trickery may get beyond what is officially
supported - multiple jumpers, using resistors instead of jumpers. For
the ASUS P55T2P4, see this site:

I have a spare network transceiver available for a Z-Note, 10BaseT
ethernet. Email me if interested. I believe Win9x does support
network adapters for the Z-Note (coax and AUI adapters were also made
for that unit at one time).

3Com 905B or 905C. The 3Com590 will also work if you can find one
(they're cheaper, but they're limited to 10Mbit.) Use the 3c59x
module--the 3c90x one has problems.

Subject: Large HD + Linux + Win98
Hello!
I have got the following problem:
I want to install both Linux (SuSE6.4) and Windows 98 on a new system
with a 20.5 GB Western-Digital IDE HD. I have already spent some time
trying, but nothing seems to work.
Obviously Windows and Linux cannot agree on the partitioning of the
harddisk. I have tried both LBA and NORMAL as BIOS modes for the disk.
Every time the result was that one of the OSes only recognized 500MB or
8GB of the disk, or the partitions overlapped.
Thus my questions are:
- which mode is the right one (LBA, NORMAL or LARGE)
- which software should be used for the partitioning (DOS fdisk,
Linux fdisk, cfdisk, yast or WD Data Lifeguard)
- are there special parameters for the kernel or for fdisk that have to
be specified
So far I think I have found out that Windows only works with LBA, Linux
only with NORMAL.
If you know a solution: Please answer by E-Mail.

Only IBM ISA cards that are NOT LAN_Streamers are supported. A very few other cards
will work because they use the IBM
chipset. The very latest PCI card from IBM is also supposed to work, but I have not
tried them yet. I have TR running
on a number of Linux PC's, including my laptop, but they all use IBM brand, older
model cards.

Win9x (and other DOS-derived operating systems) must boot from a primary
partition on your first hard drive (meaning primary-master if you have
IDE drives installed.)
Win9x doesn't have to be completely installed on that drive, but the
core files (like IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS, and a few other key files) must
be on a primary partition on the first drive.
If you swap master/slave (so the Win9x 13G drive is master), you'll be
able to boot Windows. You'll still be able to boot Linux from the slave
drive - just be sure you install LILO on the master drive (pointing to a
/boot partition on the slave).

Hello
I have got an *old* IBM thinkpad 370C. The grapiccard should be a
wd90c24. I have a weird problem with my X, when using a quite new
version of X. Here is the problem:
As I start my X up, it appears normally, but when I start moving my
mouse, I see some flickering (as the screen turns black for a very short
while). If I move the mouse to the left corner and keep on dragging
downright right, the screen turns totally black. The same thing happens
if I hold my shift key down for more than a second.
This problem has occurred with Mandrake 7.0(i486version) and with Suse
6.3.
The most strange part is: If I use Redhat 5.2, I don't have the problem
at all, and that is with the same XF86Config.
Hope someone out there can help me.

This may not work. I have seen this cause the mouse to *not* work
because the motherboard thinks IRQ 12 is taken and it disables
the mouse.

Yes, that's true... You need a driver for it to work in
WindBlows, too. In fact, that "modem" is pretty much _all_
driver.
Unfortunately, that's a software modem and no such driver
exists for Linux (unless, perhaps, if it's made by Lucent or
by PCTel). In any event, you'd be much better served in
expending your energy in acquiring a real modem than you are
in trying to get that pseudo-modem to work with a true
operating system. Hardware modems have numerous advantages
over software modems, regardless of the platform on which
you choose to deploy them.

Unfortunately, I've given it to a WindBlows-addicted
co-worker. I know for a fact, though, that she hasn't
installed it, yet 'cause I'd agreed to install it for her.
So, I called her last night and asked if she's willing to
sell it. She says she'll sell it for $75 US plus shipping. I
thought that was kinda steep for a piece of crap but she
says if she sells it, she'll have to buy a 56K modem and
sound card and that will set her back at least $75. Let me
know if you're interested and I'll facilitate the exchange.
