Besides putting the lines i want into rc.local, is there anyway to make
hdparm remember each drives settings?

I have a Psion 5mx, 16 Meg RAM, 10 Meg ROM (various apps), . Has a serial
port and comes with serial cable. I transfer files using between the PDA
and my computer using y-modem. Though small, but larger than a Palm it
has a useable keyboard and a 320x200 dispay. Do a search in your Google
or your favorite search engine for Psion 5mx. You might like it, but it is a
tad pricey.

I know win95 would choke w/o a floppy, but OTOH i don't always need my
floppy to boot linux on the laptop. could be an irq conflict. I'd
check that out

If you have RH, i beleive you can run kudzu, just like you would on
start up. Thats the no brainer way to do it :) I"ve never tried it
though..

The only way to 'remember' across reboots is to have the information
stored in the filesystem somewhere. You can put it anywhere you want,
just so init finds it somewhere. RH has a utility that sets this up
called sysctl. But it just manipulates a text config file.

I am using JBuilder 3.5 Foundation under Linux and have a Brother 1270N
network laser printer. Printing from JBuilder (for instance, source
code) is very slow -- typically more than two minutes to start printing
and maybe a page a minute thereafter. Printing from other applications
works fine. Is this behavior typical? Can anything be done about it?

Anybody out there tried one of those Ultra/ATA 66 or 100 RAID controllers,

home machine, but SCSI RAID is way too expensive. I'd really appreciate some
feedback from whoever knows something or has a working setup.

Date: Fri, 03 Nov 2000 06:10:34 GMT

Hi,

Recently got a Sony TRV320 digital video camera that can take digital
stills as well. Good camera, but the software is all for Windows. I do
*not* have a firewire connection on my computer (sigh), but do have a
serial cable that the Windows software uses to transfer the data from
the "Memory stick" which is a FAT formatted memory thing.

Any ideas on software or how I could transfer the stills using the
serial connection without rebooting to windows all the time? Any good
software out there?

Thanks,

Craig.

Hi,

                * Sis6326 AGP card
                * Kingston 128MB PC133Mhz RAM

When I boot my system. The BIOS shows the correct memory. When I see
the memory using top or cat /proc/meminfo then, it shows only 64 MB RAM.
I don't know why it shows so less memory....

Please help,

Ok, here is an updated question. I remembered that the "memory stick"
is a FAT memory partition in the camera. I connect to this through a
serial connection.

So, I think, it should be simple to mount the memory stick right on my
linux box. I tried the obvious "mount -t vfat /dev/ttyS0 /mnt/sony",
but got a "mount: /dev/ttyS0 is not a block device"

Any ideas on the theme? (I also tried a "dd" on /dev/ttyS0, but it did
not seem to work either).

Thanks,

Craig.

Add the line:

 append="mem=128M"

to /etc/lilo.conf in the Linux stanza, then rerun lilo.

There is a program called 'imwheel' which works for mice using the
wheel. I created a script in the Autostart folder which calls the
program when the X system starts.

Subject: Troubles installing an ATAPI ZIP drive on RH6.1
From: Alasdair McAndrew <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 03 Nov 2000 18:09:01 +1100

Hi there,

I am trying to get a 100Mb ATAPI ZIP drive installed and working on my
RedHat 6.1 system. The drive is installed, and recognized by both the
BIOS and linux; during boot I get the message

hdd: IOMEGA 100 ZIP DRIVE ATAPI

But hdd is not listed in the partition table; that only includes the
hda* disks (which is the only hard disk on the system).

I've recompiled my kernel to remove IDE Floppy support, and to include
IDE SCSI emulation, and SCSI generally.

However, the commands

  insmod scsi_mod
  insmod ide-scsi

lead to errors about not being able to find a partition on hdd. But
my (naive) attempts to put one there with fdisk have come to nothing
because

hdd is not a valid block device

I'm a bit stuck here. I've read all the documentation I can find, and
I'm sure I'm just missing the obvious (something I'm woefully good
at). I would like to get my ZIP drive working!

Any hints, suggestions or advice would be most gratefully received!

cheers,
        Alasdair

Subject: Partitioning problem
Date: Fri, 03 Nov 2000 08:17:57 GMT

All,
I have managed to set up Red Hat 7.0 Server install on a 1.6 Gb HDD
recently. Upon hearing that I just lost out on a number of goodies that
come with the Workstation install, I went out and bought a 15Gb Quantum.
Well, I finally (after 1.5 days!) got Linux to see the new 15Gb drive as hda
and the 1.6 GB as hdb. The jumper stickers on the drives were #@$!#.

I set up my partitions as follows:

On the 15Gb drive:
                                            / 300MB
                                            /usr 10000MB
                                            /usr/local 1000MB
                                            swap 128MB

On the 1.6 Gb drive: /home 300MB
                                            /var 300MB

Formating the file system goes OK in the above order
until it finishes the /var partition. Then is kindly tells me...
"Error mounting hdb1: Invalid argument. An internal error occurred in the
installation process". Then its tells me to send a chunck of code to
bugzilla.redhat.com which I am doing today.

Just a couple a questions:

Could the Master Boot Record on the slave be a problem? Could it have LILO
still installed in the MBR from my original installation? I used a Win 98
startup disk and then did a <fdisk /mbr> at the A:\ prompt, in an attempt to
restore the MBR.
>From Win98 fdisk it says it has an Active non-dos partition, so how can I
blow this away and leave it totally clean for linux hdb. Windows fdisk
will not let me delete this 'unknown' partition.

I know there is a lilo -u command, by can this be done during install (maybe
expert mode)??

I am sure the install would work on the 15GB drive alone, but I am just
curious.

Cheers,

======
Adam.

Alright, after spending a few hours trying to get all the how to's to
work, I realized that I couldn't get them to work, and that i'm either
missing something, or something is not setup right. When i use "modprobe
emu10k1" the error no longer comes up so i couldn't get the actual message.
But now i have a few more errors.

The first one is in startup, but i didn't know how to log the startup so
i couldn't get a file for it. If you could tell me what paramaters i need
to set or file that it's logged to, i can get the error message that that is
giving me.

The second one is when i try to use sndconfig. it can't set up the
Live! card automatically, so it goes into manual mode, and when i select it,
it just gives me an error that says:
"An Error occured openning /dev/audio"
and doesn't let me get anywhere else besides cancel or redo that loop
forever - manual select, error; manual select, error....

The third error message i found was during shutdown, it gave me an error in
one of the closing kill commands that said [FAILED] right after a line that
said something like "Saving mixer setting: Error openning mixer"

I did get a copy of the 'cat /proc/pci' command and it's posted below....i'm
assuming the 3dfx unknown device is my Voodoo 5, the Motorola is my software
PCI modem, the VIA technologies Unkown could be my USB ports (i haven't even
bothered to try working with that yet...my scanner is in there and that's
last on my list of things to get working), and i think that Multimedia audio
controller is my as of yet non-working soundcard. The only other thing i
have in there is the Zip Zoom SCSI card, but i'm not sure which one that is.
Hope this helps, and thanks again...

Josh

Your linux box knows the ATAPI ZIP drive correctly with IDE Floppy
Support enabled. to mount a ZIP volume you have to mount /dev/hdd4

Firstly I unfortunately have to say, that I donīt know where to get such
an adapter.
But to help you anyway, perhaps you may want to connect your laptop via
a nullmodem cable to another box and then use ppp to connect to your

This is a crossposted FAQ. I encourage you to do some research on your
own. Look for boor parameters and an append- entry in lilo.conf.
