Linksys makes a firewall box (I don't have the URL). You can also get a
firewall at www.gnatbox.com . The free version works well for small
networks like a home. They also have hardware boxes and a software solution
that handles larger networks. The software products only require a floppy
drive.

Subject: Initio Scsi + Scanner + 2.4.0
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 05:27:14 GMT

Hi,
I have a SIIG scsi-2 card (initio chipset) which worked perfectly in the
2.2.16 kernel. Attached to it, there is an internal Yamaha 4416S
CD-Burner, an external minolta SCSI->PcCard reader, and a Umax Astra
600S scanner. When I upgraded to 2.4.0, the system hung as soon as the
initio module was loaded. I disconnected all of the devices, and the
module loaded without a problem. I then connected each separately, and
found that the scanner always hung, while the other two had no problems.
As I said before, they worked well in 2.2.16 and I didn't have any
problems at that time. However, the upgrade to 2.4.0 does not allow me
to use the scanner. I did load scsi-mod first, and then any other module
(ncluding initio, sg, sd, etc...) would fail. When the module loaded, I
could not exit insmod, but the system worked fine outsite of that (it
did not crash completely). Can anybody tell me how to fix this? I did
have the same type of problem before 2.2.12 was released, but that was
with the CD-Burner.
Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you're talking about a Efficient Networks 4060? If so,
there are no such drivers... I would definitely swap it out with an
ethernet modem (5260).

Subject: Can't get RH7 to configure NIC
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 09:46:49 GMT

Hi all,

I am new to linux. I have just installed Red Hat 7 on my HP 8610 (Athlon
600 Mhz). The installation seemed to go well.

After I installed RH7 I installed a PCI D-Link DFE-530TX+ 10/100 NIC. I
checked the RH website to confirm that the card is supported. I expected
Kudzu to detect the card when I next rebooted, but it did nothing. I tried
to configure the card using linuxconf, the driver was not automatically
selected, so I chose rtl8139.o (from RH website). When I rebooted the eth0
said that initialization delayed.

I checked the IRQ and IO from windows and put these values into linuxconf.
When I tried to ping another IP address the message said that the network is
unreachable.

I though this may be a problem with my BIOS, but I can't see how to disable
any PnP settings in the BIOS. I changed the slot that I installed the card
in but Kudzu still did not detect it.

I looked at the websites I could find that I thought might help. I tried
the suggestions in the RH Ethernet-HOWTO but still could not sort out my
problem.

Any help that anyone may be able to give me would be greately appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Carl

I've looked in vain for that. Nothing has been done to the BIOS on the m/b
or any of the SCSI controllers since the kernel change. During POSTs the
controllers come up in the order I want, it's when Linux starts they get
swapped around. That's what puzzles me so, and keep the box from being
useful.

Thanks for your response.

Had *exactly* the same prob. with my HP Dat24i. No-no on DDS3 but OK on
DDS2/1. Got a new unit from HP when I demoed the prob. to their (local)
engineers.

Chris

P.S. Someone else on this NG reported the same prob. around
Christmas-time. Seems the HP DAT24i may be flakey!

Confess I missed the first part of this thread, but why do you expect
Linux to be able to "debug" what seems to be a hardware problem? Perhaps
you should try Windoze.
