Hello,
is there any knowwn problem using the Initio INI 9100UW controller with
an YAMAHA CRW 4416S
CD-Recorder. Whenever the Recorder is used on this SCSI-board, the
driver stops loading after scanning the
devices. The Recorder is detected, but than the system holds. What the
problem could be?

Subject: help: Riva TNT2 and Red Hat 7
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 22:24:30 GMT
Hi there,
I am trying to get 3D acceleration to work on my system.
I have a nVidia Riva TNT2 video card and am running Red Hat Linux 7.
I have downloaded the latest drivers from nVidia's web page as RPM's. I
followed the directions, and they installed okay.
However, when I try to run an OpenGL app like the Quake 3 demo, X
crashes.
I have noticed the following:
the XFree86 log, /var/opt/XFree86.0.log states that the GLcore module
isn't loading. The error I am getting is:
(II) LoadModule: "GLcore"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module GLcore
(II) UnloadModule: "GLcore"
(EE) Failed to load module "GLcore" (module does not exist, 0)
In addition, I notice that when I do a
#/sbin/insmod NVdriver
I get the message: NVdriver: no module by that name found.
Here's the messages Quake 3 demo is reporting before it bombs:
===== R_Init =====...loading libGL.so: Initializing OpenGL display
...setting mode 3: 640 480
Using XFree86-VidModeExtension Version 2.0
XF86DGA Mouse (Version 2.0) initialized
XFree86-VidModeExtension Activated at 1280x1024
Using 8/8/8 Color bits, 24 depth, 0 stencil display.
So it sounds like there are a few things that need to be tweaked before
everything works.
Any practical help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

In general, since I do not have an LS120 drive. But I do have a ZIP.
You should use a Kernel with IDE/ATAPI FLOPPY support.
The LS120 drive is treated just like a CD-ROM drive on IDE. Its identity
depends on where you have it connected. It is most likely that it is
"/dev/hdd". That would be if you connected it to the cable with your
CD-ROM drive and it was the "slave" drive.
The IDE drives start with "/dev/hda" and go through the alphabet.
Unless it has some idiosyncratic behavior, it should mount as "/dev/hdd"
just like your CD-ROM mounts as "/dev/hdc".

I have an older system with no AGP slots. I am thinking of getting a 3D

I also saw a review for a Creative Riva TNT2 VANTA 32 MB PCI Video Card at

Is the Vanta card different or is it the same card? What are the

Whenever I try to burn a CD on our HP Kayak with a Yamaha CRW4416S

stage, whereupon cdrecord reports an error involving the SCSI bus
being reset:
[root@eroica tmp]# cdrecord -v speed=1 dev=0,2,0 -data scores.iso

Subject: video card dies during boot - sometimes!
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 16:28:02 -0700
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
I have a weird problem in my boot process. In nine tries out of
ten, my screen goes blank during the boot. The system is still
running -- I can (blindly) log in and type reboot and it'll do it,
but there is no way to get anything on the screen other than
rebooting (starting X doesn't do it). It's as if my video card
simply shuts down and won't wake up till the system reboots. It
works fine under Win98. And when it does make it through the boot
(if I just keep trying), my system is fine, stable and nice, and
runs X (and GL in it) happily.
My distribution is Redhat 6.2. This started occurring just after
I installed Xfree86 4.0.1 and the nvidia drivers (the card is a
Leadtek Winfast Geforce 2 GTS), which means I patched the kernel
part of the nvidia driver into my (2.2.17) kernel, so I SHOULD
suspect that code of containing something awry -- but the blanking
always occurs exactly when the line for loading the ES1371 sound
driver module has made it onto the screen. That driver still works
fine after the boot.
Making things more annoying, the new contents of /var/log/boot.log
and /var/log/messages after a boot, are identical, whether or not
the blanking happened during that boot! So no clues there.
My next recourse is to start laboriously disabling parts of the
boot one by one to see when the problem goes away -- starting with
the ES1371 module -- but if anyone has a clue about this or finds
it familiar, I'd certainly like to hear about it!
Thanks a lot,
- Gulli

Subject: SCSI DAT tape: bad or misconfigured?
Date: 19 Oct 2000 00:25:03 GMT
I have an HP C1533A (DDS2) SCSI DAT drive on an Adaptec 2940UW.
The device is recognized at boot:
kernel: (scsi0:0:3:0) Synchronous at 10.0 Mbyte/sec, offset 8.
kernel: Vendor: HP Model: C1533A Rev: 9503
kernel: Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
kernel: Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 3, lun 0
The 'mt status' command seems to work:
[root@pswin sbin]# mt -f /dev/nst0 status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=-1, block number=-1, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x13 (DDS (61000 bpi)).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (1010000):
ONLINE IM_REP_EN
The 'mt rewind' and 'mt reten' commands both return immediately
and status changes to
[root@pswin sbin]# mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
[root@pswin sbin]# mt -f /dev/nst0 status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x13 (DDS (61000 bpi)).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN
Trying to read the tape results in immediate failure:
[root@pswin sbin]# tar tvf /dev/nst0 >/tmp/tapelist
tar: Read error on /dev/nst0: Input/output error
tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
[root@pswin sbin]# mt -f /dev/nst0 status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=-1, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x13 (DDS (61000 bpi)).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (1010000):
ONLINE IM_REP_EN
My first thought is that the tape drive (which used to work
without a hitch) had failed. But I have had a hard drive failure
and reinstalled a later version of Linux (Mandrake 7.0) The
other part of the puzzle is that there appears to be no activity
from the tape drive when I try to retension or when I try to
tar from it. This makes me wonder if there is something in the
newer kernels that requires configuration to get the tape
working. It seems that the kernel is communicating with the
device, but the results are unexpected.
The tape is on the HA that holds the boot device, so that seems
to be working well and I have compiled SCSI tape support right
into the kernel.
Just thought I'd ask before I pulled the drive ans shipped it
to HP for repairs. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Out of curiosity, what chipset does your motherboard have? And have you
tried reseating cables and terminators? It looks like an older scsi, not
sure what its terminator requirements are.

Most people here will tell you that overclocking, as it builds up heat,
will cause mysterious lockups. Try it with all overclocking gone and see
if it locks up at the same time interval. Do the test with the machine
starting cold, not warm after other runs that were overclocked.

No problems so far

again no problems

what am i doing wrong
B. Install the source using your preferred method. The rpm contains
the netdrivers.tgz file so you'll have to untar it also.
-----Isn;t this what I was doing above?
C. 'make tulip.o'
I went to the /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES directory where netdrivers.tgz
was located and copied all of its files into
into a dummy directory /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/cmn From here I ran
both make tulip.o and pci-scan.o
D. 'make pci-scan.o'
E. Install tulip.p and pci-scan.o in /lib/modules/<your_kernel_version>/net
-------Did you mean tulip.o ?
F. Make sure the relevant rc script (e.g. /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, or
something in /etc/init.d for the RedHatters?) has a line that loads the
tulip module with 'modprobe tulip'
======I'm not sure where this is?
G. At this point, either reboot, or 'modprobe tulip' yourself and then
bring your interface up with 'ifconfig eth0 <your_ip_address>'
H-Z. Can you please advise
Thank you so much,
Chris Nelson

I suspect you may be right, but it would be nice not to use up an
expansion slot (as you've found).
I've done a little research and it seems the cheapest reader on
streetprices.com is the Actiontek (or Actiontec) PCI (w 3.5" drive
slot card loader) for $79. The model number is: AD7500002 PC-750
All I have found so far is the announcement that they will support
linux though:
http://www8.techmall.com/techdocs/TS990609-3.html
I'm still looking for more information about support (ie: some real
drivers) and other card readers that are either cheaper or better
supported.

**ROTFLMAO!!!** Thanks. That's the best laugh I've had all day!
Whoever you spoke to was, ahem, misinformed. Try these:
199.45.32.37
151.198.0.38
I can't promise they're optimal, but they're the ones I was given when I
signed up for BA DSL service over a year ago. (I've since dropped them
for being too unreliable, and have switched to Speakeasy.)
> Is there any way I can use DNS address other than
> my provider???
Yes. In theory, you can use almost any DNS server. The way DNS is built,
they more-or-less must be public. It's just very rude to use somebody
else's DNS server.
Another option would be to run YOUR OWN DNS server. In fact, if Verizon
hasn't improved any since I last used them (as Bell Atlantic), you'll
be better off doing this. (There was a day-long period when I could use
my DSL because I was running my own DNS server, but most other BA users
couldn't use the service because BA's DSL had gone down. All major
Linux distributions include the necessary software, usually in a package
called bind. Configuring it can be a bit of a nuisance, though. I
believe there's a HOWTO on the subject, and it's covered in at least
some Linux networking books -- Linux Network Servers 24seven has a
chapter on it, as does the first edition of the Linux Network
Administrator's Guide (there's now a second edition available, which
probably has updated coverage). I've got a few links to these at
http://www.rodsbooks.com/books/books-network.html. If you run your own
DNS, though, make sure you block access to the server from anything but
local machines, especially if you're not running a current distribution
-- there were a rash of break-ins through DNS not too long ago. The
holes have been plugged in the latest releases, but if you're running
old software, you'd be vulnerable. There might also be undiscovered
exploits.
