Hi,

I'm in the process of buying a new computer, intel based
2-way SMP. Seems like my best bet would be a system based
on the VIA Apollo pro 133A chipset. Though there has been
some reports on various places about performance problems,
(http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1384) is one of
them.

Does anyone have more information if this is a problems
that is Linux specific and if work is being done to
resolv the issues or if it's the chipset itself that has
poor performance. Would you recommend using a different
chipset instead (there doesn't seem to be a lot of chipsets
for PIII that supports SMP and SDRAM)

Thanks
Daniel Nilsson

Hello,
I sent a message a little while ago about my dual xeon 550 hanging
unpredictably. I have pretty much ruled out the cpu temperature as the
source of the problem. It must be some hardware issue. Could you
please review the hardware I have below and let me know if you know of
any potential flaky hardware:

        Hey Cory!

I'm going through the same deal as you, but with a MX98713
chip network card that uses the tulip driver (RH 7.0). I've been
following this thread and grabbed the updated tulip driver from:
http://www.scyld.com/network/updates.html

I won't have time to compile and add them to my linux box
until saturday, so I don't know if it works yet, but the above URL
link has some instructions for compiling with RH 7.0 and it says the
configuration file with the default install is broken. Read the whole
page at the above URL for the "Special Instructions for RH 7.0"
Hope this helps. Let us know.

        Hello,

i want to watch dvd on my linux PC, i'm going to upgrade my video card
too. So i would like to know what is the best configuration, and if some
people could give me their working configuration at home.

My current configuration :
RedHat 7.0 with 2.4.0 kernel
Celeron 450MHz + 192MB
SCSI Disks/CDRom/CDWriter
ATI All in Wonder Pro AGP 8MB

i'm not against an IDE DVDRom if it works better.

If you own a good working configuration or if you know good web sites
which answered to my questions, let me know.

Thanks in advance, and Happy New Year,

I have a motherboard (GigaByte 71xe) that supports PC100 SDRAM, and I
also have a 256 Megabyte PC133 SDRAM module. Should these work well
together? Is this a situation like processors, in which you can run a
high-speed processor at a lower clock-rate with no problem, or is the
PC133 different from PC100 in ways other than the clock rate that can be
handled?

Hi,
I would like to have an idea of the minimum specifications for
a system to be able to have my local network connect to
the internet via a Cable modem or DSL connection.
What I mean by a minimal system requirements is to
be able to get maximum speeds of the Cable modem or DSL
without being choked down by the hardware to lesser speeds.

1. minimal processor and speed
2. minimum ram
3. hard drive space
4. minimal ethernet card. Will a 10 Mbps suffice

Thanks

Mike

P.S. I happen to be running Redhat 6.1. Are there better versions /
distributions for this purpose?

Yes. The basic router functions of these devices work with *ANY* OS that
uses TCP/IP -- Windows, MacOS, Linux, FreeBSD, BeOS, OS/2, DOS (with
TCP/IP stack installed), VMS, etc. The only OS compatibility questions
relate to two things:

1) Configuration -- some devices use proprietary Windows software to
configure the modem. Most (including those you mention) use Web or
   Telnet configuration tools.
2) Firmware upgrades -- again, some devices use proprietary Windows
software to upgrade the firmware. I know that the NetGear (and I
believe also the Linksys) uses an ordinary FTP transfer to do the
   job.

FWIW, I've got a ZyXEL P314 (ZyXEL makes the NetGear boxes, and rumor
has it they've got a good deal for direct purchases now from their Web
site, http://www.zyxel.com). I use this box on a network with Windows,
MacOS, and Linux, with one box also occasionally dual-booting to BeOS
and OS/2. It works fine with all of these.

> I have a PPPoE connection (Sympatico HSE with Bell Canada).
> I've heard that these routers can do PPPoE in hardware and just

Correct. The PPPoE client sits in the router. Your own network (even if
it's just one computer) uses static IP addresses or DHCP. The drawback
is that this necessarily uses NAT/IP masquerading (in the router), so if
you want to use an exotic protocol, you should be sure that it works
through the router's implementation of NAT/IP masquerading.

The PPPoE implementations of different broadband routers varies in
quality. The NetGear/ZyXEL twins have a better reputation in this
respect than does the Linksys, but apparently Linksys has recently
released a new firmware that people are saying is much improved. Even
the NetGear/ZyXEL devices aren't perfect, though, so you may want to
research the matter with respect to your specific ISP.

> Do I just configure them with a standard web browser? If so, what

The IP address you set varies from one device to another. They
generally use the 192.168.0.0/24 or 192.168.1.0/24 networks by default,
but you can reconfigure that to something else if you like.

For reviews of these and several other hardware broadband routers,

I've got me a suitable .Xmodmap file but when I try to load it xmodmap

I'm not tunning X4.0 and don't really want to.........

It takes very little, if all you want is a router/firewall,
and you don't expect to offer any services from the box.

So you just want a box that can saturate the wire. No problem.

I've heard of people using 386's... A P133 with 16 megs of RAM
and a 2 gig HD is overkill (from personal experience).

10 mb cards are just fine. If they were PCI, that would be luxury.

No problem. :)

Probably. But good enough is good enough. I've seen Redhat 5.2 and
6.2 used quite effectively.

Works for me - I've got 133 memory on a 100 MHz bus.

Hi,
I am using a Ethernet Card with RTL8139(A/B/C) chip. When I recompile
the kernel (either .16 or .18), I cannot find a driver for it. What driver
should I install (3com, PCI, etc.)? Thanks a lot!

env: RTL8139A (no brand), RH7.2, Kernel 2.2.18, glibc2.2
err: cannot bring up the NIC eth0 when starting up

No, the stp driver from the Gimp-print project is the best open-source driver
for Epson inkjets. See: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
