Perhaps it's a problem with the way you have the kernel set up.
Similar requirements exist for the sound blaster Live driver. If you
read the included documentation, you will find this information
present. Depending on your kernel configuration, it may be necessary
to recompile the kernel.

The original Vortex driver as well as the current one work fine in
Mandrake 6.0, Mandrake 7.0, Redhat 6.0 and Mandrake 7.1.

It's been a few months since I installed the updated driver from
sourceforge, but don't you have to run "make" without arguments first
to generate the binaries before you "make install"?

Folks, I can't figure this one out - at least it doesn't seem obvious
(to me). I recently upgraded my kernel to linux-2.4.0-test9 and a new
problem appeared. When I copy files from my SCSI CD's, I only get about
a meg before I get an error such as:
 cp: NOCTURNE.mp3: Input/output error

I have two scsi CD devices (a pioneer DVD and a plextor CD-R) and the
problem happens with both of them. I also have a scsi IBM hard drive,
but it works fine. This problem did not occur before the kernel
upgrade. I'm running debian potato, with a lot of woody bits (if you
know what I mean). :-)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Death knell for Windows
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 08:56:41 GMT

After finally finishing my system upgrade I've installed both Mandrake 7.1
and Windows 98SE on my machine. What I found odd (but very cool) is that
Mandrake installed everything I had on there automatically and (apparently)
optimally. X runs like a greased pig and the 3D screensavers that come with
it zoom around the screen like mad, pixel perfect all the time. My new zip
drive worked straight from the box, my IDE CD-Writer was not only recognised
but properly configured as a writer before I even touched anything, the
whole thing was like a dream. What happened with Windows is another matter
entirely. Conversely nothing at all worked properly. The drivers for my
motherboard made it totally incompatible with my AGP graphics card, my sound
card still doesn't work properly (it crashes about half of my games for no
apparent reason). I've sorted most of it but its taken weeks. Linux worked
straight out of the box, no messing.

In short I believe that this is what is going to kill Windows. The
newsgroups are full of people complaining that they can't get this that and
the other working with Windows. Bloatware has finally become a true
liability as even device drivers end up conflicting with each other, mangled
dependencies in hardware and software causing chaos in the system. In
comparison, while there are a lot of people who can't get things to work in
Linux, for the most part (and I mean no offense) its usually because they
don't know what they're doing. Linux will work with just about anything, and
if it doesn't straight away, somebody will eventually write a driver (or the
user can try to write one himself).

Windows stuffs you up from day one. Its impossible to change some settings
that you absolutely have to change. You are forced to rely on drivers
written by manufacturers that have probably never gone anywhere near your
hardware, thus your video card quite possibly won't work properly with your
motherboard (as in my case), your sound card will happily sit there blithely
ignoring any request for it to make noise and your modem will have
absolutely no idea where it is or what it is supposed to be doing. I think
its time for Microsoft to learn the value of open source development,
releasing technical information to those who could make their product at
least work properly. Otherwise increasing hardware sophistication will make
Windows a fat, sluggish, crippled dinosaur waiting patiently for someone to
put it out of its misery.

I never run it anymore except to play the few games I have that still work.
If I can afford to ditch it, anyone can.

Adam

Hi,
I have the same (may be worse) problem with my Inspiron 5000e!
Looking on the Web I found that XFree 3.3.X will never support
ATI Rage 128: you should upgrade to XFree 4.0.1.
On my side I have the additional problem that the revision of my
chipset does not seem to be supported even by 4.0.1.
Has anybody any news on this topic? I looked on the "standard" pages
Linux on laptop but all the successful installations mentioned there
refer to the Inspiron 5000 (the one with the ATI Rage Mobility =
Mach64).

  Thanks

                                Fulvio

Xfree86 3.3.6 has support for rage128 chipsets, but notebooks may prove
trickier than desktops, yes.

Hi there Greeting to you all

Is there anyone out there that is using a SIS6326 video card with redhat 7?
I installed Redhat 6.0 on my machine and I know that it did not like the
card very much, but after a while of fiddeling I managed to get it to work
with 256 colors only. Do you know if this problem has been fixed in the new
version?

Thanks a million for your help,

I have an "Internet" keyboard with extra keys that I got working in
XFree86 4.0.

Attached is a message I wrote about it (everything pretty much stands
- except I'm using sawfish now, not enlightenment, but configuration
is much the same).

Hope it's some help...

Eddie <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

I don't know about a Microsoft keyboard, but the keyboard I've got has
lots of strange little keys on it (WWW, Mute, V-, V+, Play/Stop, Skip,
etc.), which are recognised in XFree86 4.0.1.

You can check this using xev.

If you get a keycode but no corresponding keysym then you can assign a
keysym to the key using xmodmap.

Here's what I've got in my ~/.Xmodmap

--
! Additional "Internet" Keys
! 161 = WWW
! 158 = Mute
! 232 = V-
! 176 = V+
! 152 = Scrolling Down
! 144 = Scrolling Up
! 151 = Audio Track Down
! 174 = Audio Track Up
! 146 = Play/Pause
! 163 = Stop
! 153 = Zooming -
! 178 = Zooming +
! 164 = Calc
! 165 = X'fer
! 162 = Menu
! 166 = Msg
! 222 = Power
! 223 = Sleep
! 227 = Wake
keycode 223 = XF86Standby
keycode 232 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
keycode 158 = XF86AudioMute
keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
keycode 146 = XF86AudioPlay
keycode 163 = XF86AudioStop
keycode 151 = XF86AudioPrev
keycode 174 = XF86AudioNext
keycode 161 = XF86HomePage
keycode 166 = XF86Mail

! I added additional KeySyms to XKeySymDB for these
keycode 152 = XF86ScrollDown
keycode 144 = XF86ScrollUp
keycode 153 = XF86ZoomMinus
keycode 178 = XF86ZoomPlus
keycode 164 = XF86Calc
keycode 165 = XF86Transfer
keycode 162 = XF86Menu
keycode 222 = XF86Power
keycode 227 = XF86Wake
--

The first chunk already had keysyms defined in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeySymDB, the second chunk didn't so I added the
following (as root):

--
XF86ScrollDown :1008FF1C
XF86ScrollUp :1008FF1D
XF86ZoomMinus :1008FF1E
XF86ZoomPlus :1008FF1F
XF86Calc :1008FF20
XF86Transfer :1008FF21
XF86Menu :1008FF22
XF86Power :1008FF23
XF86Wake :1008FF24
--

Now, they should show up (in xev) as having both keycodes and keysyms,
so you can bind actions to them. I use Enlightenment, so I used the
e-conf tool to bind commands to the keys:

XF86HomePage = Run command vh (my own script for starting a web browser)
XF86AudioPlay = Run command xmms --pause
XF86AudioStop = Run command xmms --stop
XF86AudioPrev = Run command xmms --rew
XF86AudioNext = Run command xmms --fwd
XF86ZoomPlus = Run command xvidtune -next
XF86ZoomMinus = Run command xvidtune -prev
XF86ScrollUp         = Goto Next Desktop
XF86ScrollDown       = Goto Previous Desktop
XF86Mail             = Run command gnudoit -q '(vm)'
XF86Power            = Run command xscreensaver-command -lock
XF86Wake             = Run command xrefresh
XF86Standby          = Run command xscreensaver-command -next
XF86AudioLowerVolume = Run command aumix -v -5
XF86AudioRaiseVolume = Run command aumix -v +5

I almost never reboot my Linux boxes and, since rebooting is currently the
only time the hard drives ever get checked for errors, whether I ought to
take preventative maintenance measures periodically, what precisely those
measures should be, and what would be the optimal period.

Thanks in advance,

Subject: Xircom Cardbus etc

I know that Xircom cardbus devices have problems working, but most
people seem to be able to get them to work somehow. Mine, which is a
10/100 ethernet + modem, doesn't work at all.

I'm running SuSE 7.0 bolstered with the very latest pcmcia (3.1.21)
but it still doesn't work. It seems that communications from the card
to the laptop (Sony Vaio F150) just don't get through. What I mean is
packets from the card just get lost and aren't transmitted to the
Vaio. For example: if I go ping 10.0.0.2 (even if the network cable is
not connnected), the card does not come back with network unreachable
or anything. If I ping the card from another machine, the card
accepts the input (the i/o light flashes), but those packets don't get
through to the machine.

First I thought it was an irq conflict. The card insists on irq 9
which the usb modules also want. But if I go modprbe -r usbcore, the
Xircom card still doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Got a minor problem I hope someone can help me out with. Every now and
again I get messages like the following:

hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }

hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }

These are the only errors that are showing up, and they don't happen all
that frequently - near as I can determine, only when I move large amounts
of data from one partition to another (hda5 to hda7 I think).

I really don't know what this means other than there is some
not-to-serious problem. Anyone know what might be causing the problem and
how to fix it? I am willing to RTFM, but don't know which one to read.

TIA,
