        Hi All,

I've got a problem with a new Teles PCI ISDN card. Namely, when I try do
dial out with it my system hangs solid. I use the HiSax driver, type 20
(NetJet PCI), which should work, AFAIK.

My system: K7 800, 128 MB RAM, Asus K7V.

Please let me know if You can help me.

        Rafael

Merry Christmas!

OK, this is clearly an opinion topic (this is an opinion NG) but saying that
2000 and Me were "the worse" means that you'd clearly prefer NT and 98 over
the afformetnioned products.

You can. Devices not assoicated with the HID, network or DirectX layers
(such as scanners, printers, media devices) will function with non-2k
drivers.

> They are now shoving Plug and Pray down your throat.

So? Why shit around with jumpers and conflicts when you can plug it in, and
have it WORK then, and there? Or are you still bitter about Windows 95's
"plug-and-play" functionality. I'd love to see Linux even attempt to aspire
to what Windows Me & 2000 have for PNP support.

> Active Directory is nothing more than a rip off of an NDS tree.

True, but it works, and it's easy to set up. I don't see why even the
administrator should have to spend hours on complicated tasks when the admin
has better things to be doing then running around catering to their PC
networks. The network works for the users, remember? The administrator is
exactly that, the administrator of the domain. Not the other way around.

I'd love for you to decrypt my personal profile from my NTFS5 volume.

Yes, Linux's NTFS module provides full read-only to the NTFS permition
structure, user class nothwithstanding. I can get similar software for
Windows to access EXT2 volumes and do the same thing.

> This was confirmed on a 2000 Domain with an NTFS partition. Linux

checks.

Yes, I remember this one. Only it wasn't a "2000 domain", but a "legacy
domain". And NT4 systems could pretty much do similar stuff. (remember PC
masquerading)

At least the install line will give you the time of day, (and most
importantly, walk you through the reinstall). RedHat's support line is
staffed with people who remind me of "Nick Burns, your companies computer
guy" who would sooner have hung up on me then walk someone through the
actual process of <INSERT TASK HERE>.

> Winblows was designed for idiots and novices.

And Linux is designed for computer geeks who adore control, because they
have none. Fine, Windows is for "idiots". Then is MacOS X designed for
dumb UNIX administrators? No, it's desgned for people who can clearly see
the real power behind UNIX. HINT: try copying some of the REAL innovation
found in OSX.

> This is one point that even MS has not denied. This has been their market

have gone the way of OS2.

This sounds like a statement from someone who feels their IS/IT knoledge
isn't worth what it used to be.

Your only point of WIndows NT being a problem was the video card took "three
days to setup". Fine, why is the video card such an issue on a SERVER
anyway. 16 colors are 15 more than your Linux system seems to have needed
to provide basic data services (of which you do not list).

I don't think I care about Windows NT and Linux. When Linux can out do
Windows 2000 in every aspect (desktop and server), call me, then SHOW ME.

Hi,

I have the same configuration as you and I inserted the line

post-install sd_mod modprobe aic7xxx

in my modules.conf. This way the aic7xxx module is automatically loaded
when I mount the jaz drive. I have no other SCSI devices in my system.

Nope.

>Has anyone gotten this specific card working in a laptop?

Sort of.

I'll just warn you up front that I am working on NetBSD. Hold the flames,
we have common interest here.

First off, this is *NOT* a tulip card. It's a Wavelan clone, based on the
Intersil Prism 2 chipset. Look at linux-wlan.com for a driver that's
supposed to work with it.

Anyway, I've got it working very nicely with NetBSD's wi(0) driver (originally
written by Bill Paul for FreeBSD). However, I've got a concern:

If I shut off a nearby Airport, the DWL-650 goes into an odd state where
commands never complete, and the card just times out on everything. It stays
in this state until I "ifconfig wi0 down; ifconfig wi0 up".

This is in ad-hoc mode. In infrastructure mode, it's fine.

Cards other than an Airport (running under MacOS, of course) don't seem
to confuse it this way.

I'm about a third of the way through learning enough about Linux to build
a desktop system to use one of these (in an ISA adapter) and try the Linux
driver, so I can see whether it has the same problem, and I showed up here
in the hopes of finding relevant experience or insights.

I would be happy to contribute what little I know about the card, if it'll
help, but frankly, I'm not a kernel person, I'm not a driver person, and I
have no docs on the card, so I don't know a whole lot. I have learned (by
debugging this extensively) a lot about the card, but not enough to explain
the weird stoppage.

If it takes you more than five minutes to find a PPro-200 from Compaq

Subject: Modem Not Responding

**** Post for FREE via your newsreader at post.usenet.com ****

I recently removed a working, internal, US Robotics 33.6 (flashed to
56K) hardware modem from a Pentium 133 box, that is setup to boot W98,
DOS6.22/W31 and Mandrake Linux 7.0, and installed it in another box.
No problem. But the external USR 56K x2 fax-modem I replace it with,
both Linux and W98 report that it fails to respond. I know the modem
works: I tested it on two other computers, an Amiga 3000 and an old
25MHz 486 notebook, and it worked without any problems.

The modem is connected to the external 25-pin serial port on the 133
box, since the serial mouse is on the 9-pin, which is COM1. the
25-pin plug is COM2. Verified by actually checking the motherboard.
(The original internal modem was ALSO on COM2.) I have verified that
the Linux symbolic link for /dev/modem points to /dev/ttyS1. I have
even tested it on the other available ports. Nothing works. Even
tried installing it on W98 with the original install software that
came with it. Windows reports it's "...Not Responding." I've even
tested it using several serial cables. Same-o, same-o. Cables are
good. Work on the other machines.

My guess is that I've got a bad external 25-pin port. Anyone got any
suggestions to verify this conclusion?

They have a 1U chassis supports the Tyan S2510LE motherboard. It

IRQ 9 and 0x340 or IRQ11 and 0x140 are possible on this card.

Turn off BIOS pnp-support. The BIOS setting may confuse
Linux. But reserve IRQ 9 or IRQ11 in BIOS for ISA-Cards

Linux pnp installed?

generate isapnp.conf

you get something like this:

IO 0 (SIZE 32) (BASE 0x0340) (CHECK)) original

Eliminate "(CHECK)" (bug!)

reboot.

something like this, depends to your configuration
0x340,11,7,1,1,0,0,0

RTM! Which doku did you read? Which Linux do you have ?

In the meantime, what can I do about crummy phone lines? Is there a FAQ
on this (it seems like something that would come up often)? We've been
plauged with bad phone lines for years.

As I said before, we live in the country, at least five miles from the
phone company (cable isn't even available out here, or we'd get a cable
modem). But this is a tiny phone co. in a town of 1000 people. We only
got a *local* ISP dialup within the last year---we used to have to dial
into a town that was at 30 miles away.

So things are slow to happen out here... the copper that runs from the
telco to our house is probably a patchwork of old spare wires taken from
failed home electronics projects, crusty old foil and cold solder
joints... with a rat's nest every two feet.

The phone company claims the lines are pristine... but I've never known
anyone with lines this poor.

The tech guys at our telco are really nice and hardworking, but I think
that due to the smallness of our phone company, their test equipment is
pretty limited (and probably not too sophisticated). I actually went in
and talked to the owner personally... he was quite possibly one of the
least pleasant people I've ever dealt with.

Am I simply at a loss here, or is there anything else I can do?

It's strange, I had the March '98 code (verified it with ati7). Just for
kicks, I tried to Xmodem upload the newest flash code, and couldn't get it
to work in *test* mode (so I was afraid to try "real" mode). All the more
reason I think it needs to be sent back to USR (which will be done).

Thanks as always!
You all have been extremely nice and helpful.
