I don´t know, whether it is of any help for you, perhaps they are too
different. I use a Diamond Fire GL pro and use the 3DLabs driver.

Subject: ATAPI ZIP-100 PECULARITIES?
From: andy Warkentin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 13:31:06 GMT
Some Pecularities of the ATAPI Zip Drive...
1)Unlike the PPA or the SCSI model, when you do fdsik on a disk inside the atapi drv,
and type in 'p', id prints out the part. table + it says that logical bad physical
start/end
do __not__ correspond... This behavior is indifferent which partitions you have...
Now, if you put the same disk into a PPA drive, and do the fdisk... everything is
fine...
Iomega sure messed this one up...
2) I was building a small Slackware root-fs in case of emergency... so since ATAPI ZIPs
are less than bootable I decided to make a LILO floppy, with map files on the ZIP and
the
bootloader on floppy: LILO failed telling me that the dirve had an incorrect No. of
cylinders...
Now I tried reconfiguring the way LILO sees it thru the lilo.conf file, i changed
heads/cylinders. DIDN'T HELP!!!!
3) I just found out of a A: drive fuctionality on an ATAPI ZIP, I am not sure if its
on or
off in my computer, because it isn't anyware in ZIP docs/how-to... DOS THIS MEAN I
CAN BOOT IT?
Thanx for your time... and any replies to past happenings/ questions...

Which driver did you get to work for a test page on the Z42? You are the
first person to mention the Z42 printing anything in Linux. Have you
gotten it to work for more than the test page? If, not maybe I can help
if I can try the driver myself. I normally use printtool in Redhat or
Mandrake to set up my printer but maybe I can help. JH

Hi Everyone,
Has anyone had a good experience installing a Dual boot system on a
recent laptop? Are there any laptop models to be avoided at all cost? As
far as I understand it, there are two issues, when setting up such a
system. A, how will the recovery CD deal with the partitioning, and B,
will I be able to find a video driver for my video card?
Finally, I would like to know if any of you would suggest installing NT
over Windows 2000, or windows 98, on the windows partition?
Thanks for any help,

Hi, I have a 3DLabs 32MB Oxygen VX1 video card
the problem is I can not get the window system to come
up at all. This is strange because durring the installation
the resolution and picture quality of the monitor was perfect.
Tell me if I'm wrong, but if the picture is that good on installation
does'nt that mean that the video card was using a suitable Driver.
How come I recieved no warnings or errors at all and when I reboot
there is no way I can get into KDE or any other windows.
Please Help!!!!

You program attempted to access memory to which
it was not entitled. To find out why, recompile with
debugging switched on (add the -g arg for g77) and the
run the program under gdb
acms22:> gdb <my program>
<message>
(gdb) set args <my args>
(gdb) run
<lots of output>
<segfault message>
(gdb) bt
this will give yo a backtrace of the function stack -- the problem
is occuring in the uppermost one
> Could it be a hardware problem ?
More likey to be bad fortran (many fortran programmers dont even
know that there *is* a standard, never mind using it).
Bon chance!

Hello everyone,
I like the Windows GUI. After five years using it I know my way around
it very well. I love it - but I'm sick sick sick of blue
screen/lockups. I've got Windows ME and, I don't know if it's because
I haven't re-installed it in many months but man it locks up several
times a day. Due to the IE browser mostly, and some games.
So... I'm thinking (again) of switching to Linux - or maybe Apple's
OS. Last year I downloaded a half dozen of the well known
distributions. I liked Corel the most but it won't run with my current
graphics card. Soon I'll be replacing this system though so maybe now
is the time I'll switch.
Now a few questions:
1 ) Is there a more newbie friendly distribution than Corel's yet? It
is nice but still has a long way to go to being as easy to use as
Windows. (Sorry but it's the truth).
2a ) If I run VMWare will I be able to run every Windows program?
2b ) Will I take a speed hit? I intend to get a Celeron 700 system
with at least 128 MBs PC100 RAM.
2c ) Will VMWare allow me to just kill Windows and restart it whenever
it hangs? If I can without a reboot that'll be great - assuming Linux
really doesn't hang very often. Then I can ease my way into learning
Linux instead of having to jump right in and also find programs,
similar to the Windows ones I use, right away.
3 ) Will any motherboard that accepts the Celeron 700 work with Linux
or are there some that are better than others? Some I should avoid?
Lastly
4 ) I'll be getting a new 2D/3D card to replace my old Voodoo II. I'm
thinking maybe a GEFORCE2 MX AGP 32MB but I'm open to ATI and, of
course, 3DFX still. I might want one with TV Out/Vid Capture too. Any
recommendations - for or against?
Thanks in advance to anyone that replies.

Brian,
I did almost exactly the same thing. Let me try to remember what I did (this
assumes your system is one large partition):
1. Add the new drive as a secondary drive (preferably on second IDE channel for
speed, but it doesn't matter).
2. Make sure you've created a swap partition on the new drive as well as a
partition for your Linux system.
3. Make a mount directory for the drive from somewhere in your current
directory, or use an existing one, and mount the new drive.
4. One major point: if you use LILO you may need to download the latest version
that deal with large hard drives. You _may_ not need this if the drive is only
Linux. Mine had Linux and Windows, with Linux installed in a partition beyond
cylinder 1024, which needed the new LILO. If you need the new LILO, install it
and get it running BEFORE step #4.
5. Assuming you mounted at /mnt/new, enter the following command:
cp -ax /* /mnt/new
This will copy everything over and will avoid trying to copy /proc (which would
not be good). This is where 'cp -R -p' gets you into trouble. Read the man page
on 'cp'.
6. I think you have to manually create a /mnt/new/proc directory, and manually
set the permissions on /mnt/new/tmp (not sure about that, just look to see if
they are there the way they need to be and adjust if not).
7. If you shut down and remount the new drive as master on the primary IDE
channel, I think it should boot up as before, but now with 20GB drive.

See http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ for a listing of
laptops on which Linux has been installed, and with what level of success.
I have a dual booting system running on my Compaq Presario 1700 T. The
system is great, but there were a couple problems:
1) Graphical install did not work, needed to use text install under RH 6.2.
2) Sound care requires downloaded Open Sound driver for $35 (I don't need
sound, so I skipped this).
3) Integrated modem/NIC are worthless from the standpoint of Linux. I
bought a $25 10/100 PCMCIA off ebay that works great.
I loaded to boot loader on the Linux partition, then made that partition
active using dos's fdisk.

NOTE: When I say graphical install didn't work, I do NOT mean I was unable
to install X. Just the initial install wouldn't work in graphical mode.
The install process subsequently detected all video settings, and X runs
great on this 1700 T.

All the Linux distros seem to be getting friendlier all the time. I use RedHat
6.2 (they're up to 7.0 now), and from my own experience it recognizes hardware
better than Windows does, and installs with fewer mouse clicks (the metric used
by the idiot PC magazine reviews for what determines good software) and only a
single reboot. Easier than Windows in that regard. Things that may still be more
difficult are dial-up networking and windows-only devices. Dial-up has a
"wizard" now, but may not recognize as many modem configs as Windows does (eg,
plug-and-play ISA modems, etc). For Windows-only devices you must investigate
first to determine if there is a Linux driver for them. Try www.linhardware.com.
Finally, after using Windows exclusively for 5 years, you will likely find that
anything different will be difficult at first until you get used to it. If you
are patient, tenacious, and can read documentation, you should have no real
trouble running Linux.

I have no direct experience with VMWare, but from what I've read it sounds like
it works great for running Windows programs. Will it run _every_ program?
Sheesh, even Windows can't claim that! :-)

IMHO, you will not take a speed hit. Speed difference should be negligible. This
will vary depending upon what desktop you use (KDE, Gnome, WindowMaker, etc)

I don't know the answer to this. You may want to contact VMWare folks and get a
good low-down on their stuff.

I would check www.linhardware.com. Linux should work fine with most any MB you
use, but investigate further regarding your specific MB.

Again, check the hardware compatibility list under www.linhardware.com, and at
www.linux.org.

Sorry, thats not it. I don't use Plug and Pray, even with Windoze.
Thanks for the idea though.
