It was getting past 2am, forgot to give H/W details.
Pentium 100
48MB RAM
Adaptec AHA1540C SCSI controller
Seagate ST1515ON 'Barracuda" SCSI HDD
No-name mobo with AMI BIOS
Someone at linuuxnewbie.org gave me a link to an IBM site that said don't
format SCSI HDD's, could damage the drive. *cough*
I am using the controllers utility to format the drive. See how she goes.
Dan, can't even get dos onto the drive at this point.
Wish me luck.
David.

I have the same card -- it seems to be a Promise Ultra100 card. I went to
www.promise.com and downloaded the Ultra100 drivers for Windows and it works
fine. They also have a linux patch. but I think the 2.4.0 kernel should
support it natively.

You can set up software RAID (which is what the HPT370 uses anyway), check out
the how-to's at www.linuxdoc.org.

Subject: Re: L2-Cache of Pentium2 with Linux
Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001 09:30:37 +0100
Thank you for your help.
Yes, my bios is set up to use the L2 Cache.
I wrote a small program that runs through an array (512k) and do some
calculations.
A second version does the same with a loop of 100 times.
Running with Windows NT shows the expected result:
The version with 100 loops is faster than the other one because of the
L2-Cache.
Running with Linux (Kernel 2.2.14, Suse 6.4) I got the same result for both
versions.
To check it I disabled the L2 cache in the bios.
With NT I got the expected result:
Both versions need the same time for each loop. With Linux again no
difference.
That's, why I assume that I need another kernel that supports the L2-cache.
Best regards
Ralf.

I'm not too sure this is a linux driver's problem.
I would rather think this is a Raid adapter issue.
I tried once to put a tape drive on a IBM ServeRaid Controller, behind
disks: it never worked (same symptoms as Rich). I was then told RAID
adapters weren't meant to be connected to tape drives.
Anyone successfull in such a task, tell me. I'm curious to know about it.
Andrew.

Good Morning,
I have a little problem with my US Robotics modem it doesn't
work with SUSE 6.4. All of my attempts didn't gave any results.
Pnpdump is found the modem. I tried to play with setserial command
with all possible devices, ports and IRQ's - modem not response or busy.
In Windows it's work properly and in Red Hat 6.2 too.
Apparently I need a help.
With best wishes, Vld

Try forcing the adapter to a lower transfer rate through the bios. Had a
drive that reported it could handle Mode 4 but could only reliably handle
mode 3.

Cool. I'll give it a try. Currently I have it working under the protocol

I would recommend you use a null modem cable between the serial ports
and then setup ppp across those. There is a wealth of information on
doing this, check the ppp howto and/or dial-up howto as a start.

try disabling all your USB ports and hubs, etc, to free the irq your live

I have the same MB and i managed to install linux(RedHat 6.2) on the IBM ATA

Look what i did:
During the install and at the first screen after the boot open a console,
ctrl-alt-F1, and do
cat /proc/pci and will get :
......

Bus 0, device 17, function 0:

Vendor id=105a. Device id=d30.

Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xdf800000 [0xdf800000].
(the A,B,C,D i put it we are going to use these I/O addresses)
you may have other I/O address but the process is the same.
write in a paper only the values of A,B,C,D without the numbers in []
but in B and D value add 2 as a result we have now B=9402 D=8802.
Now do a reset an install again and at boot prompt give
linux x86_serial_nr=1 ide2=0x9800,0x9402 ide3=9000,0x8802
I am using x86_serial_nr=1 parameter in order my kernel see DURON and not a

When you finish you the install go and add the following line in your
lilo.conf
append="x86_serial_nr=1 ide2=0x9800,0x9402 ide3=9000,0x8802"
With the above you can you use the promise controller.
but there is a patch in 2.2.x kernels about that controller
Download the 2.2.18 kernel and ide.2.2.18.1221.patch from ftp.linux-ide.org
and do
cd /usr/src
patch -p0 < ide.2.2.18.1221.patch
build the kernel with :
Generic PCI bus-master DMA support (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA) = y
Use DMA by default when available (CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO) = y
PROMISE PDC20246/PDC20262 support (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_PDC202XX) = y
When you finish the building an before update the lilo remove the:
ide2=0x9800,0x9402 ide3=9000,0x8802
from your lilo. We don't need it anymore the kernel support the chip
make a backup section in your lilo in order to be more safe.
At the boot you will get:
