Kernel needs to be compiled again. It probably has in the ".config" file
a line like:
# CONFIG_2GB is not set
You need to redo the kernel. BTW, I think 4Gig is current limit.

** ok, let's rephrase the question
I was wondering if there was a difference in performance or reliability
between a Western Digital, Maxtor or Quantum Fireball when run in a linux environment.

Funny. I never noticed this before, but my /dev directory lists both ttys1 and
ttyS1. When using the latter, I still get an I/O error when trying to cat, but
at least I can run setserial now ;)

well actually I just discovered that it shows up right after I "make"
the module. I figured that it would still be loaded after I rebooted.
I rebooted and it wasn't there. I did a /sbin/insmod NVdriver and it
was there. It does show up in /etc/modules.conf though. Now after I
load the module and start up X kde starts up and the screen turns to the
gray and black then it turns blue and the lower right hand corner has a
window in it. I can also see the "task" bar at the top which tells what
windows are open. But then it freezes. and ctrl+alt+bkspace does
nothing. I am going to try using gnome or another gui and see if that
changes anything.

Can someone confirm which driver I should be using? I kind of assumed it

If you have a dual boot setup, you can force the card to 10 mbit.
That's what I did before I ditched windows. Mine is connected to a
com21 cablemodem and runs just fine.

Hi everybody!
i got the following problem: when installing the soundblaster live! kernel
driver as a module (under kernl 2.2.18) and running kmix under kde2, the
following messages are printed on system console:

(date)(time)(host) modprobe: can't locate module sound-slot-1
(date)(time)(host) modprobe: can't locate module sound-service-1-0

... and all that four times!

of course, the soundcard works as suggested, but it's putting a shadow on my
shiny new linux system :))

when checking the /etc/modules.conf for fun i found out that in the default
section for the sb live! the upper-mentioned modules aren't registered at
all.
now my question : what will i have to do in order to get this stuff working?
i'm desperate ...

bye, michael

I jsut went through it again to see what the error messages said. I extract
the files from the .tgz like it says, then I am suposed to tye "make" to
compile the modules. I do that and my error messages are as follows:

pci-skeleton.c: In function 'netdev_open'
pci-skeleton.c: structure has no member named: 'tbusy'
pci-skeleton.c: structure has no member named: 'interrupt'
pci-skeleton.c: structure has no member named: 'start'

It jsut goes on like that saying things like that for a bunxh of different
"In function" things. I tried to "make" just the two files that appear to be
required (pci-scan.c, tulip.c) but it does the same thing for them. Please
help me out on this one, as I'm really lost.

...after getting back from holiday, I'm picking up the pieces of mu Linux
intallation woes. I have inadvertantly hit the 'catchup' option on MS
Outlook express and cannot get to my questions from a few weeks ago.

I'm getting the Linux 7 install to see my hard drive when I pulg it directly
into IDE1 (and not the Highpoint HPT366 controller slot -
IDE3/IDE4)...progress! However, I cannot get the installation to see my
Sony CD ROM (CDU4811; 48X ATAPI CDROM). I have been proving the following
line at installation (which is probably incorrect):

linux hdc=cdrom

I have the CD ROM plugged into IDE2 (right next to the hard drive) on my
ABit BE6-II. Here's the response that I'm getting:

hdc: drive not ready for command

...and then it keeps polling to find the drive (ATAPI time-out, etc...)

Does anybody out there have Sony CD ROM with Linux going? Any suggestions
on this?

Thanks,
