I planned on using an Adaptec 3200S RAID
controller with Red Hat 7 but the card only comes
with RedHat 6.x drivers. Is there an Ultra/160
RAID controller that works with Red Hat 7?

Hi all,

Not really sure where this post should go, so I'm trying both Modems
and Linux. Here is my problem.

I installed Linux for Windows this afternoon (for those of you who do not
know, this is a version of Linux Mandrake 7.2.8 that can be installed
without repartitioning) and so far I love it. However, there is one small
problem. I cannot get my modem to work!

During the installation, I was asked what COM port my modem was on. I
could not remember and I also cannot remember what I selected, but I now
know that the modem is on COM4. I assumed that if I guessed incorrectly I
could easily go back and modify the configuration. Apparently not.

In Linux's Internet Dialer, it looks as if only COM ports 0-3 are enabled.
I cannot get any results out of COM1,2, or 3, but COM 0 will get me
to "Initializing..." but nothing happens. I have also tried "CR, LF, and
CR/LF" -- not sure if I can remember exactly what those do, which is
understandable for a Linux newbie of one day.

I tried to change my modem's COM port from 4 to 3, but when I changed the
modem's resource configuration in Device Manager, it went from COM4 to
COM5 when I set it to what appeared to be COM3. After that, I did find a
tab in my modem's properties labeled "DOS Support," which I enabled. It
lists information used for DOS networking programs, including COM3, Base
Address 03e8, and IRQ 4. So, if I understand this correctly, I should then
be able to use COM3 in Linux to dialup my ISP. But apparently not, as
again I could only get to "Initializing..." while using COM 0.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd appriciate hearing them! Drop me an e-mail if
possible. Thanks!

Well I manually edited Makefiles to get the Linux kernel to include the
necessary netlink functions.

However, after much more pain, I still get this message when attempting
to send a frame, and the count stays at zero for the interface:

p80211knetdev_hard_start_xmit: Tx attempt prior to association, frame dropped.

i've tried using wlanctl-ng to do a dot11req_association which returns a
success, but still does not help. Any thoughts??

Shouldn't a USB mouse use the USB mouse driver? Or does the mouse speak
the IMPS/2 protocol?

Hmm. When you compiled the kernel, did you put in the correct X and Y
resolution of your screen in the Input Core->Mouse section? If
those are off, it could cause funky things to happen including this. If
the input core driver thinks your screen is 1024 pixels wide when it's
only 800 pixels wide, it could report bad values back to X.

Or it could be an X problem. Does the mouse show similar weird behavior
at a text console with GPM?

>I have tried the different drivers working with USB, but to no avail.

?? There's only one driver for most things, except the UHCI host
controller. Did you mean that you've tried different X and Y
resolutions for the input-core mouse module?

I make a /, /boot, and a swap partition. Other people make those 3 along
with a /home and maybe a /opt for where most of your programs may be
stored.

It's up to you but I'm happy with /, /boot, and swap but giving yourself
more eases a reinstallation process as you only need to reinstall some
partitions.

Are you sure this isn't a LoseModem? http://o2.net/~gromitkc/ and look
for your specific modem model in the database. If it's listed as "WM"
then it will not work under Linux, end of story. If it is a Real Modem,
then you should know that COM1 = ttyS0 , COM2 = ttyS1 , etc. You should
also check out http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html and pay close
attention to the bits about "setserial" and internal modems.

Hi Jurph,
there is an install program that should be at the 3com site
that can help you set up your card. It also tests your card. I
would turn off the Plug and Play function, set the board address
and irq to some compatible value and set the transmission to
half-duplex. Those settings will be stored in the card so
it should be easily recognized.

A better SQL server will also keep your SQL queries from blocking up too
badly...

(MySQL is terrible when it comes to larger loads, especially when there
more than a trivial amount of writes..)

But yeah, unless you have a REALLY fat network pipe, CPU is nearly
irrevelant when it comes to serving straight web pages.

Hello,

Despite my luck with the Fujifilm FinePix 1400 with kernel 2.4.0-test11
things are not as good with other kernels. Here are the diagnostics
I got on my Linux box:

==================================================

With kernel 2.4.0-test11 kudzu finds my camera and after bootup I get:

[root@tulip root]# cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: F `$ Model: $ Rev:
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03

==================================================

With kernel 2.4.0 kudzu does not find new hardware and after bootup I get:

[root@tulip root]# cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices: none

When I try to mount /dev/sda1 or any /dev/sda* the error message is:
wrong major or minor numbers.

==================================================

With kernel 2.2.18 I received the following error messages directly to the
Linux console just after logging in as root before I even issued any commands:

usb-storage: bus_reset() requested but not implemented
usb-storage: bus_reset() requested but not implemented

SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 70000
scsidisk I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 0
 unable to read partition table

And when I try to mount the camera I get the error message:
/dev/sda1 is not a valid block device.

Hi,

but it failed to configure the card while excuting "modprobe serial_cs"

OK I rebooted again a few times and then into kernel 2.4.0 with
the FinePix 1400 turned off. Once booting was complete I turned
it on and the mount command worked!

Here is the output I got this time... I got errors later on and
the results seem to differ with each booting of the system.
But things work from time to time so thanks to all developers!

[root@tulip /etc]# cd /proc
