Subject: SB16 problems
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 12:39:04 +0500
Hi,
This is one of those strange problems that I cannot figure out. I have a
SB16 ISA, non-PnP that was working on one computer (P233, running RH6.1
with the upgraded kernel 2.2.16-3), and I decided to move it to a similar
computer (P133, same linux installation) and I cannot get it to work at
all. Oddly, kudzu didn't seem to detect it, and on start up I do get some
error regarding "can't find module midi", but since it's a stock RH
install with no custom compiled kernel (like on my other computer), I'm
not sure what is wrong. I do get error messages about "No such device" for
/dev/audio and /dev/dsp, so I can't figure out what exactly I've
configured wrong, or if I'm missing some package or file (since the list
of modules and libraries in both computers is the same, I don't think
that should be the problem). sndconfig doesn't help because it ends with
the "Can't open /dev/audio" and isapnp doesn't help either.
I used a DOS disk to check out if it was a hardware problem, but the card
was working fine under dos, and PnP on the MB is disabled.
If it helps any, here's the relevent entry in my conf.modules
alias sound sb
pre-install sound /sbin/insmod sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
Thanks for any help. BTW I have looked at the HOWTOs, which don't really
help in this situation.

The message "hda: lost interrupt" could mean that you are out of IRQ's
to allocate the new device. I have this same machine. When I tried to
add in a sound card, I had problems because all the IRQ's were used up.
Use the F2 key to enter the bios setup and turn off anything not being
used. I turned off the serial ports and the USB port. The option to turn
off these devices is in the embedded device menu.
Good Luck,

Just purchased a geforce2 ultra and I'm trying to get the quake 3
performance closer to the windows framerate. I know they can't match
perfectly, but the gap between them is larger than it is supposed to be.
Can anyone recommend any tweaks or some good sites I can visit to
close this gap?
Thanks.

I instaled a lot of times an UDMA 66 disk connected to a ide Promise
controller and just need to use the ide=... statement at boot during
instalation and when configuring LILO ( also at instaltion ) using RH 6.2.

...because, dumb acting one, I chose to display why I have not gotten back

might have understood (sharp as a bowling ball).
Doesn't it make sense that I might be logging on with a Windows box (tools,
etc...), if I can't get Linux setup? There are probably a lot of readers in
the same temporary situation, too (e.g. read all the installation woes).
Ergo, there's probably a good chance someone's reading the board with MS
Outlook Express which is one of the most popular mail components for MS
Windows users.
In addition, who are you to limit the technical capacity of everyone in
comp.os.linux.hardware? Those of us who have been in the field for a chunk
of time probably know a little bit about quite a lot. In fact, pertaining to
the level of responses on this board, I would guess that most people have
quite a heavy skill set. How small of you to project otherwise!
It's too bad that you didn't like the tag that I chose to give my inquiry
(i.e. "MS Outlook Express"), but it's not your request. If you would read
my initial posting, my objective (e.g. notify responders) was clearly stated
and pertaining. The contingency (i.e. MS Windows tool; Outlook Express) was
not by (Subject:) title.
Your contributions are worthless.

If you are going to use multiple partitions on the system, then a 10 GB
/(root) or a 6 GB /tmp partition is a waste of disk space.
But this is my opinion and others will probably disagree.

Glitch,
Thanks for your reply.
I have managed to get Linux up on one of my BE6-II's. I chose to plug the
drive directly into IDE1 to quickly get by this snafu (ie. version
discursion; v2.4 is supposed to work with the HPT366). My objective is to
set myself up to install a 2.4 kernel. More specifically, I'm gonna rebuild
the kernel on my working Linux box.
If I have problems with 2.4, I will certainly consider the suse 6.3i option
that you are offering. Thanks, again...DjM

The Yast problem you refer to is really just a glorified interface to
'wvdialconf' the last time I looked at SuSE... and it creates an
unnecessarily complicated /etc/wvdial.conf
Assuming you have the module/driver loaded for the modem... try running
'wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf' from the command line. You should see
wvdialconf scanning your serial ports for modems, etc... and it should find
it at /dev/ttyS15. Edit /etc/wvdial.conf and adjust phone, username,
password details (probably a good idea to limit dialup to a specific group
and make /etc/wvdial.conf 660 or even 640 (root.modemgroup) ownership.
I don't use 'kppp' and/or KDE... but you might want to do something like
'ln -s /dev/ttyS15 /dev/modem' (I assume it might look for /dev/modem?)
btw... http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc has a nice winmodems page.
I've always had success with compiling the pctel.o driver from source with
'MODEM.zip'... but your mileage may vary - I forget the names of the other
versions... packaged as binaries, etc...
I've used the modem successfully on SuSE 6.3, 6.4... and Slackware 7.1... if
you're curious.
