I am considering utilizing the DFI-AK74-EC mother board for my new box,

however I am not sure if the IDE controller will pose any problem, being

it is a Ultra DMA/100 controller. The board has two DMA/100 connectors
and states support for 33/66 Mhz drives. Has any one used this board for

Linux? If so were there any problems?

I need some help doing some basic troubleshooting on my parallel port.
(relative newbie)

Basic promlem is that I cannot print to my HP 4L. When lpd is running, lpc
says "no printer daemon present." Tried turning off the lpd and running
PDQ, but still nothing.

Running SuSE 6.4 with 2.4.0 kernel and using upgraded modutils. I believe
parport stuff is enabled in the kernel configuration.

Can anyone provide me with a step-by-step troubleshooting checklist ?

Thanks in advance.

Subject: A longish question on networking Linux & Windows 98
Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 03:49:26 GMT

I'm somewhat of a Linux newbie, and I find myself faced with a total
limiting factor each time I try to use it. Basically, I can get to the
point where it's up and running, with X working great, running Gnome and
Enlightenment, but I can _never_ get my internet connection up and running.

It's somewhat of a weird setup in my house. First off, I'm on a laptop; an
Acer Travelmate 521TE to be exact. Nextly, my home network consists of
three machines, running on a 10 base T coaxial network. Because it's
coaxial cable, my laptop's built in Ethernet card is somewhat useless, so
I'm using a PCMCIA card, with an adapter that translates the coaxial cable
into a sort of flat plug that connects to the card. The PCMCIA card itself
is a "Compaq Ethernet LAN Card".

My dad (who refuses to take the time to re-network the house with proper
Ethernet cable), has the cable modem on his PC and is running Windows 98.
We're using a piece of software called SyGate to share the modem. So, not
only do I need to configure a PCMCIA card before I can configure a network
connection, neither of which I have any idea how to do, I have to figure out
how to connect to a Win98 server running 3rd party software to share an
internet connection.

As for my distro, I really haven't developed to strong a preferences for
myself. I have a fast internet connection (though Windows) and a CD burner,
so if anybody can recommend a good distro for this sort of thing I can get
it no problem.

This is sort of a daunting task due to my lack of experience with Linux, but
I'm willing to work at it. If anybody can sort of point me in the right
direction, or towards some related documentation, it would be greatly
appreciated.

As a sort of related question to my problem, but not to the group, would
this sort of thing be easier with a Windows 2000 server? I know a friend
who did it in all of 10 minutes networking to a Windows NT server with his
PC, so I'm wondering if there isn't a better way of sharing the modem
itself, preferably under Windows 98, but perhaps I can convince my dad to
upgrade to 2000.

Most definitely AT...mine's in a full-tower AT case. They usually have both
AT and ATX power connectors on them, so they can go in ATX cases as well
(assuming that the given ATX case has the appropriate mounting holes and I/O
shield to accomodate an AT motherboard).

Subject: Any USB ethernet adapters for Linux?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm trying to get two USB ethernet adapters to work with Red Hat Linux 7.0 for Intel,
kernel version 2.2.16-22. The adapters
are (from dmesg):

        Manufacturer: NETGEAR
Product: NETGEAR EA101 USB Ethernet Adapter
        SerialNumber: 00A0CC5E0ABB

and

        Manufacturer: D-Link ink C
        Product: DSB-650TX USB Ethernet
        SerialNumber: 78de0f

The hub and the ports are correctly identified, but I get a message when booting
saying:

        usb.c: unhandled interfaces on device
usb.c: This device is not recognized by any installed USB driver.

This applies to both adapters. The NetGear adapter is supposed to work with the
Kawasaki driver, while the D-Link adapter
should work with the Pegasus driver. Both drivers are compiled into the kernel
(static). Both disconnecting and connecting the
adapters results in the kernel (the USB hub) detecting the disconnect/connect. Both
drivers have been enabled under the USB
section (make menuconfig).

I was wondering if there are any known issues or problems with these adapters and
Linux, or USB ethernet adapters in general?
I would appreciate any suggestions and pointers on how to make these adapters work, or
recommendations on other adapters that
are known to work.

Thanks,

That'll eliminate the multi-user overhead and give you a 'better' score?

No, there are no module parameters passed, although I'm staring to think
maybe there should. aic7xxx har a parameter that will reverse the PCI scan
order (see/usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/README.aic7xxx).

Well, I'm uncertain as to whether parameters given to the aic7xxx module
will have any effect when the megaraid driver gets loaded first.

It could be that the order of defines in
/usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/hosts.c has an impact. I don't know.

I can think of two possible causes of this problem, both of which I have experienced:

1. If Windows is using a driver supplied by the manufacturer of the drive, this drive
may require
initialisation by it's own driver. If you have a DOS driver for this drive, you can
determine
whether this is the case in the following manner:

   a. Make a DOS boot diskette which contains:
        i. system files (by using the command sys c: a: at the DOS prompt in Windows)
ii. CD-ROM DOS driver supplied by the drive manufacturer
iii. CONFIG.SYS file containing a line for loading the driver
(e.g. DEVICE=A:\CDROM.EXE (replace CDROM.EXE with the name of the driver
file.))
   b. Boot the system using the boot diskette.
   c. When the DOS prompt appears, remove the diskette and warm boot Linux by pressing
CTRL+ALT+DEL.
NOTE: doing a cold boot by pressing the reset button or by powering down the
machine will
defeat the initialisation of the drive by its driver.

When the system boots from the diskette, the drive will be initialised by its
driver. When you
warm boot, the drive will remain unaffected (unlike a cold boot) and thus still
initialised while
   Linux boots.

2. If the above procedure did not allow the system to mount and read from the CD, the
drive may be
defective. I have a drive that often fails to respond regardless of whether I'm
using Windows,
DOS, or Linux. I've never had any problems with a different drive which I've
borrowed from another
   computer.

Subject: Via686a onboard sound help

New mainboard (Amptron/PCChimps/70 other names M807) comes with onboard sound.
All I can get out of the manual's discussion of the sound is a lot of blather
about AC97, so I have to assume that I'm working with the sound faculties in
the chipset (VIA KT133/686A). While both the kernel and ALSA can detect the
circuitry and load modules, sound itself is another thing. With the (2.4.0
final) kernel driver, only a tiny peep is audible at the highest mixer
settings, and the sound rate seems off. With the ALSA driver, it seems to only
support the MIDI end of things, and the same nil-volume issue.

What am I missing, if all I want is to hear an occasional .wav and the piped-in
output of a TV card connected to line-in? Anyone gotten this beast going? I'd
prefer not to have to go back to the previous setup (YMF724F and ALSA)

Here's what I recommend you do in this situation.

First, you should clean the drive. Go to a computer or office supply store and
try to find
a cleaning cartridge for this drive and use it. If you cannot find one, you can
get a VCR
head cleaning kit that has swabs and head cleaner (not the cleaning cassette).
Don't use
cotton swabs, as they are prone to leaving fibers behind (chamois are best). You
will need
to clean the tape head, and also the optical sensor that detects the ends of the
tape if you
can find it. It would also be a good idea to get a can of dusting spray (the
cans of air you
can find in office supply stores - not Pledge! :)) and blow out the inside of
the drive.

Once the drive has been thoroughly cleaned, check the cable. Look for loose
connections,
damaged cable, improper or no termination, etc. If everything appears to be in
order,
put a new tape in the drive. Mount the drive and try mt retension. The drive
should run to
the end of the tape and then rewind. If it does, you may be set to go. If it
doesn't, the
drive may be defective after all.

I don't know about the instant mt error; it may be due to buffering since Linux
buffers
