Hi Ken,

I am the maintainer for the ide-floppy driver. I suspect from your post
that you are trying to format the disk using a floppy formatter as /dev/fd0
is the "standard" floppy drive. You should format this disk using the
/dev/hdd device and then things should be OK. If not zap me an email.

If it will boot using Linux but not windows, I might suspect a virus. If
not, then why would it not boot from a valid windows boot disk. Do you have
boot A,C, CDRom or something like that enabled?

Can't be. I doubt the 98SE CD shipped with a virus on it, which is
the only way it could have one. Read-only medium, you know.

Does anyone know if these simple routers:
    Linksys BEFSR11 (1 port), BEFSR41 (4 port)
    Netgear RT311 (1 port), RT314 (4 port)
work with Linux.

I have a PPPoE connection (Sympatico HSE with Bell Canada).
I've heard that these routers can do PPPoE in hardware and just
give me something that likes like normal ethernet port(s).

Do I just configure them with a standard web browser? If so, what
IP addresses would I use for the Linux side.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,
I installed Slackware on a Presario 660 to show some kids Linux.

Linux works fine, but the video could be better <g>. I set it
to 800 x 600 @56 mhz. The monitor, circa 1994, was also sold by
Compaq. It says "SVGA" in front and model 472P in the back.

Does anyone know if this monitor can:

1) show more than 256 colors?
2) run at a higher speed?

I could not find any info about it on Compaq's ftp site and I
don't want to screw it up.

Thanks alot for your help,
Mitch

Have you ever booted with the Win 98 SE CD-ROM? If it is an upgrade, it may
not be bootable.

Subject: Travan Tape Drive Trouble on Linux
Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 03:28:08 GMT

I am running Red Hat Kernel 2.2.12-20 and have installed an HP 4-8Gig
Travan IDE Tape Drive for backup purposes. I have a Windows-95 boot on
the machine as well, and I am able to use the drive perfectly using the
Windows App supplied by the manufacturer. Under Linux, I set the
environment variable TAPE=/dev/nht0 and also made a link from
/dev/tape->/dev/nht0 and then tried to use mt to rewind and retension
the tape successfully. I was even able to write single files and small
directories to it using the command tar -cvf /dev/tape * or by copying
the file to /dev/tape. However, when I attempt larger directories, it
writes a few files and then gives me the message: tar: Cannot write
to /dev/tape followed by tar: Error is not recoverable, exiting now.
The files it writes are on the tape and can be copied back to the hard
disk, but it seems to be overrunning a buffer or something and
choaking. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If anyone can suggest
any appropriate experiments to get further information I will happily
try them. Thanks in advance.

Its a full install disk for winders...and the one I installed from

I'm thinking virus too, but its got me puzzled. I don't want to risk
something that will reformat and lose whats left on the disk.

Strangest thing I've ever seen.

Most of these are configured by web browsers. They generally use DHCP to
assign IP addresses automatically. Most Linux distributions include a
DHCP client, so this isn't a problem.

However, if you are only hooking this up to one system, or you have some
kind of masquerade/gateway setup already, there is a very good userspace
PPPoE client for linux available at www.roaringpenguin.com. It is
*extremely* easy to configure.

When I insert the card into the slot I hear a high beep and a low beep,
which should indicate that the card is identified, but the configuration

unfortuately I can't use it for some reason.

I just read the "Cheap Linux Box" How-to type thing at
http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/CheapBox.html
by Andrew Comech
(I have to thank him for giving me an excellent starting place!)

I am considering building my own box to replace an OLD P100.
I am curious to get some other points-of-views about the strong
reccomendation
Andrew gave against Intel processors. The focus of the document was
CHEAP linux boxes, so I can understand it from that perspective.
He also seems to have done his research, I just wanted to see how the
rest of the community felt.
The linux boxes at work seem to do just fine, and most are run on
pentiums.

I am just beginning research into what hardware to use to build my
own box, so I don't mind a RTFM if someone would be kind enough to
tell me where it is.

Most cd-rom drives and burners have little clips on the tray just for that
purpose. You fold them in towards the center to hold the cd in place.
This is only so that it doesn't slip off the tray while loading; when data
is actually being read (or written), the cd is clamped in place and your
drive should work at pretty much any angle.

Subject: Common accounts on Windows 2000 and Linux
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 05:57:36 GMT

I'm looking for a way to have a single Linux server which has account
information for all users of the network. Users should be able to log
on to a Windows 2000 Professional machine, the Linux server, or any
other Linux box using the same login and password.

There's also going to be shared storage between the computers on the
network. I'd like there to be a way for permissions to carry over
between all the different computers. For example, if I login to a
Win2K box as emccoy and create a file on the (SMB) shared disk, I
should be able to login to the file server and see myself as the
file's owner. I don't need all the security features of NTFS, but I
may need all the security features of e2fs.

The file server is also going to be a Linux box, which probably makes
e2fs the only real choice of file system.

How much of this is possible? (Any of it?)

Thanks.

Try:

rm /etc/isapnp.*
pnpdump -c > /etc/isapnp.conf
reboot
Find the values for the sound card by looking in the logs, or in
/proc/ioport, /proc/interrups, /proc/dma

modprobe sb with those values, e.g. modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1

Is your modem internal or external? I have an internal one of these and it
works fine. (These are not winmodems)

Firstly, check that you are looking on the correct serial port.

/dev/ttyS0 = COM1
/dev/ttyS1 = COM2
/dev/ttyS2 = COM3
/dev/ttyS3 = COM4

If it is internal, the plug & play issue might be catching you out. This is
what I do.

In your Pc's BIOS, set the option for plug & play operating system to "no".
This causes the BIOS to set everything and won't bother win95/98 if you
have them.

As the machine boots up, and before the Lilo prompt, you should see a line
appear for each plug and play device. Look at the one where your modem is
detected and note the IRQ. (Mine is IRQ 10 for some reason)

When you have logged in ( as root) type "setserial /dev/ttyS?" (without the
quotes) and substitute the number of the port where your modem is for the ?.

Then if the value given for IRQ is different from the value you noted
previously, you will need to change it. At the Bash prompt, type (as root
again) "setserial /dev/ttyS? irq ?" substituting the correct numbers for
the question marks and again leaving out the quotes.

Try accessing your modem again using minicom. If that doesn't work, nothing
else will either.

Lastly, check to make sure that nothing else is using the interrupt for
your modem by typing "cat /proc/interrupts" at the bash prompt.

For further help, the modem HOWTO and the serial port HOWTO await...

Let me know how you get on.

Subject: HELP!: Abit KT-7 RAID & Mandrake 7.2 problems!!!
Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 08:54:31 GMT

I'm having difficulty with my new Abit KT-7 RAID machine and Linux
Mandrake 7.2.
I had it working fine, but then I decided to throw a bunch of new
hardware on it.

Now, the machine completely freezes up and I must reset it or power
cycle it.
I suspect that the problem may lie with the HPT ATA-100 RAID controller.

OS and config that stayed the same before and after adding in new
hardware:
Linux Mandrake 7.2, stock install.
Antec SOHO file server case, 300W power supply (sweet case BTW)
 Abit KT-7 RAID
Thunderbird 900
768M PC-100 RAM,
Asus V7700 Deluxe Geforce 2 GTS
Pioneer DVD-303 SCSI DVD,
Yamaha 16x10x40 CDRW (secondary master, hdc),
Adaptec 3940UW,
Intel EtherExpress Pro 100

Config before, when it worked fine:
IBM 13G 7200 RPM, primary master (hda) (/boot ext2, / ReiserFS)
Yamaha CDRW (hdc),
Aureal sound card (didn't have it working yet),

After throwing some new hardware in, I'm having problems. The machine
locks up completely and I have to reset. Seems to be when I'm doing
disk access on disks on the HPT ATA controller.

PROBLEM config:
Maxtor 30 gig, 7200RPM on HPT primary master, (hde) hde1 30G ReiserFS
Western Digital 30 gig, on HPT primary slave, (hdf) hdf1 30G ReiserFS
Adaptec 39160 + 2 SCSI disks (RAID0 striped) md0 36G ReiserFS
Creative SB Live audio card (replacing the Aureal. Should I stick
with the Aureal?)
Hauppage BTTV TV tuner / capture card (PCI)

All of this hardware was working fine in other machines.
I've tried a number of experiments to try to isolate the problem and it
does not seem to be the memory or the Adaptec 39160 card.

I suspect that the problem lies with the HPT ATA-100 RAID controller.
I'd like to have this machine useable with all of the hardware that I've
mentioned.

Known problem?
Fixes?
Any suggestions?

Thanks.
