Thanks for the tip. (Thanks to Steve and Sebastian as well).
Unfortunately I've tried everything in the manual and it hasn't
worked.
Meanwhile I've integrated a "alsasound restart" into the kdestart
script, reinstalling the sound card driver with each kde-start. For
this I regret having had to extend execution privileges to all for
insmod--certainly not very pretty. Not a good solution at all, but
till something better turns up, it'll have to do.

I am planning on buying a Linksys PCMPC200 Integrated Cardbus
PCMCIA card (since I want to move up from the 10 MBPS 3COM 3c509 PCMCIA
card I have now.
I am running RedHat 7.0 and the only reason for the upgrade is to move
up to a 100 MBPS networking speed.
I would really like to hear:
1. Is this Linksys PCMPC200 well supported in RH7
2. If you have used it, how satisfied have you been
3. Can I expect 100 MBPS or 200 MPBS (duplex) using this card - I have
a LAn at home with 2 m/cs. The other m/c has RH 6.2 and 2 100 MBPS
cards (an Intel Ether Express Pro/100+ and a SMC RealTek 8139 with the
SMC card connecting out over cable modem.
My existing PCMCIA card is a 10 MBPS and I have felt it is the
bottleneck for LAN communications.
Before buying the new card I would like to know whether I can expect
100 MBPS performance with the new card.
Any idea what is a reliable way to test whether I am getting 100 MBPS
performance? Are there any utilities?
Thanks in advance.

Are ya'll using media cerified for 12X recording? Most bulk CD-Rs are for 4X

I think the original poster is looking for a _good_ sound card with
decent sound input.
At least some models of SoundBlaster have horrible recording quality on
input.

Hi.
I'm looking for a PCI sound card that works with Linux that will yield
good quality recordings for writing to CD. I have currently an old ISA
bus SoundBlaster, but recording in the line-in gives noisy recordings
(poor quality).
Thanks.

Hi all,
I know these are general questions but here goes
print server
486 DX 33
16 or 32 MB
200 MB hard drive
3 lpt ports
file server for archival purposes,
486 DX 33 may be 486 DX2 66
16 or 32 MB
large hard drive probably fast
CD-ROM drive for loading software across network
Tape drive and/or CDR
if CDR probably the 486 will need to P150 at least
firewall /gateway/fax server
486 DX2 66
32MB
200 MB HD mainly needed for the FAX server if only firewall/gateway
then could be floppy based
2NICs; 1 to internal net; 1 to internet not necessary in the beginning
for the testing phase but will used later.
Modem External for Dial-up and FAX
I have seperated the Firewall/router/FAX server into a different
system for safety reasons although I have had suggested that all could
go onto one system.
Please comment. These are only my thoughts but I would like to see if
I am heading in the correct direction.
Please give reasons along with any suggestions.

How many users? If you have a lot, a 486/33 or even 486/66 may not be
enough. Are we talking PCI here, or EISA/ISA/MCA/what? For a big
fileserver, you definitely need bigger than ISA.
This is a SCSI drive, right? If it's a big file server, you should
look into RAID.
> firewall /gateway/fax server
For a 20-fax-a-day system, I've used a P-100, and it was fine. Faxes
use 0% CPU time. If you're using it for all three (which I assume you
are), you may want slightly more than a 486. I believe the
firewalling HOWTO suggests a 486 as the minimum. (The fact that the
computer is a gateway won't consume more bandwidth than it would as a
firewall.)

Separation is good. Put the file server on the internal LAN.

There's a fairly recent thread on what sort of system is needed for a
heavy-duty file server. Check Deja (www.dejanews.com) for those
articles.

Hello,
To solve your problem you only have to remove the lp=/dev/null in your
/etc/printcap file.
Here is an example for a HP4000N
lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:rm=1.2.3.4:\
:rp=any_name:\
:lpd_bounce=true:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: # if needed
Hope that solve your problem.
Bye
Alberto Bellorin

Subject: Best NIC for Red Hat 6.1 internet connection?
Date: Sun, 05 Nov 2000 13:56:38 GMT
I'm looking for a good NIC for my firewall, which runs on Red Hat 6.1.
I've tried several 3c509Bs. They work OK with the intranet connection, but
behave erratically with the cable modem connection to the internet. I've
reconfigured the cards, swapped them out, changed ports and IRQs with 3Com
software, etc, etc, but the result is always the same. The internet NIC
will work OK for a few weeks and then go out.
I've corresponded with several people who have had the same problem with the
3c509B. I need a NIC that I can configure, install, and then forget about.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Roy
