hi, i have an FIC SD11 motherboard with the amd 751 chipset, an athlon 700
cpu, xpert98 video card, some yamaha card that doesnt work, western digital
10g drive, and a sony 100es monitor. i have never been able to install any
stable os on this box.. the closest ive gotten is with mandrake. ive tried
windows, freeBSD, slackware, redhat7, and suse. im running mandrake7.2 right
now. it can only run for about 2 hours before the x server crashes.. now
that ive got 7.2 running it givs me a little message:
________________________________________________________________
short description
The application KDesktop (kdesktop) crashed and caused the signal 11
(SIGSEGV)
what is this?
An application mostly recieves the SIGSEGV signal due to a bug in the
application. The application was asked to dave its documents.
________________________________________________________________

even if i dont run x, linux will always crash. even when i installed redhat7
x would still crash after the same mount of time, being a few hours at the
most. is it possible that is a hardware problem? like that my video card or
motherboard is defective? also if anyone knows what log files would help
solve the problem, let me know and ill post them.
also does anyone know if theres a problem with linux and the amd750 chipset?

any help is greatly appreciated

I wasn't sure if this was the case for all HE, I was looking at
SuperMicro HE's, which have no AGP. AGP 4x isn't all that useful yet,
although the Pro slot is very useful. Nice to know it is available.

The SuperMicro 370DL3 and DLE are just LS chipset, and the DE6 is HE-LS
(not WS), and does not support all the things a true WS supports (the WS
supports 4x AGP; there may be some other minor differences). Apparently
the LS and combinations of HE-LS are out there and do a good job, but an
email from a ServerWorks rep flat out told me the WS would not be
available until December (but that was a month ago, and it is now nearly
December :) So I guess I can wait a bit longer for the true WS chipset.

Looks like my i840 will be replaced by ServerWorks! I have to wonder if
Intel is even aware that they are about to be removed from the high end
linux server market (at least in motherboards).

Apache should run quite well on that hardware, I guess you don't have too
heavy traffic. You can try boa if apache is to demanding for that pc.

Subject: double initialisation
Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 08:06:26 +0000

Hi,

I wanted to install a Genius EasyPen tablet.

After a few hours of struggling with tablet settings, ports, versions of

xf86Summa.so and XF86Config, I got my Genius Easypen tablet to work
under
Linux Red Hat 6.1.
I am testing this starting X with startx (I am in init level 3)
The table is configured as a SummaSketch, the resolution is set to 1600
lines and the size 4 by 3. This is how my XF86Config is altered

Section "Modules"
  Load xf86Summa.so
EndSection

Section "Xinput"
  SubSection "SummaSketch"
    Port "/dev/ttyS0"
    DeviceName "tablet"
    Mode absolute
    Cursor Stylus
    Compatible
    ActiveArea 4 3
    Resolution 1600
    AlwaysCore
  EndSubSection
EndSection

I boot Linux, init level is 5. I notice that my tablet does not work
properly, only a little portion of my screen can be reached.

Crtl+Alt+F1, learns me that my video card and tablet are initalised
twice. The video card works fine, but the second time the tablet has
been initialised, the settings were altered (different resolution and
area).

I reboot, but with init level 3. I execute "startx". The tablet works
fine.

Question: Why are the video card and tablet initialised twice, in init
level 5, and what can I do to overcome this?

Ignace

Subject: ATI TV Wonder VE with Caldera 2.4 Tech. Preview

Here is the part of my /etc/modules.conf file which make my TV Wonder VE
work.
    # bttv:
    alias char-major-81 videodev
    alias char-major-81-0 bttv
    options tuner type=5
    options bttv card=10
    post-remove bttv modprobe -r msp3400; modprobe -r tuner
    pre-install bttv modprobe -k msp3400; modprobe -k tuner
I am fuzzy on the meaning of most of this. I think it came from the
bttv
code README and one of the Linux hardware newsgroups. I messed
with the tuner type number and the bttv card number some but these
were the only ones I tried that worked. Itried various combinations
of rmmod lsmod modprobe and rebooting to try out my test versions
of /etc/modules.conf. Rebooting always works well.
My system uses the Caldera Technology Preview w/2.4 test ??
I use xawtv to use the card. I still can't get the screen capture or
record
video features of xawtv to work. If you get those working please let me
know.
I also could not get the card to work under WIN98 but since I planned to

use it under Linux I gave up on windoze.

I don't know PICOBOOT, but I guess it's a linux-on-floopy distro

supply the C/H/S parameters of the HDD when booting, to force the use of
teh corrcet parameters.

I cannot be sure if this will solve anything, but that's your own fault,
telling us that some command "gives errors" isn't much to work with.

Hi,
I'm still trying to get my FPC-0103TX ethernet card running. The only
driver I found to assign memory and IRQ to the card is the tulip driver
but the card fails to work properly. Syslog reports that EEPROM is not
present; the HW-address recognized by the driver differs from the one I
find unter Windows where the card works fine. I tried several versions
from tulip_cp.c but that didn't help (latest state meanwhile kernel
2.2.17pre6 and pcmcia version 3.1.22). Anyone experienced similar probs
- may be with other dirvers or cards? Is there a way to get around this
or do I have to wait until this card can be found in the list of
supported hardware?

Many thanks in advance

Yeah, write it using the UDF Filesystem.
DVD's are not formatted with iso9660, but with the universal disc format
(UDF)

Unfortunately, there's only read support for UDF in linux for now.

All microsoft OS's I know off, cannot deal with a removable disc, that's
formatted with anything else than the expected FS on it. NT eg. is known
to crash om CD's with ISO9660 and rockridge extensions instead of joliet
extensions, and you now found out how win95 behaves on something out of
the ordinary.

Any Linux distro will work. But you have to remove all
unnecessary things (daemons, Desktops etc.). Of course,
Netscape will use all the memory you have.

A low-traffic web-server needs less computing power than Netscape.

ER, maybe he doesn't do C

By implication of your open source, you want ONLY programmers capable of
fixing bugs to use Linux?

Uhm, are you a Gates undercover man?

My BIOS reports 96Mb and kernel 2.2.12 only see's 64Mb, the append
command in lilo.conf sorted this problem for me aswell.

Though since I haven't done any C since my bust (I mean since the middle
80's) I guess I am not suppose to be using Linux.

I did not find it funny but never mind... This PC is meant to be remotely
shut down.
I understand that Linux runs in some protected mode, whereas Windows runs in
real mode. BIOSes are usually working well in real mode as their developpers
test them using Windows. But some crappy BIOSes don't work well in protected
mode. Apparently this is my case. A solution is to force the APM to run in
real mode, at least when shutting down.

Does anyone know a way to do that with recompiling the kernel?

TIA.

P.S.: Eric, my BIOS allows either '4 seconds then off' or 'off' for the power
button. So I don't have to wait!
