I would recommend that everyone stay as far away from Tyan motherboards as
possible. Ive gone through two lemons lately (bad DIMM slots) and a bad
CPU socket.
And when they do work, theyre still quite awful.
Stick to Asus and Abit, if you absolutely must run AMD/INTEL equipment.

Subject: USR 3CP5610A - Modem won't work
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 11:12:02 -0500
I have the USER 3CP5610A modem on Mnadrake 7.2 and can't make it work. It
shows up in hard drake, but when I try to configure it, hard drake stares
that it can't configure a win. This isn't a win and I have tried the
following based on my /proc/pci:
<snip>
Bus 0, device 9, function 0:
Serial controller: Unknown vendor Unknown device (rev 1).
Vendor id=12b9 Device id=1008
Medium devsel. IRQ 9 I/O at 0xdc00 [0xdc01]
</snip>
setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 9 port 0xdc00 autoconfig
setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 9 port 0xdc00 ^fourport ^auto_irq skip_test
autoconfig spd_vhi
proc/interrupts yields:
CPU0
0: 32694 XT-PIC timer
1: 75 XT-PIC keyboard
2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
4: 3 XT-PIC serial
5: 3365 XT-PIC EMU10K1
8: 2 XT-PIC rtc
9: 0 XT-PIC usb-uhci, usb-uhci
11: 263 XT-PIC eth0
12: 2313 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse
13: 1 XT-PIC fpu

NMI: 0
Procinfo yeilds:

irq 5: 3365 EMU10K1 irq 14: 16617 ide0
irq 6: 2 irq 15: 10 ide1
Neither setserial commands work. Also, the IRQ appears to be unused by any
other device. proc/interrupts seems to say there is a problem w/
conflicting USB, but I disabled the USB support in the bios and it didn't
help? But doesn't IRQ 9 get re-wired to the 8-bit slot connector in place
of IRQ 2 so 8-bit cards can treat IRQ9 as IRQ 2? Can anyone point me in the
right direction? Thxs.

Please forgive my English; I'm USAian.
Distro: Mandrake 7.2
kernel: 2.2.17-21mdk
Motherboard: PC Chips M805LR, 256MB RAM, 1GHz K7
Tape Drive: HP COLORADO 8GB, ATAPI TAPE drive
Like so many others, I'm having trouble getting my HP IDE tape drive
working. I've tried as a regular IDE device with no luck. Most of the
advice I've seen here suggests to use SCSI emulation. So I reconfigured
the kernel, answering "N" to "Include IDE/ATAPI tape support?" and "Y"
to "SCSI Emulation", "SCSI Support", "SCSI tape support" and "SCSI
generic support", relinked it and now:
# mt -f /dev/st0 rewind
/dev/st0: Input/output error
# mt -v
mt-st v. 0.5b
# tar tvf /dev/st0 /*
tar: /dev/st0: Cannot read: Input/output error
tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
# dmesg
<see attachment>
Can anyone help? Thanks.

Wrong, Tina! It doesn't hurt us because we are secure in the knowledge

Is this because you are somehow insecure about your use of MS Windows?
If that OS serves your purposes better than GNU/Linux, then you have no
reason to be hurt.

Tina, just ignore the rants of those immature, unfortunate people. They
are not here to help, only to provoke and satisfy their egos. They
safely can be ignored.

This would not be good, Tina, because you would just be lowering
yourself to their level. Just ignore them. The only ones you should
pay attention to are those willing to help you without being
judgemental.

hmm, i just got an AOpen GeGorce2/MX for $130 and am very
happy with it. 32M memory. No tv out though. If you don't
need that, you can save another $100 here. I didn't look

Have it running here for about a month. Attached it to an
Adaptec 29160 (Ultra160, 64 bit PCI) with a bunch of
other drives (3x HDD, HP DAT40i, DVD-ROM, ZIP100).
Works perfectly, haven't srewed a single CD-R or

No problems! I'm using a Gigabyte GA-7ZM with a 700MHz Duron without
problems. You don't need seperate drivers. The more recent kernels have
drivers for the Via chipset built in, and that's all you need.

Monitors don't need "drivers". XFree86 supports almost any monitor,
provided you know the Hsync and Vsync ranges the monitor supports. If
this is a newer monitor, you can probably just use one of the defaults
that XF86Setup/Xconfigurator/SaX provides ("Monitor that can do 1024x768
at 75Hz"), but if it's older, you may have to look in the monitor's
manual, find the Hsync and Vsync ranges, and enter these into the
"advanced" dialog box in XF86Setup/whatever.
If you don't have the manual for the monitor, or the manufacturer's
website doesn't have the information you need, I think you can find
these data for lots of monitors at http://monitors.org/ . HTH,

If you go to http://deja.com/home_ps.shtml and search this NG for
"Duron", you'll find plenty of success stories with various
motherboards. The VIA KT133 chipset is certainly supported, as are all
the older iterations of most VIA chipsets. The "4 in 1" thing you
mention is probably WinXX-specific, unless it relates to the onboard
sound chip found on some VIA-chipset boards. This onboard sound is
supported under Linux as well, but it can be a bit of a pain to set up.
Again, search this NG for "VIA sound" to see what people have managed to
come up with. HTH,
