What is your exact problem ? The ATI Rage Fury is supported by RH 6.2 and
XFree86 3.3.6.

Subject: Linux on Toshiba Satelite 35DVD
Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 19:32:14 GMT

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the best group to post to, but my ISP doesn't
have the comp.os.linux.laptop group I was looking for.

I am interested in buying a Tosh 35DVD laptop and duel-booting to Linux
with it (I need Windoze to play Half-Life and Quake on). It comes with
the following kit:

Graphics:
        ATI Mobility-M

Sound:
        Crystal 2481

Ethernet:
        Accton EN2242

Modem:
        Unknown at present (anyone?)

IIRC, the ATI graphics card is in XFree86 3.3.6 and XFree86 4,the sound
card is in kernel 2.2.17+ and the ethernet card is in the Scyld drivers
(and the kernel?).

Things are looking good for this laptop to be my portable linux box.

So, what experience has anyone had with the above components,
good/bad/indifferent comments are all welcome. Anyone saying "don't get
one" best provide a good reason or I'll ignore them! Finally anyone know
what the modem is in this laptop?

Thanks for any help,
Ross Burton

I'm not sure that your video card has any kind of 3-D acceleration
under XFree86 3.3.6. Of ATI's products, only the ATI Rage Pro is accelerated
(through the Utah-GLX project's work). However, according to this page:

http://dri.sourceforge.net/DRIuserguide.html

there is DRI support in XFree86 4.0.x for most ATI cards. I suspect that
your best bet would be to upgrade to XFree86 4.0.1 at least.

You want horror stories? Mine's too long to go into, but I made
the sad mistake of trying to build a RH 7 server using an ABIT
KT7-RAID . . . and now am reduced to trying to get Win98 to
run on it, so I can use my desk machine, a very stable Epox-KII-500
based unit instead. At present, I'm very pleased to have reduced system
crashes on the Abit to only once ever 2 - 3 hours and this is after
30+ hrs of OS installs and reinstalls, poring over newsgroup postings
and FAQ's and so on.

Never could get either RH7 or Linux to install, and had to go to
beta Via and Abit BIOS to get Win98 to be reasonably stable. May
have a bad SIMM as well, and the Matrox G200 video is a
nightmare all on its own.

My recommendation? Find a system that someone else has that
is working 100% . . . and then buy EXACTLY the same mobo,
video and MEMORY they have.

Also, check out the relevant newsgroup for the mobo you settle
on: the Abit board has gleaned glowing reviews all over the web,
but if you check the newsgroup, you'll find it full of folks who haven't
even been able get an OS installed . . . and of folks who've achieved
'success' after 20, 30, 50 hours of 'tweaking'. Wasn't the way I'd
planned to go.

Good luck!

Ben

This looks like what I need! Thanks!

Old as in I don't have a clue where it came from. It was in our computer

I use the "3c590/3c900 series (592/595/597) "Vortex/Boomerang" support"
driver in the standard 2.2.17 kernel.

However, Ray's original problem was that his card would not work with
the standard RedHat7.0 kernel.

Hello...

My USB controller is enabled in the BIOS but Linux does not see an
interrupt line for it.

Loading usb-ohci fails because of not seeing an interrupt. Kernel is
2.2.16 (SuSE 7.0), MSI-5169 motherboard with ALi15X3 chipset,
AMD-K6-II-350, 128MB.

I installed Windows for testing and USB works, so it should not be a
direct hardware/BIOS related problem.

Any help?

any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

It is nice to have sane time in the boot process or you may end

Even if you have a connection and a time reference which allows you
to run (x)ntpd then it will not synchronize, by a design, time which
is too far off. If your hardware clock is really wild (a clock
battery going away may have such effects) then as a workaround you
may try to run 'rdate -s ...' early in your startup scripts but
some kind of a network connection have to be going when you are
attempting that. PPP will do in a pinch but latencies may be
significant.

I tried the app and it does indeed do what I want...

EXCEPT... sadly, in some cases creates a bad wave file (eg, I recorded a 100MB

I'm looking for an inexpensive rack mount case for a TBU and a CD. Nothing
fancy, just a really simple rack mount box with a 60W PS, and provisions
for SCSI connector. All I need is a cheap 2 bay rack mount box.

I've been looking around and all I can find is VERY expensive, far beyond
what I need hardware, with prices around $450+.

(I have a CRU enclosure with dataports for my hard drives, so I'm not
afraid to pay when I need to - but a CD is hardly a critical component
that needs dual PS and 160LVD cabling....)

Does anyone have a source for basic rackmount cases?

Thanks,
