I associate LUNs (Logical Unit Addressing) with RAID. I don't know if
just an internal RAID card would be enough, or whether it would also
require additional software (beyond the RAID capable kernel and tools).
My guess is that a RAID card that supports LUNs would be enough.

Yes, it's probably best to use DOS fdisk to set up the DOS partitions,
since it will respect DOS's arbitrary limits (only one primary partition
per drive, and who knows what else). Then use linux fdisk to carve up the
rest and change the partition types.

Poor brain-damaged Windows can get terminally confused if all of the WinDOS
partitions don't come first on the drive. So, your first plan was probably
best: first C:, D:, and E: partitions, then all of your linux partitions.

To get around the size limit in lilo, use a recent version-- haven't tried
it but I'm told that recent versions of lilo don't have the 8 GB
constraint.

Good luck,
Andrew.

This is the only "right" way to do RAID1 on IDE/ATA disk drives. Otherwise, if you put
both drives on the same channel and the master dies, the array dies. Rather defeats
the

Hardly irrelevant. You're right. The OP should have thought to look
there first. The LDP site is the _first_ place to look for any such
information. Then, think about posting to a NG.

But then, most of us already knew that. Sorry for the rude

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE, find out the correct information for your

monitor and/or video card using incorrect horizontal/vertical sync rates.
Trust me, I've got a monitor in the closet that didn't make it through my

it's a 9'' SVGA and I really wanted to be able to use it. But it's toast.

Subject: Re: suse 6.4 problem

The first thing I would do is boot the rescue system and do an fsck on your
partition(s) to clean up any disk errors; I've seen crashes like this on SuSE
5.3 & 6.3 when packages don't install correctly. However, this probably won't
allow your system to boot, it will just fix your filesystem so you can move on
to the next step:

Go back to the installation "Add/Remove Packages" section and remove the
package associated with the crash. I am not sure what "airport.o" is, but it
might just be some X-game stuff. If so you can skip it for now and try to
reboot. Then, when you've got things in order a little bit you can always try
to reinstall it if want it.

If you still can't boot, you may have to do a reinstall. in which case you
might want to rethink having a single 8GB partition; Linux typically has
management problems with partitions that large. In addition, you'll find that
fsck takes a long time to check it and may even crash with an "out of mermory"
error due to the large inode table that must be manipulated.

As an example of a more efficient method, I laid out my one Linux system with
(2) 8.4GB Maxtors using 15 partitions each. Each of the major directories
(/usr, /bin, /doc) have their own partition on one drive, with none much larger
than 1GB, plus I have a second drive for /pub, /pub/uploads, etc. It's a bit
more work in the begining, but a lot safer and more efficient in the long run.

Hope this helps.

Now I am a wee bit confused. RAID?? I cannot remember exactly
what RAID is! Now it may be possible that this WAS a raid box. but if
so would a standard controler drive a box with a Raid card that does
what I want?
You see All I want to do is set the main address of the box to
1. while having drives inside (they are different sizes btw). as the
following modified example

Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00
Vendor: MAXTOR Model: LXT-535S Rev: 8.74
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 01 CCS
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 01
Vendor: MAXTOR Model: XT-4380S Rev: B5A
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 01 CCS
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 02
Vendor: MAXTOR Model: XT-4380S Rev: B5A
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 01 CCS

Does anyone have the adaptor card that goes inside the Storage
Dimensions unit that does this? Originally there was such a board in
the unit itself.
I also would like a SCSI cdrom case that does the same! I want
to get a few more Hitachi CDR-3750 drives (they are single speed but
nice caddy type drives) and stick them into a box with a similar
layout. Barring finding another Hitachi. Is there any currently
produced drives that uses CD Caddies? I find them indispensable for
fast loading and minimal CD Damage.
This is very useful as I have hyperactive cats!

Plextors, http://www.plextor.com/, are known mostly as Sun peripherals.
But they're expensive. The Plextors, not the cats.

I am sending you via separate e-mail the D-link setup/diagonostic programs.
Their DOS programs so you'll need a minimal DOS boot disk plus a disk to hold
the utilities.

Just boot the machine with the card installed to DOS, then swap disks, change
to the A drive and type setup. Beforehand you'll need to know which io/irq is
free in your system so you can set the card to ones that don't conflict.

There, you should have it in the morning e-mail.

Are you using a "winmodem"? Certain kinds of modems lack a built in UART
chip. The analog wave conversion ADC and UART functions are handed over to
the drivers for the modem. Unfortunately this forces the CPU to perform
this conversion so that you can send and receive data over the modem. Mpeg
video is a *very* CPU intensive operation. It's possible that the MPEG
decompression burns up so much CPU time that there's precious little CPU
left over to decode the modem signals so modem communications slow way down.
This used to happen to me. If you can confirm you are in fact running a
winmodem, well you'll really need to upgrade your modem to fix this issue.

Subject: Fake DVD-ROMs with mkisofs
Date: Sat, 25 Nov 2000 13:35:04 +0000

I have a Toshiba DVD-RAM drive (which only works properly in linux 2.2 since
2.4 is buggered, but that's another story).

For archival of data that isn't going to change much, I want to create
fake DVD-ROMs, using the type-2 carts that are removable and can be read back
in a regular DVD-ROM drive.

My initial experiments used mkisofs to generate a 2.4 gigabyte ISO image
which had to be done under linux 2.4 for it's >2GB file ability.
I wrote the ISO image to the disk using dd (it -seemed- to work, I think the
crashes in 2.4 are filesystem-related rather than device-related) and I had
a fake DVD-ROM which a friend of mine was able to read, even with his old
DVD-ROM drive.

But it isn't right. Windows 95 is destroyed if you try to read the fake disk,
Windows 2K can't read it at all and nor can DOS (which can read real DVD-ROMs).

Any ideas what needs to be done to make the disk fully compatible?

I'd really like to see a more in-depth explanation of your theory since it flys
in the face of conventional wisdom:

For any user, having accessed the first sector of a file, the least amount of
time will be spent if subsequent sectors in the file reside on the same track
or those immediately adjacent. Any lengthy excursions of the head in gathering
all of the sectors in the file takes time, and therefore wastes time.

Since it's an old, generic 33.6 it's probably Hayes compatable. Go for all of
the baseline stuff: Hayes, no compression, no speed shifting, etc. You setup
program is probably building an initialization string, or will fetch one from a
database, so the no frills approach is always best to start with.
