Actually, I just found out some more info on this.
ghostscript is used to render the data that is to be
printed. Samsung has hacked it's own version of gs
that must be installed before the printer shows up in
the printtool. However, the versions of gs that they
include on the CD are corrupt! They have the good
versions of gs available at
http://www.samsungelectronics.com/support/downloads/printer/dn_5407_en.html
These copies of gs installed just fine, then printtool showed the
Samsung printer! I found out that printtool is very smart
and will not show printers in the printerdb that are not
supported by the installed version of gs.

I have just installed TurboLinux 6.0 in my notebook (Sony PCG-N505SF) from
the CD-ROM which was attached a PCMCIA card to the notebook. I just
installed the minimum configuration of Basic Workstation environment and
after successfully installed and bootup, the following messages display :
cardmgr[155] : initializing socket 0
cardmgr[155] : socket 0 : Ninja ATA
cardmgr[155] : executing : 'insmod /lib/modules/2.2.15 - 3/pcmcia/ide_cs.o'

cardmgr[155] : executing : './ide staret hde'
and then lines of message 'hde : lost interrupt' prompt without stopping.
I cannot mount the CD-ROM now.
What happened ? Can someone help me.

Subject: printer problem - please help

Recently I have installed Redhat 7.0 in my standalone machine at home. I
was trying to install my printer Epson Stylus Color 900 with printool.
After setting up the printer and starting lpd when I try to print the test
page I'm getting an error message:
'Get_localhost - bad domain name.' I do have networking installed in my
printer (I installed the whole Redhat 7 suite). I read the Q&A here in the
Usenet - tried many other ways to make my printer work but no success !!
My /etc/hosts file reads 127.0.0.1 localhost
My /etc/host.conf reads order hosts
(I tried with /etc/host.conf as hosts, bind (with DNS))
When I reboot my machine, the lpd daemon is also showing an error message:
'Get_localhost - IP address can't find.'- something like that!
Can anyone help me on what to do - how to setup the printer correctly?
And by the way, do anyone know what's the best driver I can choose for
Epson Stylus 900 (Is it Epson Stylus Color?)? Any ideas? I really
appreciate your help.

I'm surpised that you are have any trouble at all. I think that card uses
the "tulip" driver, so if you do an "lsmod" at a command prompt and see this
driver listed, then it loaded and you have something else wrong, like TCP/IP
not configured correctly. I personally have been using the NetGear FA310TX
which actually come with the source code to a known working "tulip" driver,
but I've never had to use it. The driver that came with my distribution
always worked fine.
One final thing: RH 7 was kind of rushed onto the market a little before
it's time. You might ask around and make sure it didn't come with a broken
"tulip" driver, since I think it was broken for awhile with Linux kernals
around the one with the kernal that is in RH 7, but maybe I'm wrong.

Most of them do.
Mainly stay away for the distro's that say that they have been optimized for
Pentium class computers. An example of one of these is Mandrake linux. I
currently have Redhat 6.2 running on an old 486 just fine. One note: If you
want to run some of the fancy GUI's like KDE or GNOME, you'll need lots of
memory (at least 32 megs, but preferably more) otherwise you be waiting
around awhile as the machine thrashes. An interesting distro that is kind
of good for this, although it still has some rough edges, is one called
Vector linux. It comes with IceWM which is a lightweight window manager and
runs quite well on 486's with low memory. It's a 60 meg free download, but
probably not for beginners to install due to lack of documentation. Of
course if you are not going to run an X server at all, you don't have to
worry about any of this. Linux has very good driver support for those
vintage old cards that you are likely to have in that old 486 as well
(better than the current Micro$oft products!).

RAID is an acronym, with a few variations on its original meaning. They
are all something like: Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. In terms
of what you are looking for, it is a means of combining different hard
drives to work together in one way or another (many levels of RAID are
alive in the computer world). Some of those variations are:
Combining disks to appear as a single larger disk (with performance
improvement); combining disks to work in parallel so that a failed disk
is auto-replaced by the working mirror; combinations of the former and
latter. LUN addressing is needed for larger arrays because those arrays
can become enormous...many terabytes...and it becomes convenient to
break it up in more flexible ways than what a common desktop computer
can do on a single disk (the array will appear as a single disk to the
operating system in most cases). One would never expect a single drive
to be broken up into LUN's, only combined drives.

I'm also just guessing too.
But there is an "old" and a "new" NCR53XXX driver that was in my RedHat 6.2
Distro. In my case, the installer installed the new one which didn't work
with my SCSI adapter, but the old one did.

Yea, I've done this sort of thing before. One thing I had to do was if the
486 BIOS has options for the type of hard drive mapping, (LBA, Large,
Normal, etc) you may have to play around with these setting some especially
to get linux and other OS's (like Windows) to see the drive the same way.
Which by-the-way, I got windows to recognize large drives on old machines by
doing the same thing, ie: having a small boot partition within the first 540
megs of the drive.
Oh, you may also need to specify the drive geometry in your lilo.conf file
because the BIOS is likely to report confusing numbers to lilo.

Last I checked, the Alsa drivers intialize sound cards with all mixer
settings in the mute position. So you have to manually unmute them (or put
a command in your startup files) . You may already know this however.

There is some command that was in the "SCSI programming HOW-TO" to do this.
It was simply piping somthing to the SCSI controller in /proc and looked
easy, I just forgot how.

There is a website, www.linmodems.org. It is quite good about figuring out
if your modem will work with Linux

Hi all,
I have a Yamaha YMF-724 (DS-1 Audio Controller) PCI sound card
installed. It is recognized by DrakConf but when it runs it's 8-bit
sample, I hear nothing. The kernel module is snd-card-ymfpci. Do I
need to activate something in a file? I am a newbie to this so if you
have an explanation, please be very explicit in your answer.
Thank you very kindly!

Why not? I have a USR 1784 (Sportster Voice 56K external) that works great
with vgetty for answering voice, fax, and data calls. As long as yours
isn't a Winmodem, you might want to give vgetty a shot and see if it'll
work.

Has anyone tried the Philips 107S21 monitor with Linux?
Is it any good? I am thinking about getting one to use with my Mandrake
7.2, but don't want to end up with a piece of crap.
TIA
Fred
