Hi,
I've a Epson EPL-5700L. I know it should be able to run under Linux.
(List of supportet printers in the printer-HOWTO.
Ive tried different ghostscript printers: i.E. ljet4 (the EPL is called
Laserjet 4 compatible)
When I invoke a print command the printer turns on his red (error) LED.
And nothing else.
Raw printing (using raw printer oder cat > /dev/lp0) doesn't work, too.
Is something wrong with the configuration of the parallel port?
My system is SuSE 6.4 eval. (Kernel 2.2.14, gs 5.5). I hope somebody can
help me. Thanks in Advance.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am CC'ing this to NEC and Trident technical support as well as the
Caldera and Redhat newsgroups. Hopefully the resolution to this issue
can be added to your knowledgebases. (No support documents available
via Caldera or Redhat when queried by "9388")
I am trying to install linux on a NEC Versa SX (PII 400, 128meg ram,
Trident Cyber 9388 2meg video) notebook. It appears the latest
versions of Caldera eDesktop (2.4) and Redhat (7) both have problems
with the video chipset in this notebook.
Both packages report the chipset correctly (as far as I know) as
"Trident Cyber 9388 rev.211, 2048k ram, programmable 170mhz mode
clock" .. however, when I try to test any of the modes, the screen
goes blank after a golden hued wave sweeps diagonally across the
screen. The modes given by eDesktop and Redhat are correct - 640x480,
800x600, 1024x768, all in 60hz refresh. I have tried all combinations,
all result in the wave and then the blank screen.
This behavior also exists once the installation is done and I boot
into the OS, so the notebook is basically dead at this point.
Windows98 and 2000 work fine on this machine, so it appears the
problem is video chipset related.
I would greatly appreciate feedback on this issue.
Thanks!
Mark

My soundcard has been working fine since I got it up until yesterday. All of

become garbled. If anyone has any ideas what might be causing this, I would

I got similar error messages when trying to burn a CDRW media; however,
the burnt media seems to be working just fine. I have no idea why such
error messages did pop up when my drive was trying to FIXATING the CDRW
media. So far, I have not tried to verify if the burnt CDRW media is
100% identical with the original one. Also, I have not had a chance to
burn a CDR media, yet. My CDRW is an Acer 8x4x32.
I don't know if the above information will do you good. Good luck.

Hi,
I've been running RH 6.1 Linux with kernels 2.2.12, 2.2.14, 2.2.16 and
2.4testXX for some time now and it has been pretty stable. Here are some of
the quirks I have run into:
- sound did not work until I added ALSA
- IDE throughput was horrible until I added 'hdparm -d 1' and it has been fine
since.
- it works fine both with the Linux 2.2 IDE patch and without - I have been
running it largely without the patch.
- I added 512 MB of RAM and the box needed to be upgraded to BIOS 1005 before
it would accept that - this is a BIOS issue, not an OS issue. After that, I
had to limit Linux to not use the top 128 MB or otherwise I would get random
kernel panics - this is most likely due to bad memory, I think, but it could
also be related to the memory map, which the 2.2 kernel does not support. I
have not tested this with a 2.4 kernel long enough to see the random kernel
panics.
HOWEVER: I have never had to use USB, so that could very well be the culprit.
HTH,
JJK

No. Stating something doesn't make it "conventional wisdom". This
particular old wives tale is covered in several FAQs. (not the linux
faq, as far as I can see ... though it hints at it)

Interestingly false. "For any user" is a meaningless phrase. Please
re-examine your preconceptions! The disk and the block device file
systems are completely unaware and uninterested in for whom or why
they are ultimately fetching or writing date. All that happens is
that the VFS layers get tired of cacheing or stalling and i/o
requests dribble downwards through the architecture ...
> all of the sectors in the file takes time, and therefore wastes time.
If by any chance the disk is not available at the moment data is
requested, the cpu will go find something useful to do, like finishing
up some more of your ssh ciphering communication with the window next
door, thus speeding up everything. Thus you should be thankful if your
data is nicely spread out! And if it is nicely spread out, then the
average ondisk distance between data requests is reduced, so the system
speeds up (and time to read a single long file increases, but then
that's what you want in order to get good performance, since reading a
single long file is a very rare event).
Sorry, you can't argue qualatatively like this. You have to argue use
profiles, and take into account other system measures. To help you,
here's my scsi disk measurements:

Have a look at the Brother HL-1270N BW laser printer. I use
this at my house and have been very happy with it. It runs
about $500 new and this includes 10/100 Base T builtin plus
postscript emulation builtin as well. This means no fiddling
with ghostscript. It comes with 4MB memory but for PS graphics
this is not enough memory. It takes 1 72 pin non-EDO SIMM upto
32MB in size. I had a 16MB SIMM from an old computer and it
worked fine. It also runs 600X600 DPI.

Hello,
I'm having some issues with joystick support in 2.2.17. I have a
classic analog-style Performance ProPad 6 (Genesis controller) connected
to the joystick port on my motherboard. I also have an unused joystick
port on my SB Live! card, and I suspect this is where the trouble is
arising, but not sure. I get the following results:
[root@pbd1040 danorris]# insmod joystick
Using /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/joystick.o
[root@pbd1040 danorris]# insmod joy-analog
Using /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/joy-analog.o
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/joy-analog.o: init_module: Device or resource

Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
It is possible to disable the motherboard's joystick port, and I've
tried that with the controller hooked up to the sound card, with the
same results.
Any hints (other than the non-helpful hint given by joy-analog!)
would be much appreciated! Thanks.
